Santo Domingo.- The large number of pregnant teenagers
seeking care at the Activo 20-30 Foundation’s Health Center is causing serious
concern among the medical staff working there, according to hospital director Mario
Moreno.
He said the situation is made even more serious by the fact that many of the
pregnant minors are infected with HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted
diseases.
Every month some 400 pregnant teenagers between the ages of 13 and 18 are seen
at the center, from the neighborhoods of La Ciénaga, Los Guandules, María
Auxiliadora, 27 de Febrero and another 22 neighborhoods near the Foundation, whose
premises are on Federico Velázquez street at the intersection with Albert
Thomas street in Santo Domingo.
The center director blamed the high number of teenage pregnancies to family
breakdown, irresponsible fathers and overcrowding that affects thousands of
families in these areas of the capital.
The doctor was speaking on the occasion of a medical campaign organized by the
foundation this week with the support of more than 25 medical laboratories. He
said they have a check-up program in more than 25 neighborhoods.

All facets of the Dominican Republic are at risk, because of the 2 million haitians in our sovereign country, don't kid yourself. Crime, Lack of education, HIV/AIDS, No regard for humanity, imagine 2 million people in a country of 9 million, You don't have to be a genius to figure out that all the ills of those 2 million people will be suffered and/or transferred to the new "host"

I think there are 3 issues here at least,
1 More than half the pregnancy cases in the DR hospitals are Haitians ...they are of all ages and they are either living here or come cacross the border to the Dominican hospitals.
2 Although there is ahuge difference between a girl of 13 and 18 as quoted in the article ,latin girls and boys mature early and the girls very often want to have a baby ..it is not that the baby is unwanted at birth , although I am sure the girls do notthink about the babies dreadful future ..It is that they actually want a baby .
3 There needs to be much better education from both the state and church on teenage sex and pregnancy ..It is absolutely trying to swim against the tide on this issue and simply say that teenagers must not have sex. There has to be a programme of education of safe sex and the potential dangers of having children ,for all concerned

Better border control and re-repatriation with better education for Dominicans-both boys and girls-will yield far better results. Parents play a huge part in this disaster. Many are repeating the same cycle of poor choices made by parents.

Contraception (condoms, pills and injections) are provided free by the Dominican Republic government and these girls know it. Everyone in their village knows they are sexually active but their hypocritical Christian mother pretends she doesn't know, then throws her out when she falls pregnant. She can then drop out of school, move in with her boyfriend's family and not worry about an education, career or job, get fat and enjoy the attention at the baby-shower and christening - a lifestyle choice made by many.

One day some morons will also say that's it's because of Haitians, that english teenagers have babies so early.
Teen Pregnancy is due to lack of parentage /morals. In the DR many grown @ss men ( mid thirties and more) don't hesitate to sleep with young teenagers.

The incidence of teen-pregnancy in the UK is not nearly as high as in the Dominican Republic. Also the UK has a welfare system to ensure the basic needs of mothers and babies are met, despite their circumstances. The Dominican Republic does not.
Interestingly in Australia, such is the government's concern about falling birth-rates, that in addition to generous welfare handouts, un-married mothers get a $4000 bonus!

The AIDS/HIV virus (of which there are a number of different strains) was engineered in a lab an introduced into homosexuals in Manhatten in the early 80s and a different strain into the African population that is more effectively spread heterosexually. Many patients in Africa did not really have AIDS but the big pharma drugs killed them off anyway. Seeing the whole island of Hispanolia is a target for genocide (your huge mineral resources) expect a high AIDS rate and then to be killed off by the drugs.Seek alternative treatment.

I have a problem when people state that Sex Ed is the answer as if it were some sort of a panacea to STD and teen pregnancies. I have been hearing that recorded message repeated for decades and the problem has not improve but rather gottern worse not only in the DR but all over the world.
No doubt Sex Ed is better then none at all, but statistics have clearly demonstrated that Sex Education in and of itself does not work. Why? Because sex Ed has been limited to providing information only on the mechanical use of contraceptives to prevent pregnancy and STD, and left it at that. It gave kids a false sense of security, when in fact nothing is 100% safe for anything. Sex Ed has failed to address the spiritual needs of human make-up, when it should have combined it with character development, moral upbringing, self-esteem self-respect and self-control. Otherwise, the ways things are now, we might end up like dogs and hump on the first girl we see waiting at the bus stop.

Roy do you know the definition of insanity? Doing the same things over and over again expecting different results. You are talking without facts and statistics. What you suggest is outlandish and only further promotes sexual activity among youth. The fact it is no coincidence as moral standards have relaxed over the decades, teen pregnancies and abortions, have sky rocketed. During the 1950's when a unmarried girl became pregnant, there was a stigma attached. It brought embarrasment to the family and community. It is no longer true today, it is a well accepted and very normal, every day event.
Nevertheless, you did not read my post correctly and took it out of context. I clearly suggested a combination of both Sex Education with character development plus an added spiritual component to the mix. The spiritual needs of the youth is important and must be addressed the same. I don't necessarily mean it from a religious perspective although it is as equally important as well.

Nehesy you are historically correct, but you are also factually wrong.
Certainly female genital mutilation pre-dates Islam, in the same way as oppression of women, torture of heretics and human sacrifice pre-dates Christianity, and genocide pre-dates Hitler's Nazi regime.
However Islam IS responsible for modern-day perpetration of the practice. A fatwa issued by an important Islamic cleric in 1950 declared:
"Female circumcision is an Islamic practice mentioned in the tradition of the Prophet, and sanctioned by Imams Jurists, in spite of differences on whether it is a duty or a sunna. We support the practice of the sunna and sanction it in view of its effect on attenuating the sexual desire in women and directing to the desirable moderation"

Roy does not understand the difference between religion and fanatics who use religion in a negative way, take advantage and exploit the vulnerability of believers. This is akin to a fudiciary relationship professionals have where clients place blind trust and become vulnerable. It could be a doctor, Lawyer, counselor, psychiatrist who can easily manipulate and advantage of others only to realized when it is too late, one became a victim of a professional who violated strict rules of ethics.
Now are we going to blame the whole medical field, the psychiatrict and legal professions for violations committed against clients? Should we condemn all doctors and lawyers for the acts of a few? No of course not. The same goes with religion. We can not totally discredit the bible and all religions for the despicable actions of individuals, unless the church directly condones and institutionalizes it as is the case of the Catholic church. One of a few exceptions among few.
