Santo Domingo.- Public Health minister Bautista Rojas on Monday called teenage pregnancy Dominican Republic’s worst epidemic, which he said will increase maternal mortality, and called it an illness in which poverty plays a role.

He said the problem must be dealt with sex education in schools, to break the taboos on the issue and stressing the importance of teaching adolescents to delay their first intercourse. "These pregnancies also increase the risk of abortions, hypertension and what’s most unfortunate reproduces poverty."

Interviewed on the "Despertador" TV, the official said the poorest adolescents are more likely to become pregnant, because families with better economic positions are not only better educated, but better informed on how to protect adolescents.

"However we don’t want to tell the poor: look use condoms, pills, you have to avoid pregnancy. So I think that's part of the inequality we have in the educational system, inequality which we have from the cultural point of view."

young ladies and girls.
do u really want to bring your baby into a life of poverty?
no chance at getting a real education?
walking the steets when they get older looking for a job in the dr.?
just ask your friends who have babies where the father is today and are they getting money from. him?
they say they dont want to tell u about this but iam telling you just think before u jump in the sack. are the fathers going to help support the baby?

forget the guys in the fancy big suv's they are not going to give u his car only they want the sex and when they are finshed with you they go find other young girl and forget about u and your baby who will suffer for its whole life.
u want to ruin your life then do it but dont ruin your babies life. nevcer will it have a chance in life only it will be treated as a slave in the dr. for the rich.

Teresita and Luisito are also victims of a reality revealed by the Study on Abuses of Minors, registered in 11 branches of the Office of the Prosecutor, conducted by UNICEF, which found that 3,683 cases of abuse of 11 to 17 year old minors were notified in just six months last year.
.

“When she (her mother) comes to me to talk about the things I do to make money, I put the money in her hand and right away she laughs, then, she tells me, daughter be careful, but she already has hers. If I don’t bring her anything, we don’t do so good,” Yulissa tells UNICEF.

Teresita’s story is just as heart wrenching. She lives in Santo Domingo, and at 13, already maintains her seven month old baby. “The say of this country forces women to throw themselves to the street. In this country there are no men because what the few that there are do, is get little girls pregnant. My grandmother is 38, she had my mother when she was almost 15. My mother had me at 11 and she is now 24 years old

Condoms, contraceptive pills and injections are provided free by the government. Even the most uneducated adolescent girls know this. Why then don't they use them? Ask the Catholic and Evangelical churches!

Implanon, made by Organon International, is a single-rod long acting reversible hormonal contraceptive subdermal implant that is inserted just under the skin of a woman's upper arm. The 4 cm by 2 mm Implanon rod contains 68 milligrams of etonogestrel (a progestin) which is released over a three year period. Because of cases of incorrect insertion by medical personnel in the UK, Implanon has been replaced by Nexplanon, which is identical except that it is radiopaque so X-ray radiography can be used for location, and it has a pre-loaded applicator for easier insertion.

Peak serum etonogestrel concentrations have been found to reach 781–894 pg/mL in the first few weeks, gradually decreasing to 192–261 pg/mL after 1 year, 154–194 pg/mL after 2 years, and 156–177 pg/mL after 3 years, maintaining ovulation suppression and contraceptive efficacy. Implanon may be removed at any time, but must be removed after at most three years.

Implanon was first approved for use in Indonesia in 1

Editor,
I understand its a library photo, but neither the girl or the setting look remotely Dominican. Couldn't you find something that looks more like an uneducatable feral peasant-girl in a shanty-hut on the banks of the Ozama Rover, with a portrait of the good cardinal and the blessed virgin Mary on the wall, and maybe the biological father leaving in his new SUV with his new even younger girlfriend?

Holy cow!.. I know the girl in the pic... she gave birth already (about 3 years ago) to a healthy baby boy... she was 19 though, not sure if that qualifies for teenage pregnancy.. I would say that number would be anything below 16-17.

Immigration of poor ppl from other countries is good. It brings a lot of positives and knowledge. New inventions, engineering projects and a lot of green for the country. On top of it all instead of going to school little girls have sex for money and make more futureless babies.

Great formula!!

So what's the solution? None other than education. I'm loath to take a position whereby society dictates who and who should not have children and how many. That's a personal individual decision.

Roy,

I guess the point is that there are options, 3 year options available. In the main, the problem is one of low expectations from a large section of the poor population and the predatory males that feast at the banquet of poverty and illiteracy. So long term the solutions are: more and better educational opportunities, stiffer and more enforcement of the law against the predators, and adult, parental education in the harmful outcomes these early pregnancies carry for their young daughters. Others can suggest their solutions, but until and unless Dominicans see through better educational opportunities and drive home the need for deferred gratification, little will change.

The saddest thing is that dominican women are really precious and beautiful, they don't realise their own value.

Woman's "secret garden" has no value for a true man, so selling it to a pendejo for few pesos or gifts ( he will dump you and have child with another woman anyway : one told me " we have so much women that we don't know how to deal with it " ) or an almost dead foreigner is a waste.

Most of the women in the DR streets have childs by natives who don't take their responsibilities, so they go to the "quick money earning" thing and finally many are trapped in the system.

True story: I used to know a guy in the North Coast, he has a child with a woman who walks with gringos from the US. She has a gringo novio from Florida who sends her money every month and he also bought for her una pasola (used by her dominican BF, to "work" as a motoconcho) .

So the gringo maintains the chica (he will marry her), and the BF, the latter has no problem with that ! WTF !!!

Sorry to have to inform you that waaaaaaaaaaaay before DR existed men have been keeping a precious rose or two aside. And in the States, it also happens. Not for 250$ a month, but plenty of good looking chics have their sugar daddy paying for expenses. Many high income guys keep one on the side but it'll cost you rent, 2,500-5,000, plus other expenses. When Wall Street was running high, plenty of hot chics heading to the gym at 9 and 10 AM. Now a days, many have had to fend for themselves as the gravy train has stop providing the sugar.

In the Latin barrio's it'll cost you far less, say part or full rent, -some I've been told pay for a room in an apt. So some change for the once or twice a week meetings, and some cheap gifts every now and then, and even guys with far less money than the Wall Street crowd get to smell that sweet rose (?) too. LOL

Roy you keep writing about contraception being free for the population but that is not true ,In fact it is quite the opposite ...The government has fallen in line with the Catholic Church which frowns on the use of condoms . Also , the episcopal church and the evangelical churches DO support safe sex so do not blame them .
I totally agree with the Health Minister ,,,but in the schools sex and hygene and common disease are NOT taught .As you I have been teaching in 2 schools for years and I have taken it on myself to have classes on the problems of infections , the differences between viruses and bacterium , the need to keep your personal parts very clean , even if the water being used is dirty and the importance of safe sex ..I have not been stopped so far ,,but I amazed at the ignorance of children of 16 to 19

EDUCATION!!!!!!!!!! 25 diseases you can besides aids.........

los tigures and the rap culture .pants down young men are the problem....

it takes two to make a baby

make laws that the father can be held responsible for the well being and finance for the baby

broken promises = broken dreams

when i first went to the DR in 91 it was a sign of machoness to brag about how many kids you have and the culture of that mind set continues...........

"make laws that the father can be held responsible for the well being and finance for the baby"

Such laws already exist in the Dominican Republic but they are rarely if ever enforced. Many of these abandoned mothers know about it but do not pursue it in the courts.

I know four women living in Puerto Plata having an extremely difficult time.
They aren't minors they are women.
All four had children after they were 18 yrs. and never married.
So the problem isn't just with the minors.

Many times these women and children don't have food to eat.
Each one of these women have three children by various Dominican men..
Not one of the fathers are supporting these twelve (12) children.
They just walked away or made excuses why they can't help with their children.
These fathers then go and make more babies with other women.
Contrary to what people say none of these fathers are Foreigners.

Who is suffering the most in this situation, the children.
I asked these women why did they have these children.
The response has always been some variation of; contraceptives are viewed as a sin.
So I am not sure education will correct this problem.

Adolescentes y jovens, SIDA son verdadero.
Usted tiene que proteger a usted mismo, llevar un condón.
