The visit by the Fida delegation.
Santo Domingo.- The Government will receive US$61 million as part of a grant by the UN International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), to spur food production programs in farms especially in the eastern and central provinces and the region along the border with Haiti.
An IFAD delegation made the announcement yesterday during a visit with vice president Rafael Alburquerque in the National Palace.
The funds will be provided in two disbursements, for the same number of programs, the first to develop agriculture in the 11 border provinces and the second in the other parts of the country.
US$30 million will be spent in the first part of the program and the rest will be designated for the second phase.
The delegation included IFAD president Kanayo F. Nwanze, IFAD Latin America director Josefina Stubbs, and program mánager Marco Camasi, accompanied by Agriculture minister Salvador Jiménez.

I do like my money that I pay in taxes given to worthy projects ,,I work not to solely enrich myself but to enrich others , but I see that there are some who follow a creed well founded in the DR of caring nothing for others ..just oneself.

Why don't people in the DR just RISE UP? Why don't they storm the PALACIO??? Dominicans have no real role models anymore, there are no Salome Urenas anymore or Mirabals.
Dominicans need to overcome their fear and SPEAK OUT. Although I'm seeing a lot of activity with the University students in recent months............

Mariposa,
"DR just rise up" ......."storm the Palacio" careful how one says that.
I'm reminded of many such actions in the past like Cuba, San Salvador etc..etc.. which always results in mass loss of innocent lives.
Sudden radical change brings the worst out of people even those with good intentions, socialist revolutionist feed and gain power with the call for social justice mixed with anger, lawlessness, hopelessness and mass public discontent with the idea of overall radical collective change is the only answer.
The struggle justifies the cause, the wants and needs justifies the their actions result.....the end justifies the means which can only usher the call for a one leader type thus enters the DICKtaker.
I believe the FREEDOM OF THE PRESS / FREEDOM OF SPEECH / FREEDOM OF LAWFUL ASSEMBLY is in reality a socialist worst enemy.
Those freedoms just mentioned controled by the the socialist equal's a point of no return.

It's probably going to be genetically modified agricultural help or the "franken foods" I don't have proof but these giant "Agri-businesses" do not do anything but GM. Please go to Google Video and type in "World According to Monsanto". Very eye opening documentary

Sorry, but "taking it to the streets" is the most visible and effective way to deal with this.
"The world will be watching", as they say. If the demonstrations are peaceful, there is no need to fear the loss of life, and nothing is gained by moaning and complaining while sitting in your rocking chair!

What do you mean "grow up"?????
Of course the U.S. backs DR, it is their "insurance" against the "communists".....a very old and tired story.
What I am reading from your post is that the PUEBLO should just keep taking up the a** and keep their mouths shut, and continue to vote for whoever gives them the largest sack of rice......talk about "growing up"! sheesh.

FREEDOM IS NOT FREE.
Rumors have it that when Prez. Nixon was leaving China on that historic visit Moa's last words to Nixon were "we may not defeat you on the battle field, but we will defeat you from within".
History repeating its self or by intentional means.....special thanks to Prez. "0" and all his advisors from the radical 1960's, in closing......how much money I.O.U's does the U.S have on China ?

What the heck are you blabbing about? Of course, I know that. I meant the U.S. in general, not the specific President.
Look, I am of Dominican descent. My parents were activists...as was my grandmother. I was able to visit the country for the very first time the summer of 1961, after Trujillo was killed. My mother, my sister and I could not enter the country before that time. I feel strongly for DR, I love it, I love the people (especially the poor), my husband (who doesn't speak English) and I work actively in a small village of only 23 families in Monte Plata, when we visit ......we enjoy a beach apt. in Juan Dolio and spend 4 months a year in DR.
That being said, I STILL FEEL THE PEOPLE SHOULD RISE UP.

Mariposa,
I respectfully would say that Communism has nothing to do with the goings on in the Caribbean Basin these days; yes, in the 1960s and 1970s very much so, but not today. I don't know if you're aware that as of 1989 or so, Communism has been in terminal health, and dying patients-nations-left in its wake. The hold-outs, Cuba, North Korea are all suffering from the terminal disease, and would likely die outright but for certain funding sources, namely Chavez for Cuba, and China for the North Koreans. And by the way, China is Communist in name only, you either work or die under their "new system." No more "Iron Bowl" and "free medical care." Pay or die.
As for the DR, Leonel is the most competent President DR has had in living memory. Juan Bosch's disciple has done what Bosch should have done but for lack of clearer vision and his misadventures with leftist ideals. to increase DR's exposure and incorporation within the enormous US led world community of nations. Leonel wants pragmatic results for his nation not some pie in the sky idealistic driven train wreck like Chavez, the Castro brothers and others. In the early 1950s and 1960s, Taiwan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Singapore, were poor and struggling nations and city-states. Today, these nations have reached desirable levels of modernization and social progress undreamed by even their most optimistic supporters, that's what Leonel's program seeks to advance in the DR.
