Lake Enriquillo, Dominican Republic.- Haiti and the Dominican Republic have joined forces with the support of the United Nations to tackle environmental degradation resulting from rising water levels in lakes near their common border, the UN reports on its Web site.

It said roads along the border and running through the two countries "have been noticeably damaged by overflowing water, which has had a devastating effect on biodiversity and agriculture." Communities already mired in poverty and vulnerable to extreme weather events have also been dealt a harsh blow by the rising lake levels.

The UN News Centre notes that even if the heavy rains in recent years abate, the water levels in Lake Azuei in Haiti and Lake Enriquillo in the Dominican Republic – both at the foot of mountains – will continue to rise "To address the problem, the two countries are cooperating with the UN Development Program (UNDP), the UN Environment Program (UNEP) and the World Food Program (WFP)."

The partnership seeks to boost research on the watersheds supplying the lakes, implement a plan for reforestation, slow down the rate of erosion, and promote development to increase income for lakeside communities, the organization said. "The environment ministers of Haiti and the Dominican Republic signed a declaration last month to cooperate in finding a solution to the problem."

Clam down AC, too much rain in this specific are is dangerous. Due to the lack of trees, shrubs and grass in the sorrounding, rain here can have very dire consequences. This area is completely devoid of vegetation to support heavy rains and so its residents must brace themseleves for things to come unless a drastic plan is implemented to change this. Its a real pitty that the govt doesn't invest in this forgotten region with so much potential. Just think of all the unemployed people that could be utilized for a massive, scientifically designed reforestation project. Not like those currently been carried out now with no planning. Instead of paying botellas to big wigs in the capital, that money could be used to pay these people for their services. This would in turn activate the economity in the south, prevent migration to other cities, arrest ecological degradation and also this could be used as an educational tool to teach these people better environmental practices.

Sajomero is right, in the 1980s the lake-desert was surounded by lush vegetartion, but thatt's when the vicious cycle ravage started, a la Flores Estrella in Puerto Escondido, no trees, no water retention, erosion, rising lake level, and to survive, the campesinos running for the hills to chop down the few trees left.

Rain with no trees is a bis problem. The roots hold the soil and avoid mudslides and the leaves slow down the rain hitting the ground and avoid flash floods. Rain in the central part of DR is not a huge problem because of the thick rain forests and pine trees. That is a good idea sajomero, there are alot of people doing nothing and could be used for that purpose.
I have said this before but DR needs to add underground water storage tanks to hold flood waters. Then the water should be used localy. Chicago has underground storage systems, the water is treated and then released back to lake Michigan

Do NOT call this environmental degradation. The degradation is due to the misuse of the land, forest and hills by MAN. The lake is only reclaiming the land it has had for millions of years.
The environment is Lago Enriquillo in its ancient place which should be surrounded by hills of forest which would be absorbing that EXTRA rain, not letting it erode away the hillsides.

Sajomero is ABSOLUTELY correct. Fix the forests, and the problem will go away. The DR is not getting more rain than decades ago, it just can handle it because of deforestation. There is an aerial photo displayed that covers the DR and Haiti border from Perdenales North. The color change from brown (Haiti), to green (well into the DR) is a dramatic picture of the roots of the problem

all right guys lakes problems can be solved between HAI and DR but UN militaries interest is surely not rain and forest .It sounds like strategy position or underground minerals cos studies reveal something more precious in the area of the largest lakes of the caribean

This is ludicrous ,Haiti can't take of the lawn of a typical suburban home, and obviously can't handle the deforestation caused by their citizens so besides the fact that Haiti does not exist as a sovereign nation make this a ridiculous claim. The people in charge of Haiti (UN) should coordinate with Dominican officials to correct the problems in that area .
