SANTO DOMINGO.- Extreme poverty fell from 10.4% to 9.6%, or 0.8 percentage points from April 2009 to April 2010, according to the study Evolution and determinants of monetary poverty in the Dominican Republic: update April 2010.
From April 2009 to April 2010 the population in conditions of extreme poverty declined from 1,003.980 to 935,000, with around 65,000 people having overcome extreme poverty in the last 12 months.
The report conducted by the Economy Ministry’s senior Poverty Analyst Antonio Morillo Perez is based on the World Bank’s poverty measurement methodology.
The analysis of the decomposition and change in poverty levels in its components of growth, distribution and income found a fall of 0.3 percentage points in the generally poor population from April 2009 to April 2010, mainly in the level of real family income growth, which countered the slight increase in the inequality of income during that period.
Also found was a fall of 0.8 points in the extreme poverty in that period, as a result of the real income growth which compensated the negative impact in the deteriorating income distribution on poverty extreme," the report said.
The study said the country’s poorest regions are El Valley 58.2%, Enriquillo 51.6%: the Northwest 50.0%; the National District 23.1%; North-central 29.6% and Central Cibao 33.4%.
As to the provinces the study found that the five poorest in 2009 were Elías Piña 69.7%; Baoruco 63.0%; Pedernales 60.4%; Azua 56.4% and Independencia 54.9%, whereas the five least poor were the National District 16.8%; Santo Domingo 25.3%; Santiago 27.5%; Altagracia 28.2% and Puerto Plata 30.3%.

The illegals still have to be included because they are living in DR and this is related to poverty in DR not by race.

All this means is that the very poor can now afford 3 eggs per week instead of the two they subsisted on before.

Not so. "In Germany, a Broad Recovery Is Under Way

"German exports are booming again and so is employment. The country’s unemployment rate is 7.6 percent, almost at the pre-crisis level, and down from 9.1 percent in January. Companies, including the electronics and engineering giant Siemens, the truck maker MAN or the carmaker Daimler, are ramping up worker hours. BMW said it was seeking 1,000 people in Germany to work in research and development as well as purchasing and sales."
"Toyota Posts $2.2 Billion Quarterly Profit

TOKYO — Toyota said Wednesday it roared to a net profit of 190.4 billion yen, or $2.2. billion, in the April-June quarter, as sales in emerging markets and aggressive cost-cutting offset a strong Japanese currency and the lingering effects of recalls on North American and European sales."

Ilegals are not counted in any census regardless of the country. They are only counted when governments want to know how many illegals live within their borders.

Exactly... This means that the whole population illegal+nonillegal residents has a greater number in extreme poverty.

Atabey- You have not answer my question in regards to all the economic good news coming out of DR.
Germany is the largest economy out of Europe.the forth largest in the world, It is Germany who decides the faith of the euro, why you think the German were mad as hell for having to bail out Greece. The reality is the euro is a replacement of the German Marks sense they economy is what really matter in the Zone.
Japan been in a deflationary Period for the last decade hence their reference to it as the lost decade which is why Mitsubishi AKA the bank of Japan been keeping interest rate at zero for so long. They have not yet recover from the 90's
So that you know the sales in emerging market Toyota is referring to is mainly from China, they are the ones with purchasing power at the moment, even in the luxury good sector. Your neighborhood BMW sales manager can tell you all about it he has access to their sales data.

In the census of all developing countries, everyone is counted including the undocumented. Well, every effort is made to count everyone. Did the study indicate how many individuals live at or below the poverty level? Is there job creation from an increase in tourism?

Everyone keep talking about Haitians. Its Dominicans who are the subject of th poverty study. Nothing in the report makes any mention of Haitians. In any event, there is no doubt in my mind that there are more Dominicans who are living in extreme poverty in the D.R. than Haitians. Why? because there are more Dominicans in the country and the D.R. is poor country. There has been progress over the years, but it is still a ways to go and it is still a poor country. This is not because of haitians. There are thousands of dominicans who live in close proximity to haitians and who are dirt poor.
From: United States
the poor haitians moved to dr for opportunity while the poor dominicans move to puerto rico for opportunity.. at this point how do you know if someone is really haitiaN or dominican living in dr i never been to neither countries but the ones up here looks the same to me sometimes and im assuming the haitian that live in dr speak fluent spanish with the dominican accent.
