Santo Domingo.- Public Health minister Bautista Rojas yesterday said the resurgence of cases of cholera in the town Tamboril, Santiago stems from a sewer pipe rupture which contaminated the water supply.
He said the problem was already solved, though patients continue streaming to area hospitals with diarrhea, a symptom he affirms is characteristic of the disease. “Tamboril’s entire aqueduct is being disinfected and we’re willing to remain there until there’s a total halt.”
Rojas said health personnel have worked in Tamboril for nine days -all diarrhea cases- treated as cholera since November 2010. ”More than 200 people with diarrhea have been treated in that town since Wednesday and before that 13 others with symptoms were hospitalized yesterday, but are in stable condition.”

There has been also a case in la Romana where an old woman died not realising that her diarreha was probably associated with cholera and so did not seek medical assistance ..so sad and unnecessary
There are no real details on this matter as to the proximity of the sewerage pipe to that of the water supply. That is to say did the black water infiltrate a well or did it enter an aqueduc though a fault in its delivery system ?
It is good the officials found the source. However, what actions are the authorities taking to treat the black water to eradicate the pathogen ?
It would be wise for the authorities to issue a boil water proclamation to the residents at least for the time being, until they feel comfortable the water supply has flushed the pathogen from its system.
But the METRO is the prority!
