Washington. - Several international experts on Friday recommended a three-way pact between the United States, Dominican Republic and Haiti, to advance the reconstruction and development of the hemisphere’s poorest nation, much of whose capital was destroyed by the January 12 quake.

They also noted that the international community as well as the Dominican Republic has obligations with Haiti’s reconstruction, stressing that Haiti’s development also opens an opportunity for Dominican Republic to continue growing.

The economist Frederic Emam-Zade, the historian Frank Moya Pons and Haiti Industry and Commerce Chamber president Reginald Boulos hosted the panel: “Dominican Republic’s Role in Haiti’s Reconstruction,” organized by the American Chamber of Commerce in the Dominican Republic, as part of the calendar of events being developed by the 18th Dominican Week in the United States.

"Frank Moya Pons" is an expert in rebuilding Haiti?

Then there is this tidbit: "They also noted that the international community as well as the Dominican Republic has obligations with Haiti’s reconstruction,"

No we don't. Nobody has an obligation to rebuild Haiti except the Haitians.

What a bunch of arrogant A*sholes.

He is a mediocre writer but who cares?

Shakespeare was a good writer. Would that have made him an expert on rebuilding Haiti?

AC,

This is an issue that DR can not ignore because one way or the other DR is on the receiving end. It might be great to think that DR is immune from the tragedy that is Haiti. Sadly and unmistakeably , the recent earthquake of 12 January gave everyone a defining "NO" to that way of thinking. Presidents from Carter to the current Obama have given Leonel and the other DR representatives THEIR take on the matter, and it involves some heavy lifting on our side of the island. And this show of maturity on the part of the DR will have positive outcomes for the DR by way of additional investments from the US and several of its allies around the world. If DR is to facilitate this resuscitation of Haiti, why not be pro-active and try to help guide the discourse on the issue? If intellectuals and others don't bother to try their hand it will be decided by others, and probably in ways not as beneficial to the DR. This issue presents DR with an opportunity, let's hope we don't mess it up

Example:

Washington

Atabey,

Do you really want the Dominican Government having a say in the economic rebuilding of Haiti?

Or better asked.....

Do you want a continuation of the corrupt, inefficient, populist, patronage system in Haiti?

AC,
My point is that we have no real say, the facts, history and the Big Boys are pushing this forward. We could resist, but it will be at our peril. If we resist, they will push back real hard making our lives much worse than if we cooperate in the process. I know some would say that this is selling out the nation. The nation was sold many decades before. We need leaders who can manipulate things in ways that will prove less taxing on the DR over the long haul. Perhaps this will not happen. But if we leave it to outsiders to devise the schemes and have little input on the matter, if we try to cold-shoulder this process, we'll end up in worse position than if we try to guide the process along. If, for instance, a secret deal was made to have DR show restraint on deportation of Haitians, than perhaps insisting in a future re-repatriation of the flows, would combined with financial assistance merit consideration on the DR side. It's all about dealing and getting something back

Atabey,

If the moochers and looter were shown the door and Haiti was to adopt a free market economy it would be a win/win situation.
A win for Haiti and a big win for the DR. less Illegal Haitians and more Business for the DR.

I happen to know the CV of these three "wise men" very well.

I doubt not one word you say Generoso. A multi-year grant to "study" the problems and suggest possible "solutions" will be high on their agenda. Expense accounts to include a few trips to the US and Europe, etc. But to be honest, the same stuff happens here in the US, and across academia. An opportunity beckons, and they want to fill the void.

That kind of corruption exists all over the world, and is part of doing business, and it will always happen. As you know some of the international grants and aid have the same rules, like you must buy the products of the country giving the grant, or hire their nationals as consultants, and so forth.
But these three "wise men" are not that sophisticated like that, they go by the Haitian rule of 95/5.
Which translates to 95% for me and the 5% leftovers "for the people". lol.

Hopeless!

The only people that have an interest in Haiti are the ones that'll make a buck from it.

Those trying to survive there only have an interest in their survival. They can't think any further.

If Kafka had invented a country, it would have been Haiti.

Haiti will be rebuilt. Once that election is done the money and reconstruction will begin. Preval's corrupt administration must leave before change comes. Maybe as Haiti gets better, its relationship with its neighbor DR will improve and trading can increase.

Let's hope so.....
But the idea that once election is done the money and reconstruction will begin ?

One is left with wheres the past donated money at now ? or that the new future money donated will begin to flow ?

People donate and want to see results !

The same place the old money went ?

One corruption replaced by another ?

Relationship with the DR will improve and trading can increase ? Please explain !

GOD HELP THE PEOPLE OF HAITI.
