Santiago, Chile.- Dominican Republic will reduce its poverty index 3.2 points from 44.3% to 41.1%, this year, says a report by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (Cepal), published yesterday in Chile.
Cepal affirms that Latin America’s vigorous economic recovery this year will prompt a fall in poverty in most of the region’s countries in 2010.
Latin America’s social panorama for 2010, presented in Santiago by Cepal Executive secretary Alicia Bárcena, projects that poverty and extreme poverty will decline 1.0 and 0.4 percentage points compared with 2009, when the global financial crisis inflicted its sharpest impact on the region.
It’s expected that 32.1% of Latin America’s inhabitants will remain in a situation of poverty and 12.9% in extreme poverty in 2010, or 180 million poor, of which 72 million would be in a situation of extreme poverty, returning to similar levels posted in 2008.
Cepal’s report highlights that despite the crisis’ strong repercussions in the region, poverty rose only one tenth of a percentage point (from 33.0% to 33.1%) in 2009.
Bárcena said the figures spark optimism that the region is again on the path to reduce poverty, a tendency which began in 2003.
“The countries of the region reveal a resilience in the social variables which hadn’t been registered in preceding crises.”

What it should say is they went from Destituite ( extreme poverty) to regular poverty, which is a big jump from absolute nothingness to be able to eat once a day and drink clean water which is the real jump.

thanks for your input, planner. this is just another of those idiotic , feel good press releases, with no basis in reality. anyone can throw out some silly statistic , and have it say anything they wish to disseminate. the reality is that there are more people struggling today than 4 years ago. just ask anyone if they feel better off now than same time last year. when you do the survey, exclude politicos and their relatives, friends and concubines. just the regular guy in the street.

I tend to agree with dreadlocks and planner on this one ..and although I applaud the huge improvements in the infrastructure around the country , I really think the country now needs to concentrate more resources on social programmes such as providing good education , clean water , health care and by looking after the poor , To have good roads and bridges but more than 40% of the people living in poverty is, in my opinion , close to evil.

I was there for 10 day after the fifth day i wanted to came back, can go out at night unless you have a few individuals with you and you got to becareful with then too they my sold you out even if they are your family etc. so thing is not that great when your own people would like to jack you up, so is is not about been negative it is the way of life in dr and the people on top that make that beuatiful island seem like hell.

From: United States
there goes Pepe, bawling again, about those hateful posters, who have nothing good to say about the DR. those pesky foreigners, he whines. well, little Pepecito, the preponderant number of complaints are from Dominicans living abroad, who have come for vacation, and are mortified by some of what they see. it is normal for people living abroad, who have been exposed to modern modalities, to see the deficiencies in their countries, and lament the failures. so, once again, i implore you to grow a pair of nuts, and to stop being so adolescent and thin skinned. i can point you to several posters on this very site , who have told me by pm that they would never invest a dollar here, and cautioned me to follow suit. then again, i will not, since such correspondence is confidential.

Dready,
As you should well know this issue is far more complex for it involves a large and growing flow of migrants from Haiti's poorest sectors into DR. Early this year a certain Frenchman made the observation that for DR to uplift her poorer members into the middle class level a radical shift away from using the wage cutting pressures of Haiti's poor had to be addressed. His suggestion was to cut the flow or DR's poorest citizens would find it very difficult if impossible to gain ascendancy.
Another issue involves the transfers made by working Dominican in the US, Europe and other parts of the world. These huge flows 2-3 billion dollars per year support many Dominican families, and one could actually make the case that it functions like a Social Security/Welfare Department. Only it's funded by the private sector individual and families overwhelmingly Dominicans! Private Social Security and Welfare all rapped in one!! Who said Dominicans don't take care of their own. :)

I am very critical of many things that are wrong with my country but when someone ONLY has negative things to say about the country and they spend their time in a Dominican forum one can only conclude that these people are anti-Dominican.
When I see a balance between the criticism and the praise for some small progress areas the I will understand that a person is truly being critical in a positive manner but these people use the worst terms to define our country yet want us to use kid gloves on the Haitians who contribute to more backwardness than we already have.

I teach adult education in New England and have a preponderance of Dominican students, as well as a large contingent fro Haiti. I read this site to keep up on the news in the area - first because I CARE about the lives, cultures and historial background of my students, and second, because I don't want all hell breaking loose in my classroom one day because regional 'tensions' are being played out in class. Even when criticising their are different nuances in the words chosen which can make a difference between POSITIVE and NEGATIVE criticism and the posters I am referring to NEVER have anything positive to say which indicates a clear bias and a hidden agenda. The fact is most of these posters are either Haitians or Afrocentrists who clearly have a fixation with my country and who provoke the majority of the more radical responses.
We are a small poor nation with many problems but we love our country above all and will not tolerate outsiders with bad intentions towards our country and though many cannot put these sentiments in clear terms you are seeing the full range of sentiments of Dominicans in this forum

The fact is most of these posters are either Haitians or Afrocentrists who clearly have a fixation with my country and who provoke the majority of the more radical responses.
if you were not such a self loathing Dominican , it would have crossed your mind that the most unrelenting critics of the DR are not Haitians and afrocentrics, as you call them. many are Dominicans themselves, and most are foreigners who are dismayed at the conditions they saw here , before most of them packed up and went back home. but it makes you comfortable to believe that the detractors are dark skinned, because, in your mind, talking back to white people should not even be considered, since, in the human pecking order, they are better than you are, and should be treated with due deference. i feel so sad for you and your ilk.

although the fact that the forum is in English brings in elements that would not be involved if this were in our Spanish language, both from the US influenced diaspora and the foreign elements I mentioned previously who are in their majority anti-Dominican due to a lack of understand and respect for the difference in perceptions of race in DR and how Dominicans define themselves which is in simple terms that Dominicans consider themselves multiracial while the detractors want all Dominicans to define themselves as Black according to the racist US Jim Crow laws .Some children of Dominicans raised in the US have also adapted this ideology but these have also lost their Dominican culture for a US ghetto culture so they are not truly representative of Dominican culture which is defined in Spanish and within Dominican Criollo culture.

From: United States
Pepe, the issue is not that i think too much of myself. it is that i think very little of you. as has been evidenced over the past, you are an infantile racist and idiot, who is a loathsome coward. you believe that Dominicans who disagree with your viewpoint are traitors, as was seen in your forum rant against Tupapaupa. as is your custom, when he retaliated, you put your scruffy little tail between your legs and ran for the hills. you are great at berating up on Haitians, but have no stomach for real fights. i have put you in your place ,cowering in a corner, many a time and oft, and i am very well disposed to keep up the assault on your stupidity. grow up, and learn to be a man. it does not hurt nearly as much as you think it might.

Many people you call Dominican can barely speak Spanish and grew up in the same "cultural" element you defend making them only Dominican by name but not by culture for a Dominican may criticise at times be we will find some good to say and even defend our country but those of you who hate my country NEVER have anything positive to say about my country and conversely find grains of hope in Haiti's disastrous existence. The fact that you and the others are clearly biased is obvious to any objective observer so you can rant and rave and call me all your infantile names in your anglo centric condescending manner but the truth is obvious .
Show me ONE post of yours that is POSITIVE about my country and I might change my mind but all I have seen and see day to day is you jumping in with the likes of Harrington (probably another Caribbean boy) and others is to jump on the negative points of my country .
I can show many posts in which I criticise my country but my words are constructive criticism and I will also support any small steps taken to improve which is the case with Atabey and others who are Dominican and criticise but also defend.
I would like all those hypocrites on this forum who only find negatives about Dominican Republic to explain WHY they are in a Dominican site if they can never find at least one small positive to comment on ......
I think we all know!
Now as far as running ,I will not waste my time with your compadre who's biggest contribution to this forum is a drinking thread and who is not even worth responding to .I can respond to your ridiculous and hypocritical comments because they are at least formed into sentences while your compadres brain cells seem to have been wiped by alcohol.
As far as disagreements ,I disagree with Cibao on many points ,with Atabey on several issues and with others but they have demonstrated that they are first and foremost Dominicans with the interests of the country in mind but someone like papaupa who has a ghetto mentality will obviously be more culturally in tune with someone of your ilk.
Constructive criticism Dready, that's the key. When we see it, we have NO reason to doubt that a certain pro-Dominicaness is at the heart of its speaker and writer; be they Dominican or not.
Now, now Dready you're getting silly again.
why, thank you. at least sometimes i am not, unlike you.
I know that my antagonism to the first "black " republic irks you ,but that will not change unless the majority of Haitians were to leave my country and we both know that that won' happen without some resistance and conflict.
I am still waiting for a positive post about anything relating to my country monsieur...
You must be part Haitian with your fantasies yet you have some sort of fixation on my person along with your Dominican girl papitaupa .
Again Dready ,nothing you say will remove the reality of you dislike for my country which is evident in this forum and none of your idiotic comments faze me because they simply aren't true and we both know it but if it makes you feel better go on ..you can even say that I am illiterate or whatever you wish but in the end you will still be anti-Dominican and I will still defend my country .
Planner ,Dread is not Dominican nor does he have anything positive to say about DR ..if you read his posts they are all negative which means he does not care about DR yet he spends an inordinate amount of time for someone who is not Dominican or at least cares about DR.
Dready,I am still waiting for those POSITIVE posts about DR ,I have seen plenty in defence of Haiti and Haitians but you seem to have trouble producing one that actually shows you care about DR and if you don't care and spend so much time here then we all know what your underlying motives are!
Good luck dready because no matter what you say I will be here because this is a site focused on MY country and I don't waste my time in Jamaican forums or Haitian forums simple because they do not matter to me .
I have to go now ,my boss is calling me to move some more shopping carts ....LOL!
Anyway dready let's see those LOVING posts about my country that speak in positives about anything regarding DR. I'm sorry I can't play but I truly have some productive things to do today but I thank you for putting a smile on my face this morning .
See you later...I know you will miss me very much!
Again ,this is cyberspace so you could say you are Colin Powell's son and there is no way to prove or disprove it just like your fantasies of me working moving shopping carts which you know is idiocy on your part but does not faze me one bit.
No matter what you say now ,you have proven to be 100% negative about my country and although you have managed to fool some of my compatriots I can see through your little farce.

As usual your opinion of your worth is grossly overinflated and please don't include me in your fantasies of hairy men Dready ,I have told you I don't go that way batty man.
And if it makes your insecure ego feel better you can imagine me doing all types of menial work ...you have my permission .I can consider it a gift to an senile and useless person .
See you later Dready!
