Santo Domingo.– President Leonel Fernandez started today his Christmas gift baskets handout program in Montecristi, for which the government has spent over a billion pesos, the presidency website reported.

According to the report, five million Dominicnas will benefit from the program, whose baskets contain 14 food items, including rice, potatoes, chicken, sweets and wine, among other items traditionally used to make Christmas dinner.

From Montecristi, the President will go to Dajabon and Mao, in Valverde province. On Monday he will head to the south, touring Bahoruco, Azua and San Cristobal. The next two days, Fernandez will visit Nagua, Cotui, Duarte, La Vega, El Seibo and San Pedro de Macoris, where he will have dinner with a poor family.

Its a nice way of doing it - if money is handed out much rum will be bought. Food retailers - in particular supermarkets have been known to hike prices at Xmas with no good reason - come on folks be generous and support the President in this one! Really in many developing countries large social housing programs with the encouragement of allotments / smallholdings is needed together with progress towards green sustainablity.

This a degrading and humiliating act on the part of this president who has wasted billion of dollars on useless projects, corruption , kickbacks and botellas. Now he takes taxpayer money to give “gifts” to the have-nots with their own money!

He is always willing to give fish but never teaches then how to fish, continuing with the cycle of dependency. And for the LIE-onelitas, yeah, yeah, I know other presidents did it too, so what, that still doesn’t make it right especially for the perfect and ultra-modern LIE-onel Fernandez.

POBREZA

There must be many families who eagerly wait for these handouts at Christmas time and who could not afford to purchase a bottle of wine for themselves. It may have an air of patronising the less fortunate but why we should, who do not receive this gift, judge the reaction of those who do.
The idea of giving gifts at this time of the year extends to employers who give christmas bonuses and to friends and family members who give gifts now and at Epiphany and it is contained in the bible stories of gifts being brought to our Lord.
Christmas is the time of year for charitable and loving feelings to all mankind as many carols remind us and I hope the recipients of these gifts now can have a better christmas.

Here is my Chritmas Basket for LIE-onel Fernandez and his admiriring loyal subject of the British crown:

Ningún funcionario está por encima de nuestras leyes

El recién enviado Anteproyecto de Ley de Presupuesto para el año 2010, es un ejemplo de esto, pues de aprobarse violaría leyes en conjunto, por alrededor de RD$59,000.00 millones

And Ricky who his judging or begrudging the poor for wanting to get was is bought with their own tax pesos?

What I don't like is the hypocrisy and the crocodile tears.

Does LIE-onel Fernandez have the same compassion and concern for the other 364 nights the poor must provide a meal for their children?

Why doesn't LIE-onel Fernandez have dinner with the wife and children of his missing college professor, Narciso González and bring them some news, so they can have some peace, which has been missing from their lives since May 26, 1994.

Josean ..you are wrong on my reaction to the constitution and I have written at least 5 times before about it ..I think it is a total disgrace when a constitution that is for all the people of the country has not even been seen by probably 95% of the population ,,not even in an edited form ..and who wants politicians ,who most of us have a poor opinion of. deciding on a constitution that is a comprimise between two political parties after having given a good talking to by the Roman Catholic Church in this country whic hintself has an appalling record of educating it.s people and caring for their welfare.

I saw the army doing it in Samana. 6 army trucks 3 lines about 30 soldiers per line. Apparently 10 trucks - maybe 100 tons of food. At 20 lbs per parcel 100 parcels per ton - 10,000 people possible with one unit one day. I did some some supply distribution - its remarkably transparent - people can take photographs, you can count the number of parcels distributed per hour. You can ask the odd person to weigh and assess the contents. One of my ex-acquaintances, long dead now, remembered doing this in Germany in the immediate post-war period. A near starving population, long lines, huge difficulties e.g fuel for lorries.

I suppose that we all care for the well being of our country, since we are in here reading this in the first place, and with insults we are getting no where...if you disagree give reasons and support it with facts, if you disagree dont simply say because the other person es un imbecil, o porque no piensa como tu. Un dialogo es intercambiar ideas, esto se llama tener tolerancia por las ideas del projimo, y es lo unico que ayuda a fortaleser nuestras propias ideas.

How stupid - in advanced countries 70% of the jobs depened directly or indirectly on the government.
Without a government creating jobs and protecting agriculture and the jobs of theppor the poor are nowhere.
The Worlds biggest employers -
Chinese army Indian state railways,
British Health Service.
It is amazing to me that there are posters like this!
Keynes was right - the reason the Egyptians maintained full employment is that the kept building pyramids.
Two pyramids, two masses for the dead, are twice as good as one; but not so two railways from London to York.
The social object of skilled investment should be to defeat the dark forces of time and ignorance which envelope our future.
Keynes goes on to explain that only the government can make skilled investment.

PART I

ABC200
I want to start with your video prior to getting into what I meant by dependant on any form of government, and then you proceeding to call it stupid when you clearly decided to look at it from a very extremist point of view.

About the video: You are really going to take a news report by the united states which is making fun of Palin to attack us? Come on seriously? Why do you think she still remains a laughing matter in American Politics? One thing was if you were taking something reported outside of American soil making fun of Palin, but even then it would be “stupid” because we have made enough, and continue to make fun of her within our own boundaries.

On the matter of government intervention, I will make the assumption that we all agree and believe that government intervention is clearly needed to achieve well being in any country. What I was referring to when I decided to quote...

From: United States, Boston, MA

Cont. PART II

economic recovery striving for the poor to become self sufficient not dependent on any form of Government” was the form of government which was being represented by the giving away of food once a year to their poor citizens. I see and understand how you would take that and take it to mean something along the lines of Adam Smith’s ideology of efficient way of running things, through letting the invisible hand do its part, but see, I don’t believe in the invisible hand, which in any case would be a Gucci gloved hand. But once again, I see why you would take it as that, considering that it does say any form of government.

Part of the reason why I do not believe in most of Adam Smith’s bullshit is because of many things including his famous quote;”It is not from the benevolence of the butcher, the brewer, or the baker that we expect our dinner, but from their regard to their own interest.”

PART III

And his very disillusioned way of looking at human nature, whatever that truly is. But I also credit my disheartened view of Mr. Smith to Keynes writing and the fact that I do agree with many of his ideas, which very much disagree with Smith. But back to the article, and how you used Keynes to support the giving of the baskets, and somehow applaud the government, and correlate it to Keynes ideas is wrong.

The giving of the basket has nothing to do with government intervention in our economy, such as what the Egyptians did to maintain full employment, or nothing even close to the British Health Service. The giving of the baskets is charity, it is noble and yes it is nice that he is giving food to our people, but he needs to not to give the fish but to teach them how to fish as Riosm quoted before.

CONT TO PART IV (last part)
Written by: dali716, 12 Jan 2010 12:59 PM
From: United States, Boston, MA

LAST PART: PART IV

A perfect example of Keynes ideas and the biggest example to his “General theory” work was the emergence of FDRs New Deal which as we all know was a spending program, and designed to help people help themselves, not free give away of food, which does nothing and would put Keynesian Economics to shame, so why even mention it in your analysis?

And about the last things you said that only government can make skilled investment, only if the government is doing its job right, and our experiences with that is very sad. In Keynes' view, when main pillars of the economy are failing - consumer spending, investment and net exports - the only pillar that is left to support the economy is the government…But when the government is doing a lousy job that really sucks…there was a wonderful attempt with the train to Santiago, he needs to finish what he started, and think along those lines.
