New York.– Shakira, a longtime activist for Latin American’s poor children, plans to make her Colombian children’s foundation a global one in the near future. Shakira said Barefoot, known as Pies Descalzos in her native Colombia, will start focusing on children worldwide later this year.

“We have a model that works. Under less than $2 a day, we can provide a kid with top quality education and the nutrition that they need to be able to function and be able to learn because a kid with an empty stomach cannot learn,” said the singer, a multiplatinum superstar known for hits like “Hips Don’t Lie.”

“So this model that has been so successful in my country, now I want to bring it to other countries in my small way.” Shakira made the comments Wednesday after appearing at Columbia University with Spanish singing sensation Alejandro Sanz and the presidents of Mexico, Argentina, Paraguay, El Salvador and Panama.

The event focused on the importance of education, nutrition and health intervention for Latin American children. The singers asked the presidents to adopt an agreement on combatting child poverty during the upcoming Iberoamerican Summit in late October.

“The presidents seem very committed and that’s what we need. We need all the leaders of Latin America to have a definite commitment toward our children (because) the children of Latin America are waiting for opportunities,” said Shakira in an interview after conference

Regardless of politics and taste this is an example of what happens when private individuals does something outside of NGO or UN process. A true capitalist way of doing things. Effective and on the cheap.

Shakira and other celebrities constantly speak out about social ills as if they were elected officials; Some others like Bono of U2 go around the world pointing out all types of problems, and it's a good thing. However, their main reason for championing certain "causes" may be for publicity.
As if saying: "Look at me I care for all the hungry children in the world, I have a heart; though I make my living acting, singing, and dancing, I want to make a difference in the world ".
Well, in a world where the famous people speak and everyone listens; It's the least they can do. Kick up some of the ridiculous money they make to the less fortunate. If a person living on a fixed (menial) income can provide subsistence for hungry children in the third world. Shouldn't these high priced "entertainers" donate a few millions from their easy money? It's a song and a dance, and bingo------a million bucks in their pockets. Everyone else works for a living.

Jonbonz and Arsenio are both correct. There are a tremendous amout of popular recording artists, actors and the like who fly around pointing how how the children are starving or are poorly educated as they give the interview from thier $2500 a night presential suite at the Ritz, but fail to give $10.00 for a cause they say they back.
