SANTIAGO- North region business, professional and civic leaders today asked presidents Michel Martelly, of Haiti and Dominican par Leonel Fernandez to promote a joint technological and industrial revolution "which is always buried by the socioeconomic backwardness" they affirm affects both countries’ inhabitants.

Speaking for the organizations, the Council for Regional Development (CRD) said both leaders must implement the production and trade structures urgently needed on both sides of the border, to guarantee that the two Caribbean nations "can be efficiently inserted" to international trade and the high tech economy. “The trained human resources available that haven’t been given the best use need to be taken better advantage of and change the obsolete internal structures trade and policies which have reined over commercial relations between the two sister nations."

In a statement, the CRD added that massive biotechnological and agro-industrial production need to be established, accompanied by a real improvement in the living conditions in the countryside, providing its communities with services to improve the situation of the inhabitants.

((North region wants to bury Hispaniola’s “socioeconomic backwardness"))

For that to happen, Hispaniola needs to bury Jesus first, and makes sure he does not rise up on the 3rd day like last time.

Only then, the North Region will embrace and welcome Hispaniola's "socioeconomic forwardness".

Roy-
Hispaniola MUST start with the other one. Then, the rest should crumble. Yet, my hope is not up.

There's a tremendous source of human power in this region. Anyone with enought capital and assurances from Leonel and Martinelly, that investments won't be trod upon by the military and politicos, can generate billions!...Prosperity can flourish anywhere, given the right ingredients!

backward gene? the only thing backwards in dominican republic is corruption...any strong-willed dominican who has access to education is capable of achieving amazing goals. (I am not talking about music or sport)otherwise, we wouldn´t reach important positions overseas, however, when you are borned into a corrupt enviroment. it stunts .self-improvement...but they say ignorant is a bliss, perhaps that is why it is one of the happiest countries in the world

"when you are borned into a corrupt enviroment. it stunts .self-improvement..."

So true!..As the saying goes..:"you're a product of your environment". We cannot expect knowledge without schooling; Physical prowess without practice and dedication; Prosperity without hard work and planning; Happiness without giving of oneself, etc.
The present political actuality does not allow for any of these to flourish...How can we change it!?

To be honest, I don t think there is a short-term solution...unless goverment is willing to implement effective educational systems where inrreponsible parents should be arrested if they don t send their kids to school. (militaries schools to prevent any deliquency act ). Also easy access to food and medicine, Goverment should invest on their citizens and eventually the country will prosper.. I am pretty sure that the politic who achieve these goals. People will love him as long as he lives.I remember the days when my beloved mother used to take the TV away from me until I finished my home work. At first I was mad at her, over the time I learned it was for my own good. I have done the same with my kids, as a result, my daughter is 15 years old and her last year of high school is almost complete..as for my son...he is very good at school too...If we all could do that. we would add a building block to the fortification of our beloved nation

"Goverment should invest on their citizens and eventually the country will prosper.."

Yes indeed, Honest! The bigger problem, (as you pointed out), is that the parents, who had no education themselves to speak of, do not take the initiative to force education on their children!

The solution, by default, rests on the government to enforce school attendance by fining or jailing parents who are lax about schooling.
But that takes a lot of money and resolve which the present govt. has none of...Alas!

HONEST,
"one of the happiest countries in the world"?
The people I see in the slums don't look to happy. Those begging on the streets don't look exactly joyous to me. I'm not sure if those risking their lives in a yola on the Mona Passage are having a ball, and I doubt if those being robbed at gunpoint, and even shot or machete'd are laughing much. Bars on windows and verandahs, barbed-wire fences and razor-wire topped high walls are for decoration?
