Bill Clinton, an unidentified Foreign Relations Minister, Carlos Morales.

Zoom Picture

NEW YORK. - The countries friends and donors of Haiti today pledged to replace words with actions and increase their efforts to expedite the reconstruction of the Caribbean nation, devastated by the January 2010 earthquake.

The initiative stemmed from a Minister level meeting for Haiti, in New York’s Continental hotel, headed by U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and her husband, ex president Bill Clinton.

Dominican Republic was represented by Foreign Relations minister Carlos Morales, who had earlier demanded that donors go from aid on emergencies and conjunctures, to concrete facts, proposal that was supported by the group of countries which are partners for Haiti’s reconstruction.

After the meeting, which journalists didn’t have access to, Morales said the activity served to go from announcements to concrete efforts, while reiterating Dominican Republic’s commitment to its neighboring nation.

The diplomat added that to coordinate the bilateral agenda even more, president Leonel Fernandez will meet in New York City with Haiti par Michel Martelly, but didn’t specify a date. "All the donor countries there, including the United States pledged to fulfill their financial commitments with Haiti."

And the check is in the mail. Let's first see it before we comment on its worthiness. Too many times we've been burned, so let's see if these nations actually honor their commitments.

What a vile thing to say! Blow up the place? ethnic cleansing?

It is the haters in this world that ignite wars and breed, induce discord amongst people!.
You're a prime example of ignoramuses who bring about alienation and hostility.... Normally, I don't go around insulting people, but in this case, I'll make an exception.
You're as dumb as they come! -- Non nostrum tantas componere lites!....You're a hater of humankind!

RonEvane, you are right - we should all sit in a circle, hold hands and sing "Kumbayah" together!

Yes, Mr. Roy. That's a good start. After that, we can then discuss why people, instead of singing together, decide that killing each other, is a better alternative.
It makes all the sense in the world to try to understand the problem and resolve it together.
I realize that we, DR, can't single- handedly untangle Haiti's predicament. It is a huge problem we can't manage for them. They must try hard to do so without invading our territory, as it has been for the last decade and beyond.
Of Course, we don't want this burden in our hands! But what are we to do? Build a wall across our border, as some have suggested? Deport them all? That's a big job!
The best thing we can do is to be part of an international effort to find answers to this perplexing conundrum and do something about it. Hating and killing doesn't solve a thing!
And if, eventually, there's any singing to be done, I'd like to be part of it. Perhaps you can join us too.!?

i call on all haitians to help themselves and stop waiting for handouts, work towards your future by demanding and pressuring your leadership to do the work they were elected to do and stop the politiking and the bulls*t.

If the international community haven't removed all the earthquake debris , remove it yourself, don't sit around waiting for somebody else to come and do the work you were put on this earth to do.

Haiti was a failed state long before the earthquake. Earthquakes are "normal" for the region - Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Neither country is prepared and there are no building standards. Instead they rely on Jesus. Haiti will remain a basket-case as long as everyone steals from everyone else, no matter how much aid is poured in. The government and the aristocracy are corrupt on a big scale. The people are corrupt on their own scale and have destroyed the environment that once supported them. Haiti cannot help itself. Foreign help is creamed off by corruption. The Dominican Republic can least afford to help - it is heading in the same direction. The only real hope for the people and the country if for USA to annex Haiti and take full control - not just occupation. Of course it won't happen. Therefore the Dominican Republic must do all it can to prevent being dragged down as Haiti sinks.

From what I am understanding the little money spent in Haiti from the promised international aid has been going to emergency situtions like setting up tents, feeding and health issues. Very little monies has gone to actual infrastructure. Now with presidential elections over and the Haitian govt stabalizing concrete plans can now be implemented. Now is the time to be hopeful of a rebirth of PAP. It could be rebuilt into a modern well designed city.

Let's be hopeful and think positive. Snipping at each other (Dominicans and Haitians) accomplishes nothing. A better rebuilt Haiti is good for both countries.

you comparing apples with oranges roy ,haiti slow infrastructure and dry land will not attract dominicans to there country , now just because they get the tittle of american citizens , it does not make it a good country to seek refuge ? plus you have to take into account the language barriers and bad history , as in contrast to puerto rico where they speak the same launguage and some what practice the same customs .

Meanwhile the parliament of haitian demand the begin of departure of peacepeekers in 2012.
for come back to the speech of MARTELLY, he speek for haiti and the country of the south, he demand to UN to stop the money they give in the left hand and the take in the right hand!
he told he thinks it's time the country like haiti to develop with her resources!
he said haiti is standing!
