Santo Domingo. – The death of at least 135 Haitians from a reported outbreak of cholera has forced the various aid groups to mobilize emergency medicines and other materials to fight it, before it becomes that impoverished nation’s major post-quake health crisis and which prompted Dominican Republic’s Public Health Minister’s warning that it poses “all the danger in the world” for his country.
The outbreak in the rural region Artibonite, which houses thousands of the quake victims, materialized the fears of aid groups that the squalor would heighten the problems for people lodged in the makeshift tent cities cloaked in misery.
"We had feared this situation from the quake," said Robin Mahfood, head of the group Food for the Poor, which was readying a shipment of donated antibiotics, re-hydrator salts and other materials by air.
Many patients go to the hospital St. Nicholas in the coastal city St. Marc, where hundreds of dehydrated patients are fed intravenously while laying on blankets in the parking lot floor awaiting specialized medical attention.
Haiti’s Health Ministry has registered 135 deaths and more than 1,000 infected, said Catherine Huck, Assistant director in the country of the United Nations Humanitarian Affairs Coordination Office.
“We know that there are people with diarrhea and vomiting, who can pass away soon if the don’t receive timely medical attention. Doctors await lab results to confirm what disease they are dealing with.”

It is a damn shame with all the promise of aid that it has barely materialized, and then only enough to keep the people alive and dependent on daily aid and penned together where given enough time this was bound to happen. Chance - maybe malevolent planning would be more accurate. A filtered drinking water system and proper disposal of human waste is elementary first steps to take for people crowded together. Shelter would be a distant third. Most importantly give the people the tools and the guidance to take care of their own needs as much as possible. Haitians will self police their own ranks quite effectively if left to their own devices and any would be thieves among them know that.

WARNING TO ALL HAITIANS AND DOMINICANS...Theres several reports that indicate that villages have witnessed MINUSTAH/UN (From the Napal contingent) dumping their portable toilet septic tanks into rivers in the rural regions and this could have been the cause of the cholera outbreak. Those napolonese UN troops are from a country where there is a high case of cholera. Cholera has not been a problem in HISPANIOLA (HAITI/DR) in nearly a half a century, why is it now that its as problem!?! Those areas where they detected the cholera were not even hit by the earthquake. I hope an investigation is conducted before the UN can coverup and hide their trails. The Haitian and Dominicans need to ask the UN troops to test themselves and see if they are a carrier of cholera. Some carriers do not have any adverse effects to the cholera but it remains in their waste. Investigation needs to be conducted.

All patriotic haitians and dominicans should support the closing of that border.
if not..haiti will remain as is...and DR will become 50% haitian.
North and South Korea share a peninsula...yet they have a mine field as a border....and they are the same people.
Haiti's salvation and DR preserving itself rest with forcing Haiti to grow and removing DR as a crutch.
And please refrain from making assertions about my or haitiansensation's economic standing.......and just address the issue. We will do likewise.
these hungry and desperate people are in no condition to formulate a long term view.
It is up to those in the know to use the masses to get the message across.
Haiti's cheap labor and open market are being used for the benefit of ONE country, DR.
This unhealthy relationship must cease if haiti is to have the space and face the necessity to stand up.
So I welcome these border clashes and hope for more anti-haitianism among the dominican populace.......to force haitians to wake up.
