Santo Domingo. - President Leonel Fernandez last night announced that the university which Dominican Republic will donate to Haiti will be ready within two years and will cost of US$30 million, shared with the private sector.
The Head of State displayed in the National Palace the scale model of what will be the Higher Education in Center in Limonade, Haiti, to be built on an area of 300,000 square meters.
During the activity, the chief executive affirmed that the university will be handed over by the Government and the Dominican people on January 12, 2012, to mark the second anniversary of the earthquake that devastated the neighboring country.
He said part of the work’s cost, confirmed by its tender offers, will be donated by the construction sector.
Prior to presenting the project, Fernandez held a minute of silence in memory of the quake’s victims.

This is incredible, Leonel. you are not given the DR a 4% to the education of Dominicans and here you are in foreign land building university, while the Education Minister is spending million of dollars in books to teach Dominican with misspelled words, no chair, no blackboard in classroom and you are not doing anything about this moron of minister you hire. You should be a shame.

But who is going to fund and maintain it on a day to day basis?
With the state of the Dominican Republic's own education system for once I would agree with those who say charity should start at home.

There are so many Haitian students in the Dominican universities , especially in Santiago , that this plan may keep those Haitians in their own country , and free up positions for Dominicans. .However , to build a university in one year, because 12 January 2012 is next year and not two years away, takes a great stretch of imagination and I can not see that happening nor can I imagine that $30 million is anywhere near enough money .
Maybe just all a fantasy as is the thought of part free construction .

Our fearless Dominican patriots that fought for our country's freedom and independence from Haiti are turning in their graves, and glad they are dead. This is the straw that broke the camel's back.
President Leonel Fernandez will go down in history as the Dominican Benedict Arnold with a tale
of disappointment, betrayal and the ultimate slap in the face to the poor uneducated Dominican.

A thing I can bet on:
10 years after, the University and the Hospital that the Dominicans people are building, be finished;
Haiti will still remain in Ruins.
The International Community will not release the promised amount of money (around 11 Billions US$) for Haiti rebuilt. Because the lack of confidence on the Haitian Government (THEY SAY) and I say that they don't trust George W. Bush and Bill Clinton (USA) either.

Perhaps the Real reason this is happening is that behind the scene LF and his international backers are financing this symbol of rapprochement between DR and Haiti. LF and his crew gain international backing for their modernization program and the international backers gain Haiti stabilization. No need to visit that awful site of Haitians fleeing for south Florida and the islands in the Caribbean. Keep them confined to the island domain. If LF and his gang do the job, more cookies for them, more accommodation through international and regional financial organizations. Of course, the sham of occasional deportation schemes to wet the appetite of some domestic nationalist; but the overall plan remains afoot: regional containment of the burgeoning Haitian Question within the domain of the island of Hispaniola. The trick is to keep the momentum going and delaying the day of reckoning. How far will LF and his boys keep it going? Disbursements of cookies will be key.

FOOLS, some of you are! Dr. Fernandez is simply being STRATEGIC, because he knows in the long run a stable DR needs to have a stable Haiti. While building a university will not solve the Haitian Immigration problem overnight, it will however show the goodwill of the Dominican People and give hope to the Haitian People. A more educated Haitian will not need to cross the border illegally and may want to stay home and give back to the community which will create jobs. Also, in the eyes of the world DR is not just getting rid of illegals but providing leadership in helping the Haitian People build a centre for learning, that in itself is priceless. Thank God for Dominicans who think outside the box, otherwise our country would still be in the dark ages.

Your right Haiti will remain in it's current state. That is it, Haitians you are looking at the future of your country a spoiled ruined state, and now you are exporting your crap to DR. Thank you very much Haiti. ONE YEAR FRIGGIN YEAR AND NOTHING. I'm going to sound like Gmiller here, pathetic.......

Actually, LF is playing the "Good Cop Bad Cop" routine. Massive deportation combined with a Goodwill gesture, the building of a 30 million dollar University Complex. Brilliant! He kills two birds with these two schemes!

The problem Dominicans have with the building of the haitian univeristy is not the gesture; it is the timing in the midst of a self-centered ideologist who cares more about his international profile than his citizenry. That's the sticking point here; how do you justify doing this for a foreign country while you can't eve follow your country's constitutional guarantess? Not that the constitution has been anything more than a tool to be shaped and used for political purposes in this country. But still.....

Trini,
If LF has any intentions of running again or having his wife succeed him in office, he'll have to get a handle on this situation. So there are going to be a significant flow going westward. LF needs to shore up his domestic base and secure it for his wife or himself heading into the re-election year of 2012. So, I think this two way play is his way of neutralizing these two difficult positions. But let's see what this year brings.

OMG - why don't you take care of your own first. You obviously can't afford to build a university for Haiti when you can't even take care of your own people. Also, it probably won't be finished in your lifetime anyway -

Haitians have not forgotten the time when with Dominicans, they were one people. Every Haitian appreciates the generosity DR has shown and continues to show Haiti at this time of stress and tragedy.. Haitians are grateful and greatly optimistic that both sides of the island will benefit greatly and we hope it is very soon, from DR's investment in Haiti's recovery.
