NEW YORK. - External forces beyond Dominican Republic’s reach put any of the Millennium’s Sustainable Development Objectives (COPDES) at risk and the advances obtained in them, said the director of the Presidential Commission which oversees them, John Gagain Jr.

He warned that those “external forces make reference to the climatic change that has seriously affected the island of Hispaniola in the last few years, such as the last four hurricanes that have punished us in these two months.”

He said environmental sustainability is the axis for all the other objectives since any progress in Millenium Objective #7, on environmental protection, will mean progress in the other objectives and established goals.

Gagain said to meet the first of the objectives the country needs to concentrate on food production to allow their access to Dominicans in extreme poverty. He said the agricultural potential of Dominican soil places it in a privileged position to become the Caribbean’s bread basket.

The Declaration of the Millenium lists eight objectives to eradice poverty, including  universal elementary education, gender equality, infantile mortality, maternal mortality, the advance of HIV/AIDS and the sustainability of the environment.

The Dominican official spoke on “Environmental Sustainability” during the high level Round Table in the opening of the 63rd United Nations General Assembly.

Will they ask for everyone around the world to give up a meal a day for the have nots of the world?
They should pratice what they preach. Get off their high horses, and their summer homes in CastelGandolfo, work with their hands and give up some of those pope-mobiles.....some of those frescoes on the walls of their lavish domains.....melt some of the gold on their altars.....release the trillions in funds they collect on tithes and offerings around the world from their 1.3 billion subscribers around the world....That would take a bite out of poverty and world hunger...All that other noise is just that.

Free education for all children in public schools. Abolition of children's factory labour in its present form. Combination of education with industrial production,.....

It's identical to the Millenium Objective, a.k.a. Millennium Development Goals ...
World Government or The New World Order.
This is Communism with a politically correct, low calorie content, user friendly, non-confrontational, namby-pamby, non-judgmental, environmentally friendly disguise.

WTF "External forces beyond Dominican Republic’s reach”

Corruption.. Cronyism... shear ignorance… How are they ‘external’?

Do NOT point your finger outside until your back yard is clean.

Typical Dominican “Not me”… “I deserve..” mentality.

DR needs to promote the potato and grow more potatos. Note this also covers yams etc.

I don't see a single announcement in DR on year of the potato.
Come on someone point out the potato is COMMUNIST as it can be grown on a small plot of land and it does not travel very well.

ABC200:

The Potato is ideally grown in higher elevations, in tropical and sub-tropical envirornments. I don't think it's a cash crop for a mainly hot, rainy, low-land tropical environment. If it were that adaptable to the conditions that exist in Quisqueya, they would have jumped on the idea a long time ago. The Potato is grown in equatorial Andean countries (where it originates from) in high elevations, I'd guess in over 6-7 thousand feet.
Remember the great "Potato Famine" of your neighbors the Irish? It grows mostly in cooler climates, chap!

Yam a variety of potato govered by PMB yeilds 60/tons ha. Yams of 2 types are readily available in parts of DR but not the high yeilding varieties.

Technology has developed since the days of the potato famine. Disease can now be controlled.
Of course, everyone must agree with US citizens that anything that is done by international agencies, in Europe or elswhere is past of a vast communist plot.
