Santo Domingo.- President Leonel Fernandez and Canada Governor general Michaëlle Jean discussed to this Wednesday an attainable plan for Haiti’s reconstruction which involves Dominican civil society and the Haitian people.

“What’s good for Haiti is also good for the Dominican Republic,” the Canadian leader said in a press conference after the meeting.

Speaking in fluent Spanish, the Canadian official congratulated the Dominican Government’s quick response in the wake of the January 12 quake and stressed the continued collaboration. “We know that Haiti’s catastrophe offers the opportunity to bolster the bonds between Canada and Dominican Republic.”

Dominican Foreign Relations minister Carlos Morales accompanied Jean in the press conference in the National Palace, where she also stressed the bonds between Canada and Dominican Republic, and noted that the Caribbean region is of priority for her Government.

She said she was greatly moved upon seeing how Haiti’s civil society has been able to rise from the ruins and rebuild their cities amid debris.

I wonder what she'll do when her term is up.

I doubt she'd start an NGO in Haiti.

she will not do shit .
she is from the Haitian elite, they do not do shit for Haiti,

All they do in times of crisis is discuss realities, shake hands . take some pictures and tell the Haitian people :
Hasta la vista baby

The reality is Haitians are crossing into the Dominican Republic iin order to survive
Then she should tell Lionel : Ok Canada is going to allocate visas to about one million Haitians to come to live in Canada .
That would take a load off the DR 's back.
This the reality.
I wonder what others realities to be discussed.
Visas work, Bull shits talk !

Una historia de compassion, de amor y de esperanza por el futuro de Haiti y la RD

Sonia Marmolejas earns RD$1500 a month and has 5 children.
When she hears that there are orphan Haitian children at the Dario Comtreras taruma in Santo Domingo , as a woman as a mother, as a decent Dominican she feels she has to help.
She decides that she would go to the hospital and breast feed the Haitian children.
She lives in Barahona , 3 hours away from the hospital
Some rich , vain ,and powerful women fly around in their luxurious planes with their rich impotent husbands and talk mierdas and doing magic tricks, but some regular women find a way to help Haitians
Haitians need deeds not words.
Sonia Marmolejas makes me proud to be a Haitian Dominican
She exemplifies what a woman is supposed to be : Compassionate

From Statistics Canada:
Canadians of Haitian origin make up one of the largest non-European ethnic groups in Canada. In 2001, there were just over 82,000 people of Haitian origin living in Canada making them the 10th largest non-European community in the country, after Chinese, East Indian, Filipino, Jamaican, Vietnamese, Lebanese, Korean, Iranian and Japanese.

More Haitians have had their current visas extended since the earthquake and there will be more given, but don't forget, people from all over the world are trying to come to Canada, not just Haitians. :)

"Plan for Haiti’s reconstruction which involves Dominican civil society and the Haitian people," The DT mentions.

oooo

This DR "civil society" is the DR bourgeoisie and the so-called "Haitian people" are only the Haitian bourgeoisie. The term "involves" means that neither the DRs nor Haitians will run anything in Haiti, but they may be "involved," if US imperialist thieves throw scraps and crumbs at the DRs and Haitians.

"We know that Haiti’s catastrophe offers the opportunity to bolster the bonds between Canada and Dominican Republic,” Jean said. The make-up of "we" is clouded in bourgeois jargon. Here, Jean hints Canada may divide its aid. Part will go to UN to be looted by corrupt US imperialists, by imperial contractors and by imperial NGOs. Another part routed thur the DR-Haitian bourgeoisie, if the two local classes can get together.

Obama and the bourgeois media have already warned the world not to interfere with US capitalist looting of Haitian aid.

What surprises me is the fact that michaelle did not retun immediately to Haiti upon seing the progress made by the Dominicans to encourage the reckless, greedy adolescents who run Haiti to seek psychiatric treatment.

Only a pack of locos can team up to destroy their own country.

Whe she flew over the Haitian Dominican Border, did n't she see that the Haitian side of the island is brown (no trees) and the Dominican side is green(trees) and dark Green ( forests)
Didn't she see that on the Haitian side there no roads,no lights and on the Dominican side there are plenty of roads.
I can go on and on to show the striking contrast between the two countries.
Whay have Haitians being doing during the past 200 years since they became independant ?

Your comments, especially after etiennc01's praise for Dominican solidarity towards Haitians is very out of place and unnecessary.

allisonrmt,

You mention it yourself,

Canada has, as of 2001, 82,000 Haitians.

The Dominican Republic has nearly 2,000,000 Haitians, and South East Asians such as the Chinese and Vietnamese keep on coming as well,

Given the size of Canada and its population, 82,000 Haitians are simply a small spec. Given that Canada's French fore-fathers, who are decendants of those who allowed the mess in Haiti to be what is now, Canada is not doing enough.

Haiti1804... What i meant was, Why does Etienne want Canada to get the misery of the Haitian population... Look at what they do to their own country... Helping people leave the island only further aggravates the situation... What the haitians need is a large revolution like the French, not the Haitian, and they need to hang their elites and start helping themselves... Stop begging... Stop crying... I am sick of your plight... Is like bums ones meets on the subway... SICK OF IT!

On March 10, at the same time Jean and LF chatted, Obama bossed Preval in the White House.

Obama described his talks with Preval as "very productive."

The talks certainly were.

"Preval also said that hoped-for donor funds gathered at a United Nations conference in New York later this month should be administered by a single trust fund to ensure they were spent wisely," according to AFP
http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20100310/pl_afp/haitiquakeusobama

AFP tried to justify Preval's sellout with " given pervasive corruption in Haitian society," ignoring the pervasive corruption of pro-imperialists NGOs and contractors. AFP is an outlet of French bourgeois media, oldest news agency in the world, and one of the three largest after AP and Reuters.

This "single trust fund" for billions of UN money is all US imperialists need to steal 80%-90% of the money. The "single trust fund" is a hard blow for the DR and Haitian bourgeoisie which dreamed of getting a chunk of the UN money.

If LF were to offer major donors at the March 16-17 meeting in Santo Domingo a significant degree of oversight over how the DR uses donations for reconstruction contracts, LF may be able to undermine Obama's order ... which Preval on March 10 assented to ... that ALL donated funds from the UN ... now about $2.2 billion ... go through a "single trust fund" under US imperialist control.

Since corrupt US imperialists are plotting to steal 80% to 90% of the $2.2 billion, LF should have no illusions.

Filthy US imperialist will be enraged. And, their rage is nothing to ignore.

Plus, on the question of Haiti, pro-imperialist swine of either DR or Haitian or US origin will come down on LF and the DR bourgeoisie like a ton of bricks.

Officials of pro-imperialist NGOs jacked up their salaries in Haiti because mercenaries ... especially Blackwater USA scum ... whom the pro-imperialist NGO officials hired to guard NGO personnel were making more money than pro-imperialiast NGO officials.

The pro-imperialist NGO officials and the mercenaries are filthy swine.

The money to pay these lavish salaries to the imperial swine comes out of funds earmarked for Haitian humanitarian and reconstruction aid.

Haitian painter Philippe Dodard, 56, renown everywhere throughout the art world, is convinced that the Haitian artistic movement will recover.

Dodard said the Haitian people are strong, really enterprising, and will place art where it was before.

"I have great expectations that our artistic movement will recover its strength and variety and become again a paradigm in the Caribbean," said Dodard.

The earthquake destroyed almost totally the world largest collection of naïf samples, composed of around 15,000 works exhibited at Nader Galery Museum, a building that collapsed. Just around 400 of those oil paintings were rescued, while the rest are lost forever, including works by several of the country's greatest painters -- Philome Obin, Hector Hyfolite and Bernard Sejourne, among many others.

."We have lost many works by important artists and we will not have them ever again, but Haitian culture is not only buildings and art. It is also people."

The number of Haitians in Canada quoted above... is until 2006. Actually, they are mostly in Quebec (90% in Montreal) mostly because of language and in the Ottawa region. This does not take into consideration their children born here... because at least, they are given a legal national status to which all human being has a right to at birth and are considered as Canadians. Most of these Haitian-Canadians are very well educated and hold top jobs in professional, private or governmental fields as lawyers, doctors, engineers, etc....... Some will say... : They should be in Haiti, helping to rebuild "their" country... Yes... in some ways... They have their family here too. But I also witness on a daily basis what they do here to help raise funds and organize projects for Haiti. And NO..... Canada will not take a million Haitians!!! Sorry guys but Canada, despite its climate has requests more than the "quota" . Some cities (Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal) are close to 50%

canadafriend,

Spoken like a true Canadian Politician

"And NO..... Canada will not take a million Haitians!!!"

That's Dominican Republic's problem right?

I bet that if it had to be a million Jews from Europe the sentiment would be different.

Let me ask you canadafriend and allisonrmt:

Canada, with 9,984,670 sq km (2nd Largest Country in the World)
A population of 33,487,208 (which is perhaps of the lowest population to land ratios in the world) You can't take 1 Million Haitians? What in the world are you guys planning to do with all of this land?

Could you imagine the boost to the Canadian economy to have nearly 1mm working in factories, for minimum wage, with the hopes that the 2nd generations do become doctors, lawyers, etc?

canadafriend and allisonrmt

Look, the DR benefits from Haitian migration because of cheap labor, but is just too much for the DR to handle. Please remember the DR is only 48,670 sq km, and has a population (without including the nearly 2MM Haitians in DR) of about 10MM (1/3 of Canada) If we include the population in the Haitian side, which is another 10MM, this is 2/3 of the population in Canada)

The DR already has helped with nearly 2MM, and Canada can't take 1MM?

Lovinit,

And it's not like Canada need take all million, where are France, and the others who criticize the DR? Why don't they establish visa policies that would help not one million but 2 or 3 million Haitians leave Haiti for a much better future? France could easily take in 50 K per year.
