West Palm Beach, Florida.- Eleven Dominican boatpeople were detained Monday morning on the north end of Jupiter Island, news source palmbeachpost.com reports. It said the undocumented travelers told the authorities they wandered the beach after they were dropped off Sunday afternoon.
“The immigrants, all men, ranged in age from 20s to 40s, said Chief Ted Gonzales of the Jupiter Island police. They told authorities they traveled to Florida from the Dominican Republic by way of the Bahamas,” palbeachpost.com said.
It reports that 10 were spotted just before noon Monday, wandering in the sand north of Peck Lake in the St. Lucie Inlet Preserve State Park. The 11th swam across the Intracoastal Waterway and was found west of the canal.
The men told authorities they spent a day searching for a way across the Intracoastal, Gonzales said. “They were taken into federal custody and brought south for processing,” the news source said quoting Gonzales.
