NEW YORK.- The leading contender for Dominican Republic’s ruling PLD party presidential candidacy affirmed Sunday that despite the accomplishments of president Leonel Fernandez’s Administration and the country’s advances in the last few decades, a high number of Dominicans live a “damned” life, a situation he says will solve when he becomes the nation’s next president.

Danilo Medina said as many as 750,000 youngsters live in poverty, and when they can’t find a job, opt for a life of crime. He said they are forced to live in squalor and in houses built mostly on government lands.  “They must go out and burn tires to demand a solution to their grievances from the governments and mobilize to request the construction of a hospital, a school or a roof to live under.”

“That’s how damned is the life of a great amount of our compatriots who live in the Dominican Republic,” he said.

Medina, speaking in a rally organized by supporters in Manhattan’s Hilton Hotel, added that another large number of Dominican-Haitian youths is in the streets working in the worst conditions imaginable, selling everything from dogs to cell phones beneath traffic lights.

I'm sure the first thing he would do would be to reduce the civil service payroll and the politikeros remuneration package by 50%.

Hot air.

He and Mejia should both be on NBC Tuesday nights at 9:00 p...

That's when they show The Biggest Loser.

And certainly they both qualify.

I just came back from DR, again. Things just get worse for the general population....it really doesn't matter who is in charge, el pueblo always gets the short end of the stick. Til there's real law that applies to everyone equally nothign will change. I mean, you can commit crimes with impunity if you have money and connections and nothing will happen to you......it's truly a paradise: for the rich and connected at the expense of the majority. Eh pa' tras que va el pais! Embarassing and disheartening.

So they CHOOSE a life of crime? Who's fault is that?

"He said they are forced to live in squalor and in houses built mostly on government lands."

Who is FORCING them? Why are they allowed to trespass of Government land?

The title should be.

Many Dominicans live a “damned” life, because of us politicians.

We 'politicians' have to stop transparent corruption, steal and lie with impunity and stop all other asocial behavior.

They should stop the money for political buddies and people who don't do and thing. Put that money into infrastructure like roads, bridges, electricity and water. There is enough work for all.
