Haiti again in turmoil.
Zoom Picture

Santo Domingo.- Dominican Foreign Relations minister Carlos Morales yesterday said his country is prepared to mediate in the political crisis that affects Haiti, without interfering in the Haitian Government’s internal affairs.

Morales said the country’s mediation would be established through the United Nations, the Organization of American Sates (OAS), the European Union and the Haiti donor countries, including Brazil, the United States and Canada. “Anything which the Dominican Republic ca do without meddling in the internal affairs (of Haiti), we’ve always been willing to do it. We are in the best disposition to help Haiti so that it looks for a peaceful and democratic solution to the electoral crisis.”

The Dominican official noted however that Haiti’s Electoral Commission will hand down its ruling before January 30.

He said Haiti president René Préval’s visit to his par Leonel Fernandez in the National Palace on Saturday is one more example of the Dominican chief executive’s openness in international relations, since he has received other heads of State.

PRÉVAL VISITS FERNANDEZ

Préval’s unannounced visit to Fernandez on Saturday served to discuss the neighboring nation’s sanitary, economic and political crises, the latter further spiraled since the winner has yet to be declared.

It will be almost impossible to please everyone in this situation ,Before the election there were many complaints and accusations about the electoral commission , during the election there were more accusations and after the results were posted there are accusations of fraud and vote rigging .
Morales says that we are in the best position to help in this electoral crisis, but I think we are too close and it is far better to do everything through a joint body .

Ricardo, I agree 100%. DR has too many fish in this frying pan and it will opaque the necessary transparency. There are better solutions. Especially, since Preval himself is a leftover from the Duvalier days. Where is the accountability for all the donatyions made? Why has Clinton not been more vocal about what has happened after he and the Devil Bush asked the world to trust them and donate? Why is the defunct Haitian government allowed to derail the distribution of resources in the Country, earmarked for the suffering Haitian? Why is there such a demand placed on DR to absorb the Illegals and no assistance for DR? This is a International problem and it is all connected.

Countries cannot mediate. People do.

So, who is it going to be. Leonel??

Not sure it's a good idea, for the possibility of conflicts of interests.

So, a commission? They work so well here , idon't see why they wouldn´t in Haiti too.

Reports on a shelf. When they report at all.

Well done by the DR government. Minister Morales is issuing a canned diplomatic statement to please Preval, but in no way wanting to arbiter in that mess, caused by poor and inept timing.
LF knows that Preval came to bring a "poison gift" and is not as naive as he may seem. This electoral mess was allowed to compound because of Preval's greed and now he is looking for saviors.
The revolving door is in motion and Preval and his minions should exit quickly while they can.

Let me negotiate with them ...I will offer them Leonel as their president for 12 years ...he is building their university anyhow and seems to be so concerned with the Haitian anyhow.

So Leonel to Haiti and Castillo as DR president and Leonel can figure out what to do when Castillo begins repatriations!!

I feel that my Haitian government needs to be more decisive. We Haitians are getting sick and tired of the inability of our government to function at the most basic levels. Preval is not a leader and his focus is to blur the vision of those who voted for the non-Jude Celestin candidates. Stop running to others to solve our problems.

I must mention, however, Haiti has been a victim (far too long) of other countries (we know who they are) that intervene at their own interests. This has conditioned Haiti's leaders to lean on everybody else for advise and advisement. Haiti needs a strong hand and a hand of discipline. Stop allowing other countries to pull our strings (France and the US).

There is no crisis this matter have already been decided by the OAS decision whom Preval had brought in as an Arbitrary expert. They have decided the run off should be between Mirlande Manigat and Michel Martelly, the choice the people want .Jude Celestin and Unite is out. All that need to be done is for the CEP to make the changes official and set the date for the run off.

CarmenReyers- in regards to the Aid money after the earthquake Bubba and the Provisional Council might be able to tell you more about what is happening to it because the Haitian government have not gotten it either( never mind most of these donors wrote checks they could not cash). What you have donated to organization like the red cross in the name of the suffering of the Haitian people as usual most of that money does not goes to the cause you give to. it goes to these organization budget needs. You are lucky if your cause get 30% of total donation.

Haitians only understand ruthless dictators ,that's why though the Duvaliers were monsters it was the last time that Haiti had some form of stability.

Unfortunately DR has in some sectors a similar mentality although we have left the Trujillo age long behind people expect presidents to be saviours and need a strong government to keep them in check!

Again ,Haiti has been hurt from the outside as has DR but the MAIN problem in Haiti is internal and has to do with the mentality of the people ,once Haitians leave Haiti and start to assimilate another culture they are able to progress just like people in the Ghettos of the US who shed the baclwards culture of the Ghettos are able to progress .

Haitians need to look in the mirror and see their main problem and stop making excuses for if you blame someone else you are ignoring the things that YOU as a nation can change instead of blaming others and expecting them to fix things for you !

Culture and Language have little to do with the situation in Haiti. It is the result of have a very rough beginning and a very turbulent political system every since. People just assume that Haitian culture makes them 'behind' or 'incompatible' with the rest of the world, when in reality it has little to do with anything. Haiti has a Language, Music, History, Food, Traditions, Morals and Expectations like EVERY other Nation. But regardless of anything, I would rather see the Dominican Republic and Haiti come together as respective peoples sharing the precious Island of Quisqueya(or Ayiti, whatever you want). History has thus far told us a very sad story concerning the Dominican Republic and Haiti, it would be good if that story had a good ending.

Ahh Bernard ,the sickness of multiculturalism...

Having a different culture does not make all cultures equal and outside the PC world the results are what matters.

Haiti has had problems as have many other poor nations but in Haiti they were not prepared for the administration of a nation because you cannot create a nation full of illiterates and with backwards cultural precepts and expect it to succeed.
The issue of Kreyol is one that separates most Haitians from a linguistic affinity with MOST of the nations in this hemisphere in which Spanish,English and French are dominant .

Kanpe...pray tell me how Haiti is the most popular place in the Caribbean??

Bernard, the OFFICIAL name of the island is LA ESPAÑOLA or HISPANIOLA in English and since Haiti is the name of the western third it is definitely not acceptable as a name for the island.

Kanpe.anyone who is thinking will consider learning English ,Spanish and Chinese ,attachment to peripheral languages will only hold you

How many great author write in Kreyol ?
How many scientific journals are written in Kreyol ?
How many Nobel prize winners in Kreyol ?
How many inventions were thought in Kreyol ?

Who determines the laws governing the Kreyol language?

Is their such a thing as an authority to determine what is correct and incorrect in Kreyol??

You see Kreyol is an informal "language" ,which is ok if you want to use it at home but knowing Kreyol alone and being illiterate are almost the same thing in PRACTICAL terms.
If Haiti had French as the language spoken by ALL and a marginalised or non existent vudun Haiti would change but the attachment to the weakest parts of your heritage will keep you down .

Living in DELUSION means you never admit the base problem and if you don't admit your problems you can never overcome them.

Haitian children who live in decent housing ,eat three meals a day and have some sort of future are not really going to care what language is spoken nor if vudun disappears for those who emigrate (and prosper) eventually lose all those elements that are backwards regressive traits.

If Haitian children can be happy and speaking French or English ,what is the problem???
Do you prefer them to starve and suffer but keep an obscure dialect alive which will eventually disappear anyhow?

Haitian Kreyol has more than 12 million speakers and is here to stay. It is now an official language and is now used in instruction and government.

It has more speakers than Finnish, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish,
Hebrew, Bulgarian, Serbian and as many as Greek and Czech....all SINGLE country languages.

As you can see, a unique language has never prevented any country from progressing.

Haiti has two official languages; Haitian Kreyol and French with English as a growing third language.

Spanish is useless to Haiti......English is the third language Haitians should learn.

If you want to study great literature you can't do it in kreyol
If you want to become a true professional in any field you can't do it in kreyol

Antichrist ,only a fool would consider languages like Greek,Finnish and Swedish equal to that hodgepodge called Kreyol with a majority of speakers who happen to be illiterate and which arose from complete ignorance and illiteracy.

Haiti has two official languages of which only a small EDUCATED minority knows French while the vast UNEDUCATED majority speaks kreyol.

The one point you made that makes sense is for Haitians to learn English although it is hard to learn another language when you are illiterate so the first goal should be to educate in French as a mandatory subject and then worry about learning other languages ,

@pepe32

actually the fool is you.

You obviously know NOTHING about Haitian Kreyol or languages in general.

Illiteracy is one issue that has NOTHING to do with the language spoken....one can be illiterate in any language.

the point you are unable to understand is that the language spoken does not prevent any country from advancing.

most of the world would also not understand what a greek or a Norwegian wrote.....that is why your argument lacks intelligence.

Like it or not, Haiti has two official languages...HAITIAN and FRENCH. And English should be studied.

spanish is of NO WORTH

The issue of what language(s) haitians speak should be of no concern to you a dominican.

Your only concern should be your country and your border...CLOSE IT...SEAL IT....if you and your people don't have the balls to do it...then be quiet and accept the invasion of poor Haitians unable to gain access to a good country.
