Neyba, Dominican Republic.- Residents of the village Los Roas and the sector El Copey, southwestern Bahoruco province, met Sunday afternoon in an effort to get the owners of coffee plantations and other farms to normalize the presence of Haitian immigrants in their communities.

The business leader Mario Perez motivated the initiative, concerned with a spate of crimes involving Haitian nationals contracted by the owners of farms next to their communities, where the immigrants spend the night without any type of regulations.

The communities reacted to the foreigners’ presence after

Perez’s brother Ricardo was beaten and left gagged and tied, by several Haitians in an isolated area of Los Roas, and who later went to his house and stole several sacks of coffee and beans, and sold them to stores in Neyba.

Why is that people so often can't see past the 'now' of their own actions??? I hope and pray for a peaceful solution.

All those farms in the SW have been manned by Haitians workers for decades.

The people that climbed to the loma and set up farms under Trujillo are now senior, and their children for the most part are not interested in coger la misma lucha. They're in la Capital, en Los Paises, pero la loma???

Solution: Haitian encargados. They've been there for 15 years.

Yesterday's solution is today's problem..

A strong and accountable labor system with Workers Permits is the only answer moving forward. But the KEY word is accountable. If this system is allowed to degenerate into a farce, then nothing will be accomplished. Haitians under this agreement would come to work during planting and harvesting periods; returning to Haiti when the down season begins. This will help Haiti and the DR. Haitians will establish their families in Haiti and be able to support them without having to illegally move them to the DR. The DR gets to use cheap Haitian labor for their agricultural output, thus remaining competitive with imports.

Dutchmasters- Congrats! You are the winner! (Number 6 too, how appropriate) I was wondering just how long it was going to take for someone to say something biased and ignorant. Well, now I know. "man just kill them"?? People are defending INNOCENT Haitians, Men (and especially) Women and Children. Those who are out committing crimes, shooting and looting should be brought to justice and are not a part of that VAST majority of Haitians that people are trying to defend, and defending them will in turn encourage proper treatment of everyone. If everyone has your Nazi-esque attitude, what happens if there is an earthquake on the OTHER side of the border? (God forbid) What happens when Dominicans are put into dire situations?? Fortunately there are enough level-headed people out there who can beyond there own nose, and understand why is it important to treat people of all Nationalities fairly.

You are top shelf. Keep up the good comments.

I could hope that we could have a constructive thread that addresses the issues without attacking the integrity of people. We want resolution, not confusion.

DutchMasters, i do not know the sun personally, either, but i do know that it is hot, because it effuses heat. therefore, using that logic, i can assert, with certitude, that you are a low grade cretin, based on the stuff you write. now how is that for connectivity? if this went over your head, just notify me, and i will rewrite it for your consumption in crayons.

You know what!! lets just get rid of all the Haitians. The educated Haitians need to go back and help rebuild Haiti, so many educated Haitians living in DR. Why don't the Educated (business men/women) Haitians go back home because because it is not safe ? Meanwhile these same uncle tom's wants the uneducated, criminal Haitians in DR. All Haitians get the hell out of my country. All of you are bigots, go back home and help your country prosper. Why is it so hard for the Haitians to be proud on their side of the island??!!!

Yes, you are correct and those being help are appreciative and not robbing from those helping them. So go back and get the help that all the mighty nations offered Haiti. Get a real president that doesn't come running to LF, for help. We have such a nice president 30mil to build university for Haitians, and for the Dominicans nada.

@vegano - "All of you are bigots, go back home and help your country prosper. Why is it so hard for the Haitians to be proud on their side of the island??!!!"
Really? I mean really? First, to start any sentence with a opinion dressed as a fact is a display of bias and partiality. Secondly, Haitians being in the Dominican Republic has nothing to do with pride, they are simply trying to survive and if you were over there you would be doing the EXACT same thing they are doing.

Except for the stealing and violence. I am an "expat" as such even after 30 years here I consider myself somewhat of a guest here, there for (mostly) on good behaivour. I am considering some break even investment in Haiti now in fact, but - I will wait for the dust to settle after the elections.
I don't have enough to lose money like NGO's using OPM (other people's money) but I would like to see Haitians empowsered to help themselves. Sure should lean on the Papa in Rome who is so against birth control, I see exploding population in the entire Hispanola as being the no. 1 problem to sustainable environment - who want to merely exist in a garbage dump

vegano,

I told you where I live and I have not seen you yet. I thought that you were going to get rid of me, neighbor, especially since we live so close to each other. Do you want me to get closer to you and meet you at the Texaco station at the bottom of the hill? Maybe at the Burger King in La Vega?

Stop trying to incite violence when you know full well that you are too afraid to stand out front and confront anybody. Maybe those poor, scared Haitians. Let me go do the same thing that you are doing and threaten the fish in my tank.

Try to have some compassion.

"compassion" can be had but not at the expense of a soverign nation.

That is what Haitains want and that can't happen. Close the border!!!!!!

Build Haiti!!!

@super_lover - unfortunately there too many people that cant see how compassion and understanding will benefit THEM in the long run. There are way too many people who simply see - Haitians = Bad. @ny4life - That is one the MAIN problems, people automatically jump to the worst and often most unlikely scenario, jumping over a billion more other LIKELY things. Haitians DO NOT want to subdue the Sovereignty of the Dominican Republic. The VAST majority of Haitians are in the Dominican Republic for one thing - to better their living conditions, to survive. Thats it. They are not trying to start some new Haitian revolution. That is BEYOND improbable as it is. 1) That would take organization and planning, something that simply can not happen in such a disastrous context. 2) Having a successful Democratic vote IN HAITI would be a feat unto itself, how much more improbable it is to have a Political take over in the Dominican Republic. 3) The US would NEVER allow it. Period.

200 years from now ,It wont be No Haiti ,no DR ,I predict one nation will assimilate the other.
This is destiny and no one can stop it.
So any one advocating deportation, wall building are just dreaming and then they will wake up.

Super, You have never invited me to meet with you, and recall it was someone else, where you mention your neighbors were Dominicans and Haitians. You know what I wish you all the best but why can't you live in Haiti? are you concern to be a crime victim by your own people? Growing up in The Bronx has not made me a peaceful person, and I do not like the abuse. But if I am threaten like you are doing to me, I do have the right to defend myself any means possible.

I'm not trying to incite violence the Haitians that are committing the crime are creating this uncomfortable environment for us to live in peace. If this continues what is the future of our DR children? Like I have always indicated educated Haitians step up help your fellow Haitians and stop looking at DR as your picnic. Were you shit and run back to Haiti to avoid prosecution.

Cantave, you might have a valid point but we (DR) are not concern about 200years from now the whole planet will be different by then. We are concern of what going on now our living conditions and our children future. Hopefully if the earth is livable the Haitians will be educated by then and not in their current state of termite mentality. Yes I am aware they are many educated Haitians but not living in Haiti where you are most needed.
