Santo Domingo.- Right in the heart of Santo Domingo’s Colonial Zone is an area not generally talked about. Behind the indoor market visited by thousands of tourists a year are four blocks that make up an area known by the locals as "Little Haiti."
Plagued with poverty, not just Haitians but Dominicans live together, selling whatever they can in order to eat on a daily basis. Contrasted so greatly are these covered streets to those well kept area; the worn faces to those well taken care ones, and those living in poverty to the tourists.
These are the faces of Little Haiti, preceded by the surrounding area, juxtaposing the two extremely different lifestyles that co-exist in the squalid barrio, showing us those pools of society that may be frequently overlooked by most.

Poor and black Dominicans are now classified as "Illegals"
Deport them to where?
From: Dominican Republic
This is typical! Whenever there is economic development, the poor jump in and fill the available space trying to catch in the hiring and/or consumer spending. These are the poor that bring in garbage (they trash the area), contamination, poor quality, lots of traffick (bottleneck) jam, and antisocial acts.
Since the poor can't afford child care, the mother has to bring the whole family to the area (some of those children work along with the adult). Just because we have poverty and middle class in the same area does not mean we have to incurr bailouts (more ITBIS) to rescue these interlopers!
Just simply let them do their business as long they don't destroy the environment!

Etiennec suck this! It was god who created the race! About 200,000 years ago, god decide to create the Mongoloids, Congoloids, Capoids, Australoids, and the Caucasoids! The race arise from regional, weather, and flora variations. The race serve as a tool to fight stresses that may threaten the human species.
Gizmo is right! The racial distribution in DR is 16 % white, 73 % mulato, and 11 % negroid! SO LIVE WITH THE TRUTH! HAITIAN HOLE!

le trou de mierda did you say 73% mulattoes ????
Well let me define a mulattoe for you.
Primero, have the spelling wrong , It spells m-u-l-a-t-t-o-e-.A person born from one ehite parent and one black parent.
You have also used the word "negroid,( not in scientific use) you could have used used black instead since the offspring of a white and a negroid are not inevitably mulattoe
I just wanted to confused you and make you think for while. Is the son of a mullatoe Dominican mother and a black Haitian father HAITIAN ????
Or let put it this way ,is the son of Jose Pena Gomez Haitian or Dominican ???
le troude mierda, just revisit the informations that you have plageriazed and notice some pertinent informations that you have left out by mistake.

I don't know if you have reading comprehension problems, but her post makes perfect sense to me. In fact, no one have to be a rocket scientist to know or see that the traditional dominican underclass is being substituted by the one from the other side of the island, which is easily recognized by the fact that the majority of the people conforming this new underclass are only kreyol speaking and don't understand one iota of spanish.

Great God Domincan chic you have got me all confused . How did blacks land on Dominican soil in the first place.

Easy ettienc. They composed a good chunk of the people on the yolas crossing the Mona Passage. Surely it's not a secret for you that the population on our eastern provinces (San Pedro, La Romana, Monte Plata, Hato Mayor, El Seybo and Higuey) is black on its majority, specially the one from San Pedro de Macoris, whose people are in their majority descendants from british west indiamen/women that came to the country to cut sugarcane at the end of the XIX century. This is what sets them apart from the Cibao and the South, whose population is of mixed extraction (white a few all-white cantons in the Cibao).

Its all relative. For the average Haitian taking up Dominican air space , life is a 5 star resort compared to what they crawled out from under on the other side of the hill... What can I say without being hypocritical ? My cracker barrel full of white ancestors sailed over to the Red mans land and pissed on thier beaches in search of a better bread topping and Im reaping the rewards of it while Chief sitting bulls grandchildren rot on a reservation and pray to the great spirit for our death . I dont think any Dominican living in the Big Manzana can throw stones at a Haitian climbing the fence while they drink coffee in a Starbucks that sits on what used to be some poor injuns gift shop ..???

Senoras y Senores, Monsieur et Madames poverty is poverty whether is be in Port du Prince or Santo Domingo we Dominicans as well as Haitians suffer it in both our cities. The only true "dominicans and Haitians" are the Tainos that got erased from the island through the European's greed. Why are we being racists? we are both a mixture of slaves and europeans not only in our island, but all the Caribbean. I ask of both the nations where did we loose sight of our common problem of poverty and finding a solution? Instead we sit here picking at each other like we are in elementary. Both equally too proud of the little european that is left in our blood; to blind to act in union and to rise above the so called "3rd world country" that everyone thinks of us. I propose that we set our quarrels aside and assist each other.

Nothing can be further from the truth. However, their “Dominican whiteness mask” melts, when the so Called “blanquitos dominicanos” set foot on JFK, or any other major port of entry in the continental US, and a big, mean looking Afro-American/caucasian INS officer, tells them “hey you’re on the wrong line”; this is for US CITIZENS ONLY; or when the US Coast Guard, literally fish them out of the Mona’s waters and parades them in front the TV cameras as the whole world watches on. I am positively sure that they get a flash backs and start thinking about the Haitians' inmigration issues.

Wow, I can't really stomach the vitriolic attacks on Haitian-Dominicans on this forum. Some of you should come and visit Washington Heights. You'll realize that solidarity between the Haitian-American community and the Dominican-American community is one of our strengths in the U.S. Immigration Reform debate. We are all brown people, and we should be proud of both our African and European roots. I know a lot of Dominicans in NYC that "charcoal black" and even more Haitians that obviously have both European and Black ancestry. Poverty is poverty and no matter the color of the person living in miserable conditions, they deserve our concern and respect for their human dignity. Dominicans who have displayed such racism in the comments on this article need to look inward. We are all humans no matter our color. All humans should have their rights recognized and upheld as a matter of law.
