Washington.– Actor Sean Penn said musician Wyclef Jean is unfit to become Haitii's next president and accused the singer of abandoning the country in their time of need and misappropriating charity funds.

During an interview with CNN's Wolf Blitzer, Penn, who has been living in earthquake ravaged Port-au-Prince for a few months, said, "This is somebody who's going to receive an enormous amount of support from the United States, and I have to say I'm very suspicious of it, simply because he, as an ambassador at large, has been virtually silent. For those of us in Haiti, he has been a non-presence."

Penn, who has been a constant source of support and supplies for victims in the wake of a 7.0 earthquake, said Jean has been a "non-presence" within Haiti and accused the performer of misappropriating over $400,000 donated to the Yele Haiti Foundation for quake survivors.

Seans observations about Wyclef does hold some merit. Many in the U.S don't support Sean's pro socialistic views......

I wonder how much material aide Sean has given to Haiti which may have a political sway in the upcoming Haiti elections ?

I hope this doesn't turn out to be just another Political tug-a-war at the expense of the Haitian People and the future of Haiti.

LOL maybe Sean should run for Prez. I'm sure he'll get lots of support from his Tio Hugo-a-go-go.

The wise thing for Sean Penn to do is to remain quite and neutral as to his political leanings and focus on assisting the victims of the earthquake. He has done a good job so far.

if Sean Penn is stating this there must be some truth to it. It's known that he has spent several months in Haiti helping out the victims. So he must have first hand knowledge as well as opinion from the real sources, remember the best way to manage a crisis is to have fist hand experience then you can make some strategic goals for the future. I think Wycleff wants to help but we all know he has spent most of his time in the US. remember you've got to be in it to win it!! What Haiti needs right now is a leader who will take charge of the situation at hand. Changing the constitution is the right thing but know is not the time. For the next 10 years what's important is to see the aid and funds coming in are being well spent. If you try to do too many things at once, some will be forgotten I say rebuild and then reform once there is order.

I wonder what needy cause Sean came to the rescue prior to the Haitian earthquake being Venezuela does not count.

Jcl_67,
I'm lost here, please help.....did Sean spend several months in Haiti playing doctor, feeding the hungry, helping build homes, teaching survival skills or living and eating among the Haitians to get that down to earth feeling of whats going on in Haiti or just come around to take photos and give out autographs like most with the "Hey man look at me".

Please enlighten us here on DT.

yo riosm,

Here is the link so you can read for yourself before you go out speaking on what you don't know.
He gave up a role on his next film to give support to the Haitian people, something I don't see others doing. He is also running a camp for 50,000 survivors of the earthquake called "Camp Penn" I seriously don't think Sean Penn needs the publicity the guy has a lot of under his belt as far as acting is concerned. Maybe he reached a point in his life where he has realized that money doesn't make you happy but instead when you give and make someone else who is less fortunate happy, is what counts and what fills you with joy and satisfaction

http://www.vanityfair.com/online/....-with-sean-penn-humanitarian.html

Simple things go a long way riosm, you can donate clothes, send food, or maybe even write a check to red cross for Haiti. So I hope I've enlightened you and maybe even hear that you made a contribution to the crisis in Haiti.

The U.S. military, it turns out, are among Penn’s strongest supporters. “My politics are not in line with Sean Penn’s,” states Major General Simeon Trombitas, a frequent guest at J/P HRO compound. “But we are allied in trying to save lives and alleviate human suffering. He is a doer and not a talker...and I respect that immensely.” Lieutenant General P. K. Keen, deputy commander of the U.S. Southern Command, concurs: “In a humanitarian crisis you can be a neutral—always pinching your knuckles white. Or you can operate an NGO the way Mr. Penn does.… He intuitively knew how to both work with the U.N. and break its bureaucracy down.... I applaud the leadership he has shown. He doesn’t have to do this.”

Says Penn of Keen, recalling a recent ceremony at which the general bestowed several commendations on Penn for his Haitian crisis work: “Keen gave me this look in the eye—a look of pride. It meant more to me than any movie award.”

Hellborn,
I'm not and will never be a fan of Sean, let's give credit where credit is due.
I will never never agree with Sean's socialist views, what really struck me odd was those pictures and video that were taken with the 3 star general in all the look on Seans face is one of hate and distrust with the I'm better then you look what I'm doing on his face which I'm sure Seans Tio Hugo-a-go-go is thrilled.
Leaves one to wondering.
1. If Sean's so well loved in Haiti then why pack a GLOCK ?
2. What will be Sean's socialistic inprint on those he's serving ?
3. Why did sean pick that perticulor area, one of many hard hit areas, near a private country club ?
4. Prior to the Venezuelian visit wheres Sean's track record helping the needy ?
5. Why did sean name it CAMP PENN is he trying to make a political statement or a name for himself ?
6. That taped video was 100% Sean giving orders showing he's in charge and in control.

Riosm,

obviously, the thugs and ganglords would rather kidnap SP for all he's got if given half a chance, so I understand the Glock part.

As to his real motivations, who knows: man's motor runs on love (sex), money and glory. He's already got all three, so maybe he's for real and finds higher moral gratifications. Or maybe only love without sex.

Walterpolo,
Good point made, but may I add.

I just have a akward feeling about SP's motives, to me it looks like one big massive social experimental model program to me.

Haiti has had needs pre earthquake needs only now 10X, it's like as if to show the world the idea of giving to the 'now cause' thus becoming a dependent Haiti not self dependent.

I would like to see the future plans of an Haiti where self ruled, reliant and dependent if any, the problem as I see it is giving, giving and more giving equals dependentcy with a justified cause.

The media is great on showing only what they want you to see and hear.

I'm reminded of the old saying again.....

"Give a man fish he eats for a day thus becoming DEPENDENT, teach a man to fish he then becomes SELF DEPENDENT".

I only wish the best for Haitian People after all we do share the same Island, what effects one effects us all in the long run, only time will tell where motives become clear.

At first I assume this was simply a publicity stunt, but it turn out Clef is the presidential candidate for the political party of the ex- president of the Haitian lower house of parliament. A very Machiavellian choice for this click, Sad for Haiti. Funny Mr Erick Jean Jacques could not have the balls to bring him self as the candidate of his party for he knows full well the mass would never votes for him or his like, when his son tried to run for Mayor of Petion-Ville not even those that drink with him at his political head quarter voted for him. Sad because if this clown can over come all the constitutional hurdles and run, due to his stardom which will eclipse the more serious candidates he can win and heaven help us . This guy could not even run a TV station (Telemax) which he bought in Haiti five years ago let alone the country.

Haitian presidential candidate owes for 1040 returns

Wyclef Jean, who appears ready to announce his candidacy for Haiti’s presidency, owes the Internal Revenue Service more than $2.1 million, according to federal tax liens filed against the musician,
n May, the IRS filed a $724,332 tax lien against Jean. Last July, the agency filed a $599,167 lien against the performer. And a $792,269 lien was lodged against Jean in July 2007. Wyclef Jean....? Well, with all respect if some of you are from California... Everybody thought it was a joke when Schwarzengger went into poitics!!!
However, with 37 candidates, the problem is major. Nobody will get a true LEADERSHIP majority.
I may be dreaming a vision... If elections become a total chaos with no obvious majority leadership, there may be a request for an "international government" supervision led by Mrs. Michaelle Jean (former Governor General of Canada), just named at UN.

I think at this particular time in the history of Haiti , they need a good professional administrator and not an actor, a singer or a failed politician ..someone who has been involved with administration of large scale civil projects and with dealing with regulations and constitutions and conflicting points of view . Further down the track Haiti can go in for a more colourful approach but now is not the time .
As it is possible that no professional is willing to take over the post , I would prefer that Haiti accept a proven administrator appointed by the UN or by donor nations for a period of 5 years . I think the world would have confidence in that .

First let me welcome to DT, I'm sure I speak for many.

There will always be people who will take advantege of situations and pocket monies raised for any cause, your best bet is to go direct the American red cross.

The Haitians must vote who they believe is the best choice for president not advice from outsiders. On my secound to last post I listed qualitys of what I believe would make a perfect Haitian leader.

IN MY OPINION SP should of helped orginizations already established in Haiti prior to the quake then reinvent the wheel with his own personal political twist.

Not to judge for who am I........I have more respect for a man with little who donates heart and soul with a Humanitarian spirit then a man with fame, riches and popularity who donates for the mier blurred self image of himself. I'll let the seekers of truth decide on that one.

Take care.

The American red cross goes way back and has been assisting nations from both man and nature made catastrophes.
Again from what I know about SP one has to question whats his hidden agenda, It seems to me he's just trying to prove a point as if to make a political statement.
Long term or a hit 'n' run, only time will tell lets all hope the people of Haiti benefit not just for the now, but benefit and prosper for the long term to avoid a repeat of pre quake Haiti.

Hello again! I agree 100% with Sean Penn. This guy , The Singer, would do nothing but worsen the conditions of such suffering nation. What this country needs is a reliable candidate ( Though they all promise and promise but do nothing then). I just call it Oportunism. I don't know anything about this singer. I've never heard of him, here in Europe but I'd suggest to him to carry on with his music and, if he wants to do sth for his country, just finance the construction of a school, hospital or anything that could help ease the future of these people. Haitians are hardworking people so invest or give sth away ( the Singer) in the country to keep them going, without having to migrate to Dominican Rep. where most them adquire but influence from booming Dominicana compare with Haiti, of course. Hasta luego paisanos.
