Drought and downpours take Haiti to the brink.
Zoom Picture

Dajabón, Dominican Republic. – Haiti’s precarious conditions have spurred an increase in illegal immigration across to Dominican territory in the last few weeks, the Caribbean country’s humanitarian organizations denounced Sunday

Quoted by EFE, the Haiti based Human and Civilians Rights Protection Brigade and the National Food Security Coordinator told local media that the neighboring country is on the brink of extreme famine, which could increase Haitian immigration to different countries, especially Dominican Republic.

National Food Security Coordinator spokeswoman Gary Mathien said the Caribbean country is one step away from extreme famine as the result of the drought and subsequent rains. “This situation makes it difficult for the Haitians to find food, which will be scarce within a few months."

Erect a huge wall.
If this famine does happen
DR could provide some aid to Haiti, like food and medical help
But they can't be allowed to cross over and stay permanently in our country illegaly.
Shut the border, send 10,000 more troops to stop the hordes of haitians that are bound to invade dr

I was talking to an Haitian camarero at the week end in Zona Colonial and he was telling me that he has 9 brothers and sisters and that this quite normal ,,,how can Haiti be helped when stupid parents bring so many babies into an impossible situation where almost assuredly they will not be able to find enough to eat ,Why does this country expect aid when it cannot even have a sensible social programme.
Even here the poorer people breed like rabits without any thought about the future of the children they are bringing into the world but is much worse in Haiti

Ricardolito,

I agree.

Last week I sort of saw this one coming with those rain clouds at our south/east.......one disaster after another.

EXTREME FAMINE....
Africa....not enough water surrounded by a desert.
Haiti......too much water and surrounded by an ocean.

There are a few people out there who would have one believe different.....I can think of one, can you ?

It's a reverse hate thing better known as a self hate.

xwill is absolutely right, they will dig, or swim, or pay corrupt officials to get them across. The only thing a wall would do is to insure a thriving ladder market at the border...a wall is not needed, what is needed is border enforcement and sustainable punishment to those that are found derelict of their sworn duty.

Imagine that.....so now it's the responsibility of the U.S government to help, and why ?

If the U.S does decide to help [U.S tax dollars] it's from the kindness of our hearts America has always came to the worlds aide.

IDEA....why not have Castro donate some rubber rafts or that brigade of top notch medical
professional services after all there only a hope, ship and a jump away.

America should back off, America first....should private U.S Church's/organizations/sector fit the bill so be it.

This is such an easy problem to fix, just so easy! You don't need to build a wall, kill people?, or anything like that. All you need to do is not give jobs to illegal immigrants. That's it. This means that they won't be able to stay on our side because they won't have anything to buy food or have shelter. It's really our fault and yes the gov's, but mostly ours.

Haiti is on the brink of extreme famine
-----------------------------------
WTF is this article talking about, for the last 20 years Haiti have not grow it's own food but depend mainly on imports for it's staples ,even when there was a bull run in commodities prices there was no famine why should there be one now. Second the UN mission in Haiti in it's current form is one of the biggest hustle for that useless organization ,only peace keeping mission in a country where there is no conflict ( a mission where a personal with five years of law enforcement experience gets paid a salary of 10,000 usd per month, while the PNH who does the real work on the ground can't pay it's officers a descent salary) . If Haiti was under threat of famine I'm sure the UN would have been the one ringing the Alarm so they can get more funds out of their members in the name of stabilizing Haiti.

Wow, i cant believe some of you are actually recommending shooting those who try to cross the border. Building a wall or shooting immigrant wont solve the problem.
Haiti needs to increase its minimum wage to a livable standard, they need to rebuild their cities, which are still knocked down since the earthquake, reconstruction would creates thousands of jobs.
The problem is bureaucracy, and corruption, a wall or a bullet to the head wont solve this issue.

Never mind the hidden genocide commented in Cuba during their revolution on her own people. NO ! not in Cuba.

America is learning a hard lesson in U.S history like never before, the numbers who supported Da prez. are dropping, many are seeing the light the answer will be the 2012 election.

How did the posts get from Haiti to Cuba?? Anyway... my question is for all you who support "building a wall" or shooting illegal immigrants... I don't think any of you would be happy if the US built wall on the Mexican border... or shooting randomly at any Dominican Yola passing the Mona passage? HOW MANY Dominican Yol's are there in WASHINGTON HEIGHTS alone?? And you don't think any of them are illegal? Get Real! The illegal immigrants in the US are the basis of our economic structure. & the Haitians, whether you want to admit it or not, are part of the Dominican economy as well. The American citizens (or LEGAL residents)don't want to wash dishes or clean toilets, so the illegal Dominicans do it. And in DR, I sure as hell don't see Dominicans out in those campos/bateys picking tomatoes or cutting ca~a at 1 in the afternoon when that sun is BEATING DOWN ON THEM LIKE THE FIRES OF HELL!! What we need, here in the US, In DR, & in Haiti, is TOLERANCE, COMPROMISE AND EDUCATION!

Is evident how little you know about the Haitian situation on the DR.
Do you think haitians only work on the fields, picking tomatoes and cutting sugarcane?
Don't you know about Haitian watchmen,waiters,construction workers,house maids,just to name a few?
Do you know that they have cheapen the labor force int he DR?
Do you dare to say that Dominicans don't want any part of the aforementioned jobs?

Can you please explain, how Dominican nationals can compete with the such cheap labor force?
Haitians would do anything for slave wages!

There are no other feasible ways of resolving this HUGE problem that can take us all into an abyss of misery and total economic and social breakdown!!. Whether we like it or not, for DR's sake, we are OBLIGATED to rescue Haiti from itself. The UN, the US or the EU will never do enough (althought they have tried), to cure the disease of poverty and ignorance afflicting it since time inmemorial. .If Haiti goes further down the tubes, we will follow right behind and be sucked into it like a black hole!

Yes, in deed BUT WHAT tunbagobierno, states IS ALSO PERTINENT to the discussion! DR will surely GO DOWN THE ABYSS if it allows itself to be drawn into the abyss of HAITI. Yes, help but be careful, very careful, to even think that DR can untangle that dilemma rapped in a riddle in a haystack! Just look at the article mentioned above on Martelley's inability to forge a new government! And this is likely to continue until the end of year elections for new members of Parliament! Of course, the poor continue to suffer and some migrant illegally into DR!

The HAitian debacle does have an international solution: distribute say 500,000 per year for 10 years throughout the world, create better job opportunities and Haiti has a future. Right now it's a holding pattern and the DR is looking into the abyss.

~tumbagobierno~ is spewing the same old racist rhetoric of years past aimed mostly at Hispanics in the US. "do you know that they cheapen the labor force in DR". just substitute DR for US. and you got the same vile hatred typical of some, but coming mostly from "African-Americans"., In their quest to belittle our race and suppress the surge in Latino buying power.
and for goodness sake don't refer to them as "black"- Americans, they'll bash you in!!.
They, blacks, blamed their "third-class citizen" status on us. They said that we "stole jobs that should have been rightfully their's. So it's the same old song. We, Dominicans blame the Haitians for all our ills and inadequacies. It's time we stop blaming and start finding solutions to this very dangerous situation which otherwise will screw us all up, big time!

You are incited by the elite to hate the Haitians.Just as the "Jews" or Israelis are incited to hate the Palestinians so you end up killing each other. The elite who run this world (and manipulate the economy ) want 95 percent of us dead. Most organisations are elite controlled and the money given to them will NOT help those it is intended for.
