Santo Domingo. - A group of women and Latin America and the Caribbean feminist entities will build an international refugee camp in the western border town Jimaní, to provide psychological, health and economic assistance to Haitian women and children victims of the quake.

Sergia Galván and Magalis Pineda, representatives of Dominican organizations, and, Haiti feminist and ex Minister of Women of the that country Lise Marie Jean, said the camp will be operating in Dominican territory, until sufficient aid is channeled to guarantee the stability of Haitian women.

They said the shelter will also serve to prevent the trafficking of children across the border, while alerting organisms such as the United Nations Fund for Children (Unicef), to confront that practice.

The ex Haitian minister said the quake claimed the lives of three feminists  leaders of that nation, Myriam Merlet, Amne Marie and Magalie Paricele and destroyed training centers, schools, an infirmary and several universities.

The Dominican and Haitian women said the camp, to be named after the late Haitian leader Myriam Merlet, will begin operations this week, with attention on the prevention of situations of disaster, mental health and create leadership initiatives for the affected women, so they can begin to rebuild their country.

The initiative is from Dominican women, who formed the space together with representatives from organizations in Brazil, Nicaragua, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Honduras Panama, the United States and  Haiti.
