Mao, Dominican Republic. - Dominican Authorities today agreed to allow thousands of Haitians who work in farms and other areas in the country’s northwest to return in January

Jesuit priest Regino Martinez, coordinator of Border Solidarity in Dajabón province (northwest), together with representatives of the Catholic Church, local NGOs and farmers, told reporters the measure is important because it prevents the inconvenience of previous years, when thousands of Haitian farm workers were stopped at the border after visiting Haiti to spend the holidays.

Last January Dominican authorities repatriated hundreds of undocumented Haitians who took refuge in Dajabón’s Our Lady del Rosario church, to protest being halted from crossing into the Dominican side of the border.

If Hatians come to DR and have a job, I dont have a problem with that as long as they pay taxes too and do something productive to better themselves and our country while they are at it.
Mexican seasonal workers come here to Canada to work on Farms and when the season is over they return to Mexico. Canadians look down at this kind of jobs just like some dominicans do. Is hard labour and long hours with little pay.

I have a problem though with those who do come illigaly to beg, steal, kill and destroy our resources.

So if there are farm jobs available they should be allowed to apply for a temporary work permit and better themselves, their families and our country!

The US, Canada and a number of other countries gave us Dominicans that same chance, and we are better of because of it. The Dominican Goverment justs needs to smarten up and run the immigration Dept. more efficiently.

We live in a society where the most admired qualities are the ability to lie, steal, murder, bribe, and cheat. Are the Haitians any worse? Oh, that's right, they don't have money to pay bribes.

I hope I don’t get beat up too bad for this one! We have a Haitian that has worked for us for the last year. Before that we had the attitude that “When in Rome, do as the Romans do”. The first Dominican that worked for us overcharged, extorted money from other workers we hired, stole food, drinks (no direct steeling of money), invited the whole town over to our casa while we were away for several weeks then threatened to sue us after we fired him even after we paid him according to Dominican labor law. On and on. (I was blind and way to trusting. Lesson learned). We hired another Dominican and let him go before the 90 day “full time employee” period. Lazy and stubborn as mule. We hired a Haitian that had worked for us part time before. NO PROBLEMO! Exemplary employee and very intelligent. (English, Spanish and French speaking). He has worked to get passport and visa and will be going “home” for the holidays. He is legal and I hope he makes it back with no problems.

I'm glad you posted your story, I hope he is able to return to work with you too, trustworthy, hard working employees are hard to find! :)

Good morals or lack of them are not a Hatian or a dominican thing......is how an individual was brought up and the values that person has!

See you fellows i need to focus my brain cells on more constructive and proactive issues.

Before suggesting solutions for the problem i suggest you take a trip back to DR and ask the local salaries. For RD$600.00 you will find a lot of Dominicans willing to work because is a livable salary. Construction goes for around RD$300.00 a day for most Haitian which is a position that pays more than sugar cane fields.Sugar cane goes for RD$120.00 to RD$200.00 if lucky. Please people before talking about solutions make sure you have taken a trip into the country in the last 5 years.

I mentioned this a year ago or so, and perhaps time is appropriate to repeat it.

My family owns the largest roofing company in the state of Florida, and we also do a great deal of construction. It has been our experience that the Haitians we've dealt with are very decent people. They pay their bills on time and are great customers. We also employ several Haitian nationals and they are some of the most loyal workers I've ever seen. I appreciate them and am happy to call some of them friend. BTW, this is a lot more than I could say about some of the compatriots we've hired.

Anyway, about the featured picture, it just does not convey a message of compassion or civility or safety. These people are being herded like common sheep and, no matter how nationalistic we might be, that just doesn't seem right to me. Remember that many of us enjoy a similar status in the US-would you like to be treated similarly? I think not.

Many interesting comments here.
Imejia, yes, many from Mexico, Ecuador, etc come to Canada, mostly at harvest time. It is not so much because Canadians look at these jobs. They are seasonal jobs. Students are often, at that time, getting ready for another school year. Others know that even if they took the job, it would not be enough to receive "Unimployment" after... And I admit, many "city kids" would die... These workers must now be paid minimum wage (9-10$ / hour). They are known to be hard workers. Some have come back for 3-4 months for the last 20 years.
May the eager, the good, the honest workers always have a chance to work, no matter where!!!

vacanos,
Yea, I heard about this. It happened about ...what 6-8 months ago? Not to far from where I live.(50 miles er so?) All about drugs and money. While in the US this sort of thing happens all the time but we got some sort of an immunity from it.
I take responsibility for myself and part of that is protecting myself. Thanks for the "heads up" and your concern...really! I live in the DR and am always looking over my shoulder!
Thanks mon!

I refuse to blame the Haitians who are leaving their country to find work elsewhere. I put all of the blame on the Haitian Government that has failed its citizens by not creating jobs for its people.
Those Haitian leaders have no shame. Their lack of leadership have caused Haiti to become undignified in the eyes of the world. Perhaps, the Dominican Republic Leaders can teach them a few things on how to Modernize their Haiti by building its Infrastructure, Encouraging Farmers to grow food and livestock to feed the people. Encouraging Tourism and Foreign Investments to Manufacture Goods which will create tons of Jobs in the Country to stimulate the Haitian Economy. Haitians are good and hard workers but they have lousy Leaders who have no Economic Ambitions for the country. They have been on the Regressive mode for years. Only they themselves can Change that. Or, instead of fleeing the country, they should Remain in it and Demand all of the Progressive Actions above mentioned.
