Santo Domingo. - Foreign Relations minister Carlos Morales on Tuesday accused Canadian newspaper Globe and Mail of distorting Dominican Republic’s relation with Haiti, in a recent Op-Ed which says that denying descendants of Haitians of Dominican citizenship is “unfair.”

In a letter to the daily, the official called Dominican Republic-Haiti relations normal, harmonious and close, “characteristics extended to Haitian citizens who live and work in Dominican territory.”

Morales said the Haitians are protected by the same rights stipulated under the Dominican Constitution, noting that investigations and possible future cancellation of civil registry documents such as birth certificates, in no way violate the country’s commitments to human rights.

He said Dominican Republic cannot be asked to bear the burden and human costs of the Haitian nation’s economic situation.

The really sad thing is that if we were not ruled by a bunch of crooks we could build up our country, help to build up Haiti, and still have plenty left over.

Why the heck we have to build Haiti?

Haiti must be built by Haitian ppl. One should be the owner of its product. As a result, appreciating what you have created with your own heart and soul. We are not super power to be compelled to care for Haitii. Except for the fact - they are sadly our neighbors. If Canada feels we are evil towards Haitians then they should take them all in. They have plenty of openned land inhabited and waiting for all Haitians to develop it into a super power house.

Common Canada, take the first step into helping your fellow Haitians. What are you now 30 millions. Another 10 millions Haitians will make you a stronger country.

You become the example and we'll lead right through...

PEACE

It is not for us to rebuild Haiti by ourselves....Beyond a moral obligation to help our fellow humans, we're not in any way, legally bound take on this formidable, burdensome and extremely problematic undertaking...!
The international community hasn't done enought to help prevent the very poor from having to come to our side in search of food, clean water and decent housing.
If these essentials were met, no sane Haitian would need to jump the fence to face uncertainty and abuse in a land that doesn't want them in the first place.... Awarding citizenship to illegals and their children, won't solve diddly. It will only encourage more illegal migration. No doubt.

Uh Canada why are you then deporting a lot of people from the China and countries of that region that are living and working in your country without paper. I have a friend from England that was deported back to his country for being illegally in Canada when you still bend for the queen of England.

You know I think I have the solution to the problem with illegal immigration in the Dominican Republic. All people (farmers) have to do is not have Haitian immigrants working for them and this would solve almost everything. Where I'm from in San Jose de las Matas it's like we're being invaded by the Haitians and in a way it's our fault. The thing is we are all too corrupt the government and the people and in order to change that we must become more educated.

The Dominican Republic will play, and has, a pivitol role in the reconstruction and recovery of Haiti. The DR has the infrastructure, the technology and the expertise to help funnel resources to Haiti. Those resources, however, should come from the concerned international community and not solely from the DR. It is in everyone's best interests to see Haiti become a stable and prosperous society.

It's Almost Finnish def a beautiful campus. The issue at hand at the moment is whether it will be run by the Haitian government or a private entities.

In regard to the Minister's beef with the Canadian newspaper here is what the world leading magazine The Economist have to say on the same issue

I'm with you JPD, all the nations complaining about DR gov't treatment of illegals and their descendants need to stop their hypocracy and take in a percentage of the Haitian refugees.
DR is a small country landwise. If we accept and permit this latest invasion attempt, we will be a minority in our own country within 1 to 2 generations. The Haitian population in DR now represents 25% to 30% of the total population, (descendants included), yet they are producing 50% of all births.
Doesn't take a statistician to figure out where this is going.

As I have mentioned before, we need to concentrate on stopping the illegal migrations at the border, less we have this discussion 10-15 yrs from now not about 417 cases but 3 million more if the illegals already here have just 1 child -( yeah right) .

Right!!! Without Haitians, Dominicans would not eat or have buildings. Most produce picking, construction, and road work is done by Haitians, who are paid half of what Dominicans are paid. They're used as slave labor. Dominicans will not do this work. And Haitian workers have no rights.
I watched the Infiniti Blu development in Sosua refuse to pay Haitian workers before Christmas and Samana Santa holidays, a couple of years ago, so all these families had no money for the holidays. I tried to get the workers to burn tires and HUELGA. The owners of Infiniti Blu suck, as all developers in RD do. Haitians are treated as less than human in RD.

Dominicans MUST WAKE UP AND REALIZE WE ARE UNDER ATTACK and the Dominican MEN must FIGHT BACK!!!!!!!!

It does not matter what we do for Haiti and the Haitians!!! We Dominicans are to blame for all the Haitian problems.

We have few foreign journalists living in DR working for the AP, who are biased and had been hurting us immensely.

In particular Ezequiel Abiu Lopez, and Danica Coto, staying in Puerto Rico. If you research these called" journalists" you can see how biased they are, they are a disgrace to the journalism community.

Phhhhh .... The DR government should get even more wound up about the latest article in the Economist talking in detail about the absurdity of the Haitian descendants being denied citizenship even though they were born, raised and now work in the DR ...

It is garbage policy making in a mean spirited attitude of contempt for DR citizens of Haitian origin.

Oh and YES as a CANADIAN the DR internal citizenship activities represents a genuine act of racism on the part of DR ... the Economist does it's own research and the situation is outrageous!!!
