Port-au-Prince.– Six months after Haiti was struck by a catastrophic 7.0-magnitude
earthquake, questions are being raised about how the hundreds of
millions of dollars in aid money is being directed.
Many Canadians gave generously following the Jan. 12 quake, which
killed more than 200,000 people and devastated the Caribbean country's
capital.
The Canadian Red Cross alone raised some $200 million, while the
federal government has pledged $600 million for reconstruction efforts. But many aid workers who have recently visited Haiti say there is
little sign of progress.

WHAT A SHAME !
Millions and millions donated and spent.......on what ?
Something tells me they should push the UN, LF and the Haitian government aside and conduct a complete audit on all moneys donated for accountability then let the private sector take over.
Sounds like another classic example of benefiting from the needs of a People and Nation for the greedy few...
Simple...... the Canadian red cross should press the UN to check out all foreign bank deposits since 1-12-10.

What happened to the mythology of haitians been such a hard working bunch.?
If the canadians want results they going to have to go downthere and start removing some rubble themsevels, no es un secreto que a nuestros vecinos le gusta mucho que le hechen la comida en la boquita y despues que se la hechen que le muevan la quija.

This is a serious subject and I see in the BBC news that the appeal for money ends at the end of tis month ,,money from the private funds has only gone to providing temporary relief and not to a lasting solution. Yes ,,it would be good to see the results of an audit of money promised and money actually given .

This is terrible news for Haiti and the DR will be adversely affected if this trend continues. The International Community needs to step it up and get Haitians working on debris removal, and other important tasks. What a shame!

I totally agree.....maybe the past donated money should and always have gone towards self-dependentcy from the get go, but then again its all about DEPENDENCY / CONTROL .......no matter if its a natural or man made tragedy / war........is it any wonder why things never change ?

It is now coming out that very few countries lived up to their pledges. Probably rightly so as the money was given to the Haitian government who in turn pissed it away as usual.

Yes after 6months work is barely began yes the hurricane season is upon us,but what everbody in the ready mix and instant gratification circle felt to realized the logistical issues for reconstruction alone is a nightmare that have to be work out. The removal work at the national palace alone had to be stopped because Haiti does not have enough scaffold to continue.Shit got to be brought in,So does most of the heavy equipments needed for debris removal, never mind the bureaucracy of int'l aid coordination. let alone urban planing studies that need to be done. The Haitian government does not have access to these fund its with the world bank and Bubba our new ViceRoy have to ok any allocation of funds not Preval. On the private sectorside the Oasis is moving alone with reconstruction they were able to secure a 20mil USD loan part of a special fund set up to help the business sector rebuilt. The Montana Hotel just finish remove of debris from their site.

and reconstruction is about to begin on that project also. While the poor and the wealthy are getting help I hope the middle class is not forgotten, those that have work hard whether in Haiti or abroad to build a home or a small business, the doctors lawyers civil servants and small entrepreneurs you do not see these people in the tent cities, but if you drive in some of the neighborhoods such as Delmas you will find them in a tent, or living in their car on their property which also have been destroyed, most of these people have invested everything in their home and does not have a mortgage so 9 out 10 times insurance was not a thought ,yes they may only be about 20 to 30% of the population, but Haiti does not need another brain drain.

The Canadians should think outside the box. They expect progress in Haiti under a umbrella of Canadian/North American of sense of values and progress. They need to remove themselves from that wrapper and draw themselves to understand and work with Haitian values. The fact is the Haitian infrastructure before the quake and definitely now is in total shambles. So don't expect the country to be rebuilt in a day. The Canadians have a right to know what is happening with the aid money but they also need to understand Haiti is not Canada.

You people are forgetting that haiti's government is like frickin horrible!
From: Canada
If one country understands how things work in Haiti, it's Canada. Billions were poured in and after the quake, so much was collected from simple citizens at a time of recession. The Red Cross is only one example. Many charitable organizations had almost as much. Of course, the problems in Haiti will not be solved overnight. However, people have the right to know that the money 1) is in "good" hands and 2) that something is being done for those who need it the most. Who will give again so generously if something else happens?

Patdiamond,
Good points. But the issue is that more needs to be done and now! The urgency does not appear to be there, and we are in the mist of Hurricane season and God help us if they strike Haiti in her weakened state.

I thought the progress report from PatDiamond was not worth any minuses ,,I am sure that he has a valid point that the poorer people in Haiti are not the first that are being helped
From: Dominican Republic, vieja Santo Domingo
The BBC TV has been showing a great report on Haiti..some of the points made were...
1 Over $50 billion was pledged and only a small amount has been received
2 The money has been used to stop diseases, provide essential water and health and tents
3 The capital remains in ruins with little progress on cleaning up all the rubble and it is estimated that it will take more than 20 years before real progress can be seen
4 Elections are planned for November and are being stage managed by the Haitian elite
5 More than 75% of adults are without work
6 There is a strong feeling among the people , not the elite, that there is vacuum in leadership
7 The chances of a popular uprising are much stronger than before as the population can see no light at the end of the tunnel
It was an independent report without any political bias and worth seeing ..probably will be repeated.

I'm sure she can do a lot more with that money than buying Don perignon for her friends.
