SANTO DOMINGO. - Immigration director Sigfrido Pared said Sunday that the agency has begun the remodeling of at least eight houses in the Haina Vocational Center to temporarily shelter undocumented Haitian children who wander the capital’s streets.
He said the work to locate and gather those children will be done in coordination with the Children’s Council (CONANI) and the United Nations International Children’s Fund (UNICEF), since the objective is to respect their rights, as well as guaranteeing a good treatment for them.
The official said from the start Immigration authorities warned of the increase of Haitian children not only in the streets of the National District and Santo Domingo province, but in other cities such as Santiago, though the main problem was where to shelter and feed them.
Interviewed by Manuel Jimenez on Coral 39 on Sunday, Pared said the children will be kept in the shelters fro around one week receiving attendance by psychologists and other professionals while their parents are is located in Dominican Republic or Haiti, prior to their repatriation.
He confirmed the widespread belief that organized groups of Dominicans and Haitians traffic with those children by placing them in the capital’s busy street corners to beg.

Great!
now let's hope talks finish and actions start, and if the government is going to build the shelters, the Haitian gov't, UNICEF, UN or what ever organization should help us pay the costs of food and shelter maintenance since those kids aren't our sole responsibility. We aren't a wealthy country like the U.S or Spain, we can't afford to "act like one".

They should follow the incredible model thats being used to take care of the Dominican people that are suffering as thier guide . Ayayayay.
This is a tragic and growing epedemic in the D.R that has no solution in sight . I will never forget when I was in Higuey 2 years ago and saw 3 Haitian boys no more than 10 years old sleeping on a card board box together on a store front sidewalk . Que pena !
Since the quake ,the streets of Sosua are slowly but surely becoming a refugee for homeless Haitian children but brick one has yet to be laid for the first orphanage. The government and the capitalist business owners are only concerned about the negative effects this is having on tourism . They are content to let these ''undesirable'' nuisances die of starvation so long as poppi from Canada has a comfortable bar stool , a cold beer and a cheap young prostitute under his arm.

Undocumented "Haitian" children...???
Many, if not most, are born in DR... They didn't all come since the quake! (Hello!!!)
Probably, many of their parents were also born in DR...
Maybe even their grand-parents were born in DR.... working in the sugar cane fields.......
But because of the law, these innocent children are considered as "undocumented Haitians" because their parents and grand-parents were undocumented, even if they were born in DR. You cannot "document" a child is you, yourself is undocumented.
They cannot have Haitian citizenship, because they were not born there.
They have no citizenship even if it is one of the most basic Human rights to have a citizenship.
I can imagine the reaction of some living in USA if they were told that their child, born there, could not be a US citizen because the parents were not yet fully recognized US citizens.....

Very Sad situation, here is the irony in all this. The only place in Haiti were you see children of the streets is Port-au-Prince in certain key areas like you see them in many third world countries, capitals, specially in Latin America. yet this is not as bad as it seems to be in DR. It seems like someone have watched too much Slum Dog Millionaire and these kids are being brought in as a new business(street beggars INC). I doubt they just decided on their own hey lets head out to DR, after all contrary to what others may think the reason the border is so pourious is due to corruption on both side. The average border guard in DR is not there to protect the border, but to used his position to get his pound of flesh out of the daily activities. I'm not sure of their wage but in America a border Patrol agent and custom officer is paid in the neighborhood of 75k per year.

You can't just dump them into the middle of nowhere in Haiti, their deportation would have to be well-planned and these kids should be left in some shelter on the other side of the border.

dominicanheartbeat,
You raise some very good points regarding the plight of the Haitian street children in the D.R. and what can be done to help them escape their misery.
I was in Sosua this January when the earthquake struck Haiti. I remember the days immediately following the earthquake when Domincans, Haitians and tourists came together to help raise money for the earthquake victims: Haitian women in the streets were beading tourists hair in exchange for donations. Dominicans were going round to businesses in town to collect donations from employees - they were giving 50 or 100 pesos, whatever they could afford.
It was truly a wonderful thing to experience. After witnessing that, I feel that there is great hope that the Dominican Republic, Haiti, and the international community can work together to help Haiti get on it's feet.
