Santo Domingo.- Immigration director Sigfrido Pared affirmed Tuesday that the number of Haitians currently in the country illegally increased 15 percent to around one million, attributing it the jump to the quake which devastated that nation.
He said before the catastrophe there were no more than around 800,000 illegal Haitian immigrants in the Dominican Republic. “To say the Haitian presence in Dominican Republic hasn’t increased after the quake is to cover the sun with a finger. It has increased, however Immigration, the Border Guards and the Army work to keep people from taking advantage to smuggle more into the country.”
Interviewed on Telemicro Channel 5, the official said many Haitian nationals who try to enter Dominican territory illegally have been caught returned to their country.
“What isn’t being done are the repatriations of people who’ve already settled down in Dominican Republic although illegally, until conditions in the Republic of Haiti become just a bit more encouraging.”

I think this story is complete rubbish ,,,there are only token gestures to send the illegal people back to Haiti ..we have read here about the problems with illegals in Santiago and Sosua and I have seen for my self many illegal people seeking work and if you walk along Conde , the street is awash with Haitians . We used to have searches of cars on the autopisto sa the police looked for people without identification but not now and there are no checks on construction sites as far as I can see .

No one is saying that Haitian should not enter DR but immigration control is needed at the border even to catch the bad guys coming in from South America... DR gov is broken, they do so much to see who comes in and out via the airport but they leave the border wide open...
Also, border wall will not be the answer. They need border wall plus 24/7 guards, I am afraid that if they build a wall they would leave it alone and the people will just dig tunnels... DR will never be 1st world until they are able to control immigration.
They have to send some of the people back. It has gotten out of control and the Haitian with skills learned in DR need to go back and help rebuild!

It just happened that I visited the DR many times, and I have Dominicans , and Haitians friends.
I talk with both of them , but it's really sad to see this hatred.

Now let me tell you something. They call me El Profe because I am an English teacher and some of my best students are Haitians and they don't like their own people.
When the earthquake hit Haiti, not a single one went home to help or check on their own families.
Me on the other hand made a few phone calls to friends in the USA, Santiago and my local community and in two days we had a Large truck full of purified water and we took off to Haiti to help the people in need.
Once we crossed the border and we were on our way to port of prince we got stopped and our life was in great danger. So we dumped our load right then and there and hulled ass back to the Dominican Republic.
The next day we heard that two Dominicans were hospitalized in critical condition due to a hold up in port of prince.
Now you can see why I have a chip on my shoulder.

It just happened that I visited the DR many times, and I have Dominicans , and Haitians friends.
I talk with both of them , but it's really sad to see this hatred.
I am not in that colour facism, because I am only interested in discovering cultures and good human beings. My best friend in Cuba happens to be white , and he is a good man.
In the DR I have friends of all colors , morenos/as, mulatos/as and whites dominicans. And I have many haitian friends who are hardworking men.

When the earthquake hit Haiti, not a single one went home to help or check on their own families.
Me on the other hand made a few phone calls to friends in the USA, Santiago and my local community and in two days we had a Large truck full of purified water and we took off to Haiti to help the people in need.
Once we crossed the border and we were on our way to port of prince we got stopped and our life was in great danger. So we dumped our load right then and there and hulled ass back to the Dominican Republic.
The next day we heard that two Dominicans were hospitalized in critical condition due to a hold up in port of prince.
Now you can see why I have a chip on my shoulder.

Because I'm not resident in the DR nor do I have any family in this country ( or haiti), I wouldn't deny what your saying about Haitians. But is it that majority ( rapers, killers, thieves etc) who mainly lives in the DR ?
Talking about me I don't mingle with that kind of people, so I don't know personally any dominican or haitian who rapes, or kills.
