Santo Domingo.- The director of the Government’s Essential Medicine Program (PROMESE) today announced the start in the next few days of two programs to benefit people affected by diabetes and blindness, as part of the expansion of services to the population.

Dr. Elena Fernandez said people who suffer from diabetes and who aren’t affiliated to a Health Risk Administrator will benefit from the program Promedia, available in the Read Cabral and Eduardo Aybar hospitals. “This program’s objective is to keep diabetes from aggravating the health of people of low income, offering medicines and equipment to be supplied completely free.”

The official, interviewed on Diario de la Mañana, said the other program to be implemented aims to prevent blindness, in which a considerable number of ophthalmologists will take part by providing their services in the hospitals Eduardo Aybar and Los Alcarrizos.

“It’s not acceptable that a person becomes blind for not having the resources to buy drops which prevent that disease. Promese will provide them free to those who need them we will sell and them at a minimum price in its 1186 Pharmacies of the People which operate nationwide,” she said.

It always amazes me that not many Dominicans know anything about healthy eating and especially the risks of contracting diabetes in this country. When I try to explain the problems with eating too much sugar and white rice and also too much salt , they simply do not understand .I have tried on numerous occasions to have nice salads when my Dominican friends come for lunch or dinner but the salads attract minimum interest , There has to a diabetes awareness programme ,,,diabetes kills far more here than AIDS

Ricardo,

It's the lack of education. Most Dominicans don't know any better until a Doctor tells them so.

But I will say this. I think that most Dominicans eat healthier in the DR than most Americans in the USA.

YES I think that is correct ..it is junk food there against sugar and white rice here ..I also get so angry with my Dominican friends and their families when they take too long to seek medical help ..simple problems become difficult problems just because they do not have any basic education in health ..again I must say that there has to be an education programme .
