Vatican City. – Pope Benedict XVI met today with Dominican Republic president Leonel Fernandez in the Vatican, where they analyzed the defense of human life in all phases and the summit for Haiti reconstruction’s which the Caribbean country will host.

The Pontiff  and Fernandez spoke for around 20 minutes, and after the encounter, the latter met with the Vatican State the Secretary, cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, and with archbishop Dominique Mamberti, minister of the exterior.

According to a statement by the Vatican the gatherings took place in "a climate of cordiality" and where as acknowledged “the Church’s great contribution for the country’s development, especially in education and health, paying particular attention to most needy."

“Also underscored was the importance of promoting human life, from conception to natural death," the statement adds.

Benedict and Fernandez analyzed "the commitment by the Dominican authorities to confront the social problems which afflict his country," as well as the international and regional situation. “In this regard the role of the Dominican Republic in the organization of the humanitarian aid in Haití has been demonstrated.”

Vatican sources said Fernandez informed the Pope on the decision to convene a world summit next June for Haiti’s reconstruction, in the aftermath of the January earthquake, and invited him to the Dominican Republic

It’s Fernandez’s second visit with a Pope in the Vatican, after the audience with John Paul II on January 18, 1999.

it must have been a very detailed analysis of the social problems to have taken only 20 minutes ,,but I am sure it included the need to put Viagra and la pela on the front shelves of stores and condoms out of view and the need to ex communicate anyone who mercifully assists any poor girl who has been raped by someone in her family by way of abortion .How out of touch with human life can a church be and for so long and with catholic church members dwindling and with an inability to attract priests, they still refuse to give proper pastoral care or decent education to their flock .

Great contribution? Where? What? To who? To education? Thanks for bringing us up to last place in worldwide primary education.
I see the hats these guys are buying and think that that is money that should be spent on the most needy.

All of that in 20 minutes? Must have been a little light on the details.

Surprised they didn't have time to analyze the baseball standings, discuss whether Pedro will pitch again this year, as well as discussing the weak European economy, and of course, many other very important issues. 20 minutes is a loooooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnng time.

This disgusts me. Two men discussing women's procreative choices.

The law in DR now -- as of last May -- is that EVEN IN CASE OF RAPE, you cannot get an abortion. Thank you f****** much, Fernandez, way to go!!

All those poor young girls getting molested or raped in the bateys, barrios, etc. where the poorest of the poor live, and they will have no recourse if they become pregnant out of forced rape or abuse. DISGUSTING.

juanb I am glad that we have one thing that we agree upon and that is the lack of contribution of the Roman Catholic church in the DR . maybe we could say a negative contribution .

Hate to sound like a BLANK BLANK but....
Regarding those young Girls molested and raped, I would ask wheres the Fathers, big brothers, uncles who would protect them in the first place ?
Where are the laws against RAPE and MOLESTRATION of Children, young Girls and Woman in general ? Wheres the enforcement ?
I have a Wife, Mother, Daughter, Granddaughters, Aunts and Female friends of whom I would defend and protect.

Danny00,
That's real sick, I would'nt know about that in the first place......F--- THE DEVIL.....ANY FATHER WHO WOULD LOOK TO HIS DAUGHTER OR CHILDREN AS A SEX THRILL/OBJECT OR ALLOW ANY BODY FAMILY OR FRIEND TO CAUSE HARM TO THEIR CHILDREN SHOULD BE SHOT ON SIGHT.

Real FATHERS are suppost to be head of the Family and sole protectors of their Children.

GOD save the Families.
