SANTO DOMINGO. – The Labor Ministry, through National Salaries Committee, increased the Free Zones workers’ minimum wage 17% in two stages, in effect starting October 1.
Labor Ministry Resolution 10-2011 stipulates that the first application of the wage increase for those employees will be 10% percent, for which the minimum pay will increase to RD$5,940.
It said the agreement reached between management and labor, the remaining readjustment will be 7 percent, in effect starting January 2, reason why the minimum wage for Free Zones employees will be taken to RD$6,320, and urges other sectors to follow suit.
"Acknowledging that the National Salaries Committee’s attributes are limited to setting the minimum wage, the parts urge those companies whose financial and competitiveness condition make its possible, and in a voluntary manner, to also conduct wage revisions in favor of workers who earn above the minimum wage," Labor said in an emailed statement.

They should put the politikeros on minimum wage for a while, see what it feels like.
RD$5940 doesn't even come close to filling the gas tank on one of them Maseratis.

@WalterPolo....I agree entirely. Lets see a politico trying to live on that amount of income for a month! They spend more than that in a couple of hours or on a night out.

Filling a gas tank of a Maserati?
How about just a regular vehicle? I was in DR a few weeks ago and it took 4500 to fill out the tank of my mom's minivan, and it already had 1/4 of a tank, and I did use regular, not premium.
5940 is roughly $156 US... and then you wonder why the rich gets richer while the poorer gets poorer.

anthony u prob work for the PLD or u might be against the poor and want them to stay poor, a wage increase is good any way you look at it, if people earn more money, that money is reinvested back into the economy, thus generating more tax money for the gov and more money for stores, which is the strategy the US follows and look at how good their economy is, but here in DR everybody should earn a minimum of 14000 peso a month to be able to survive.

actually, anthonyc does not believe in wages of any kind. he believes that the whole concept of paying people for their labor is an abhorrent liberal philosophy, which is a conspiratorial attempt to undermine business, and reduce shareholder fortunes. if he ever became the leader of a country, the first decree he would sign into being is one that instituted slavery, and labor camps. the poor would have to work for the rich for free, and the only rewards they would reap would be the privelege of coming over to the mansions on the weekends to clean the floors, and to wash the Maybachs.

Isantiago, it would be even funnier if it was not true. this is a guy who believe that employers like Carlos Slim are actually doing his workers a favor by employing them! the guy is a certified retard.

Very simple, Dominican "capitalist" are like that Gipsy in my fathers story, by the time they teach workers how not to eat they will be all dead ( capitalist, and workers too).
Same goes for Cuban “communist”.
I do not think that they get much work out of hungry workers in Cuba either.

yes, Perception. PER MONTH. if it was per week, it would be an outrage. per month, it is slavery, all over again. i know guys here with call centers paying people 2 dollars per hour. less than 5000 dollars per year! now you understand why the world´s economy is shot. there are no buyers for the products which are made, because people get wages like these.
