NEW YORK.- Dominican Republic president Leonel Fernandez on Wednesday affirmed that unstable food and crude prices have sparked concerns, political unrest and a problems of nourishment insecurity among millions of people around the world.

Speaking in an United Nations panel on the topic, the chief executive said the 2008 global crisis unleashed spiraling food and petroleum prices, whose impact reached its maximum level in the summer of that year, when it was felt around the world.

He said though not with the same intensity, the phenomenon repeats itself, creating jittery markets, which leads to a volatile ambiance in food prices and together with higher inflation, fiscal deficits and the currency devaluation, have impacted the macroeconomic stability of many countries. "As a result of that situation nearly 150 million people more, in addition to the 925 million who’ve already suffered the effects of hunger around the world in 2009."

"A hungry man is an angry man and has caused that more than 60 nations around the world were affected with revolts, causing political instability as well," the chief executive said in a statement issued by the National Palace.

Fernandez added that problem puts the accomplishments of the millennium development goals at risk, as well as the advances in the reduction of poverty.

Stable-food prices?
You should not own a horse if you are worried about the price of chaff.
How about dealing with the main culprit, population explosion, in your own county first, Leo?

Unstable food prices lead to turmoil, Fernandez warns.

And 8 years of your inept government has led us to be one of the lowest rated, in all the important categories, of 141 countries. Thanks.

Why worry about food prices ? Jonathan Swift had "A Modest Proposal" to remedy the problem.

The social problems of the world cannot be resolved with just talk, it needs action.

At the same time Leo allows this to happen ---------->Top official says fuel prices to stay put, even with lower crude

Very radical proposal, zooma,
It will never work.
Still "talk" has problems too - it requires some effort, someone else listening, and can be dangerous. My preference is for private wishful-thinking, otherwise known as "prayer".

Lie-onel gets Slapped for his BS theatre!

"Serulle says that Fernández proposal to the UN is "theater"

"The presidential candidate of the Frente Amplio, Julián Serulle, today urged President Leonel Fernandez to put into practice in the Dominican Republic the proposal he presented to the United Nations (UN) to reduce the prices of food and avoid speculation."

"Serulle said that Fernández in the nearly 12 years which he has ruled the country he has not implemented a single measure to develop domestic production and has abandoned the agricultural producers."

"Has he promoted policies so that fields are planted and producing with technology?, he asked, stating afterwards that all the president is doing "is nothing more than a theatre".

So this country can't grow enough to feed itself? When you take out loans just to put food on the table, you should know you're in trouble, and not keep having more kids.

ohhhvictor, asks
"If you plan to go to samana using the new autopista de Coral.."

We drove up this new road some weeks ago, and around the new Samana Peninsula scenic route (still to be completed) then wrote a very glowing report on it here in Dominican Today on our return. It seems posters only notice when I say something critical about this country, and not when I pay complements, which I have done on a number of occasions.

ohhhvictor,
When you are there, take a horse-ride to the El Lemon waterfall for a cool swim. Also Rincon Beach at the end of the peninsula is beautiful. Samana township is also very nice. There are some excellent B & B's in Las Tarrenos if you are staying overnight.
The tourist drive has some good scenic lookout points, but unfortunately no parking or picnic facilities. Maybe it's not safe to stop too long there.
