Port-au-Prince.– By early Saturday, nearly 200 people were confirmed dead due to a cholera outbreak that has spread outside a rural valley in neighboring Haiti, which is considered the nation's worst health crisis since the Jan. 12 quake.
The first two cholera cases outside the central Artibonite region
were confirmed Friday in Arcahaie, a town closer to the quake-devastated
capital, Port-au-Prince. Experts also were investigating possible cases
in Croix-des-Bouquet, a suburb of the capital, and radio reports said
there were two dozen cases of diarrhea on Gonave island.
Health
officials are fearful about the outbreak spreading into the capital,
where thousands and thousands of people are living in unsanitary
conditions in refugee camps.
According to Jon Andrus, deputy director of
the Pan American Health Organization's Regional Office for the Americas, the number of cases is expected to grow since Haitians do not have
any built-up immunity to cholera. The organization is sending medical teams to the Dominican Republic as
a preventive measure.

U.S. CHOLERA CASES SET RECORD IN 1992
ATLANTA, Sept. 10 — A cholera outbreak aboard an Argentine airplane bound for Los Angeles helped push the number of travel-related cholera cases in the United States to an all-time high, Federal health officials said today.
The airplane cases resulted from a cholera outbreak that began in Peru in 1991 and has now spread to Mexico and the Caribbean, resulting in 5,000 deaths along the way, the Federal Centers for Disease Control reported.
Cholera is a severe diarrhea that can be accompanied by vomiting and dehydration. It is caused by contaminated foods and water, and can be fatal in cases of extreme dehydration.
The centers said that 96 cholera cases had been reported in the United States since January and that 95 of those were travel related. The cause of the remaining case is unknown. Outbreak From Flight.

Perhaps LF may be looking (in his twisted mind) at this developing tragic cholera outbreak as a bonus for the DR. If cases are identified in the DR, the aid and money from outside will flood in ! Ergo, money for him !
If he decides to close the borders, he will automatically shut off the potential money flow directly into the DR (indirectly into his pockets).
He (LF) is crazy not to protect his citizens of the DR ! That is not leadership !

I feat that the 'evil empire' the US has left the DR carrying the can for Haiti. The US spends only a tiny proprtion of its budget in aid. UK, for example is increasing this to 0.7%.
Only in fifty years time will the role of the US become clear over the Aristide episodes, one suspects that the corporate interests that want shirts sewn for 2 dollars a day induced his overthrow.
Countries such as DR would be well advised to secure strong links with Europe, Asia - including PRC , Venzueala, Brazil etc. and have armies/navy with good weapons to repel invaders.
Till this happens any thought of closing the border etc. is just wishful thinking. Countries should also avoid excessive US trade.

Reports are coming out that MINUSTHA has been emptying its toilets in the Artibonite River.
Many of these UN troops are from cholera prone countries.
From: Puerto Rico, United States, HAITI, Puerto Rico
I heard MINUSTAH (UN) and NGO's have been contaminating some of the rivers. Haiti has not had problems with cholera in almost half a century (60 years) but why is it now that Haiti has problems with cholera. This is very suspicious. I think there needs to be an investigation. I think Haiti will be ok once the Haitian health officials and the U.S. health officials get this under control. I think a formal investigation needs to be conducted as well to see how this happened.
From: Puerto Rico, United States, HAITI, Puerto Rico
TO HAITIANS AND DOMINICANS: There are reports that UN troops from Napal (cholera plagued country in Asia) is responsible for starting the cholera outbreak in Haiti. Investigations are ongoing. Don't let the UN in DR especially the dirty napalenese. May God Bless Hispaniola.
From: Zambia, I LIKE MY HAITIAN SHAKEN NOT STIRRED!
I'm ashamed of my Haitian people always blaming others for our troubles, is not fair. The cholera outbreak occurred because Haiti lacks clean water infrastructure. Haitians use the contaminated river streams, for everything from cleaning dishes to bathing themselves, even for irrigation for agriculture. To even cleaning their clothing, and even using the same as a personal toilet. The guy above me, is a serious excuse of a human being, the U.N. has helped stop the gang violence and crime in Haiti. Sure theirs been incidents that U.N. soldiers have done wrong things, but in most cases the U.N. is trying it's best to keep the country secured.

The situation in haiti has been the same for 50 years yet no cholera outbreak until the Nepalese.

Cholera is endemic in nepal and there was an outbreak there last month right before a fresh group of Nepalese arrived.........and the epidemic started exactly where these Nepalese are stationed...in the Artibonite.
