Washington. - The U.S. State Department Hemispheric Affairs’ main coordinator for economic initiatives yesterday said one island’s problems cannot be dealt with as two separate things, in reference to Haiti’s calamity and Dominican Republic’s role in its neighboring country’s development.

Charles Shapiro said it’s not possible to speak about Haiti without citing the its neighbor to the east, and that many solutions to Haiti’s problems are found Dominican Republic, “since Dominicans are the ones who know Haiti best.”

The American diplomat, interviewed by journalists from 19 countries in the program with Edward Murrow affirmed that Haiti is the Caribbean’s most serious problem and the solution to its needs merits the international community’s participation and Dominican Republic’s input.

As part of the solution, Shapiro also cited the Dominican entrepreneurs with investments in Haiti, and the Haitians who work on Dominican side of the border and send money back to their country.

Now people stop saying those bad things about Bubba for not thanking the DR in his speech on Haiti

This statement has a lot more weight than Bill Clinton's absent remarks, due to the fact that it comes from official State Department sources.
Slick Willy might work for the UN, but he is retired from the US government and only his wife (the boss) still works there, as a quasi political appointee.
This belated statement is called "damage control" for the obvious Clinton "faux pas", but it does accomplish to bring attention to the Haitian cause and possibly attract more donors, which is what Haiti needs, and the better conditions become in Haiti the better for the DR as a whole.

DR can only do so much, Haiti needs help from larger countries. DR has alot of problems to solve on our side before we can take on more problems.

I said the same thing in the last post where DR can help Haiti most by allowing some of their investors to invest in doing business in Haiti. This does not require DR to provide money or its resources. But that has not happened and for several reasons mostly lying in third world mentalities.

But for the State Department to issue this really mundane response to DR's media attack for acknowledging their roles in the development of Haiti is laughable. I am trying to figure out what have they done. Accepting illegals and students in most regards is something customary other neighboring nations do, except when you are in the island of Hispaniola, where it suppose to be some kind of high end disastrous adventure.

70% of the health budget for towns on the border with Haiti are spend on treating Haitians migrants health issue such women that crossed the border for the sole purpose of giving birth their children in Dominican Republic soil.Wwe do not deny health services to any foreigners in public hospitals and what this guy is saying is insane. Dominican Republic contribute more to Haiti than any other country by far by allowing 2.5 millions illegals Haitians to work and live free in this country. To all of you that voted for President Barrack Obama it is good that this is happening.

Good morning to All.

Guys it is not feasible for DR to Help Haiti anytime soon. DR is not totally out of the gate of poverty. It's nothing but politics as usual. However, If any of these dominant countries wanted to help Haiti's cross over to become a self sufficient land, ithey would of done it years ago. It's nothing but talk. They know what needs to be done in order for Haiti to grow. DR is dealing with it 's own problems, and washington is trying paint a positive picture like GENEROSO said (Damage Control). Haiti is loaded with NGO's !!!! and received more help than most of these other countries go figure!!!Until now there is a $416 Million promised 6 yrs ago and only 4 millions was hand over and guess to who ? NGO. What have they done with that money? Guys this bigger than any of us, all we can do is hope that have a change of heart and stop the bullies. have u guys heard International republican institute? google it

There, I hope most of you are happy now. Now that they have given recognition to DR. Even though it was literally a stupid point of argument that many thought that Bill Clinton did not mention DR on purpose. I mean people do not revolve their speeches around any kind of petty dynamics by singled out individual nations. The mentioned of the other Latin Countries which he stated helped Haiti was suffice enough generally to indicate that any Latin Countries which sees or deems fair to want to help Haiti could is the message he was trying to convey in so more or little context, but I forget some people here are too damn ignorant and literal to have understood simply that.

Indeed, DR is not in a full capacity to cater to Haiti's problem when Haiti's own Government are not pro-active to tackling their own issues. I agree 100% on that premise indeed. Haiti's problems are not DR's and if DR do chose to help, it should be recognized as well as it is at DR own free will to want to do so, but not obligatory. That premise, no matter how many have tried to claim that is what Haitians want, has never been established by Haitians as to that is what they want DR to do. However, I am sure this does not concern the fact that Haiti perhaps might want DR to be more humane about some the Human Right violations social issues of what has been happening to Haitians within DR's borders. That is of course totally different matter and we should never try to confuse their entities as to be the very same matter.

good point. DR is not fully developed. Why should we help when DR is still considered 3rd world?

Haitians know that they have to work toward solutions for Haiti themselves, but as I am also sure they do welcome help from any other nations who wish to want to help them given their Deplorable / Implorable" situation now. At the same time, much like any other Country, we can bet our asses that Haiti does not want to get undignified and be chastised for such help if such help will come at the cost of those Countries belittling and derogate Haiti which seems to be the agenda of many on here wanting to bask, boast, rubbing DR's thus far "little prosperity" is has accomplished in recent years by defaming Haiti and Haitians as less than human beings as many have done on here. Mostly this is the efforts of those who do not want to see any peaceful resolutions and better relations between the two nations as they wish to keep the same divisive practice of division to reign and plague the island as usual.

Also agree 100% with your last comment all the countries have to let Haitians enjoy their place in History about being the 1st black free nation in the new world, being prosperous
200 years ago and all the credit that you want to take from the past but then I believe on my humble
opinion that Haiti has no right to force other nations to comply with any childish pride from the past but instead shut up, being nice and thank the whole international community and DR for not letting
Haitians to practice cannibalism.

Hey Mr. Charles Shapiro why don't we just unify Mexico and the united state of America to be one big happy country with one common problem instead of having two, since you took California, new Mexico, Arizona and other states away from them. it is good to sit on your side and make this false accusations about our beloved Dominican republic when your country on the hand cannot solve their immigrants problem. I love Barrack Obama way of putting pressure on a small country like the dr.

JRRubi,

Naive as you seem to pretend to be, no one has ever asked of DR to bend over and allow Haiti to rule DR as a ghetto. That is an ignorant badgering statement right there on your part inciting ill reactions tapping into the resented xenophobes most already have on here. Do not try to put in the very same basket what is considered to be an immigration / migratory issue with the actual human right violations, nor the social plights of Haiti which cause Haitians to cross over as excuses to say such demeaning statement in effort to win an argument.

As I said, do not confuse one issue for the other; much worse the subject was actually about DR (or better yet) Dominicans who wanted recognition that Bill Clinton had forgotten to mention DR in a given speech. There is a migratory issue which is the cause of lack of opportunity in Haiti not being provided by the Haitian government indeed and their lack of pro-activeness on the issue as well as DR's authority are not pro-active enough because they are so deep within the corruption arena profiting for the situation as well.

This site bans quite partially only those they seem to know might possibly be Haitians (lol). I have seen the worse threads, remarks and ill statements posted by many other Dominicans on here that get totally ignored whom do not adhere to the rules at all. This site being a Dominican site or not. Ill stated racist remarks that are discriminative should not be said about people of any creed especially given the proximity between DR and Haiti which amid all actually do share an island given the circumstances even population. So what this is a Dominican site? Doesn't mean Haitians cannot be on it. Much like America is America and there are several American sites do Americans try to ban those that are not Americans from their sites under premises of knowledge they are of different creed? So who is us the DR trying to subject others not to be here based on their creeds? So much about the concept of us the DR being a melting mix pot or is that per choices of creeds we deem worthy?
