Santo Domingo.- Aimed at developing the towns Cotuí, Fantino and Maimón, the Labor and Health Public ministries signed a cooperation agreement with the gold mining company Pueblo Viejo Dominicana Corporation (Barrick Gold), designed to reduce unemployment and to prevent and reduction dengue and the AH1N1 flu virus.

Via the agreement the Labor Ministry will advise the Municipal Economic and Social Councils on the selection of the candidates for community service and will contribute to the norms and procedures to prepare and establish the Municipal Job Offices.

It will also take conduct research on the needs for labor training and to organize subsequent training along with the Councils, whereas Pueblo Viejo Dominicana Corporation will contribute funds to cover the training for youngsters and with equipment and personnel mobility for the City councils

Well this sounds like a good thing. I think it could have been even better if Barrick Gold had taken the initiative on their own to "contribute to the community" in a positive way. Anytime any government gets involved with things like this, things get convoluted and confusing. (red tape etc).This is a positive step though and an example of "corporate responsibility". Something you don't see much of anymore anywhere. In a past life as an entrepreneur one of my "lessons learned" was to be involved in the community positively in some fashion. It a win-win situation. Just my 2 pesos worth!
