Santo Domingo.- The country’s top cement maker Cemex Dominicana is conducting a pilot project to build 330 houses available at a 15% lower cost than in the current real estate market.

Quoted by hoy.com.do, Cemex Dominicana director Carlos González said the company aims to motor socially oriented housing, for which offered its experience and high quality products at the disposal of developers and promoters.

“Our interest is to work hand in hand with promoters and builders to channel resources, technology and technical knowledge to develop housing of a social interest through alliances, providing advice, experience and by introducing constructive systems and financial formulas to benefit developers as the final buyer, promoting the construction of viable communities with more accessible housing which bolster the community’s quality of life,” González said.

He said Cemex is currently building a housing project in San Pedro de Macorís, to showcase a proposal of a viable community, developed for families of low income.

The executive said the urban planning model goes beyond the mere construction of houses since it integrates the basic services to achieve a better standard of living. “The project which we’ve called Altos del Higuamo is developed with an industrialized, accelerated construction system, with the advantages of a highly optimized constructive process that lowers waste and standardizes quality, as well as a faster execution that leads to lower costs.”

Good news.

WE need many more similar projects. The Housing situation is ONE of the most entrenched Legacy problems facing our country.

Interesting article that hides so much more.
CEMEX trying to use other people's money to trial test reduction of waste, reduction that will save CEMEX money.

It doesn't mention the economic slowdown coming in the near future that will be freezing and hurting housing in the DR. No matter, as long as developers get stuck with unsellable housing while CEMEX gets the money first, who cares, jajajaja, a really contemporary dominican trait that one.

CEMEX dreams of making housing developers debt-slaves and, who knows, maybe even start a little housing bubble like in Spain, US, Canada, Australia, jajajaja, housing bubbles that have crashed or are in the way of crashing mightily.

Dream on CEMEX, DR is too little a banana republic to make it a worthwhile bubble where you'll make any worthwhile killing. Move to China. Quick, they're housing bubble is about to burst.

It would be just great if someone had the capital and incentive to create a modular home program, sort of a downsized trailer home concept. The home would be of a wire mesh concrete construction, two rooms and a bath, complete plumbing and wiring, and a kitchen nook with stove and refigerator. They would also have the ability to have additional modular room additions attached if needed. The units would be manufactured at one site and be trucked to its permanent location. All that would be needed to be provided at the final site would be preconstruction of a concrete slab to accept the unit and connections to water, sewer, and power sources.

No mention of being earthquake and mud-slide ready, or portability to move from one unsuitable squatter site to the next.

Totally concur. This "green" modular home concept is right on...but we know politics and bullshit rule the world....great observations though!

Cemex should build hospitals so people do not have to wait online and all the doctors, dentist and medical professionals UASD pumps out annually have a place to work. Just keep the government out if it so hiring can be based on merit not cronyism

For the cost of one worthless government deputy minister they could employ dozens more new medical graduates.
