Santo Domingo.- President elect Danilo Medina on Monday said the incoming Administration aims to develop an ambitious plan with the World Food Program (WFP) to improve the quality of school breakfasts and nutrition public schools students and residents in the country’s rural areas.

Medina met with WFP executive director Ertharin Cousin in his political office in the sector Bella Vista, where they discussed the possibility of designing an international agreement between that agency and the Education and Public Health ministries, to surmount the hurdles to nutrition affecting the school population and a high percentage of Dominicans in the countryside.

“We’re committed to work jointly with the authorities on the Scholastic Nutrition and Infant-maternity Health programs during the first 1,000 days and work to reduce anemia in the Dominican Republic,” Cousin said.

Excellent news and hopefully this project gets positive results. Good nutritious meals are necessary for a healthy growing person in school. Heck for everyone! But growing minds, think pre-natal care also needs a great deal of attention. Along with the first few years of life, these are the critical periods for brain development. So yes, the meals in schools, but remember the ones before that stage are critical, too.

This a National embarrassment!

After 12 years in Power and Building a Billion Dollar Plus Useless METRO, the Narco PLD asks for handouts to build a School Breakfast program in country that has ALL the conditions to be self-sufficient in the production of ALL its nutritional needs and have enough left over to export!

A FAILED NARCO STATE!

"Dont you see the elect president is doing an honest effort"

Do you have psychological x-ray vision to categorical state an "honest" effort?

“and instead of eoncouraging it”

He is something that I would be willing to “ENCOURAGE” Santo Danilo to do:

The President elect of the Dominican Republic has stated that his First Executive Order after being sworn in on August 16th 2012, he will be to bring International Accounting experts to audit ALL government accounts as far back as records are available to recoup all stolen funds and assets from whom EVER has taken them!

“Doing What Has Never Been Done/ Hacer Lo Que Nunca Se Ha Hecho,” like he promised!

Now that would really be "EXCELLENT NEWS!"

The food they bring to the schools if far from being nutritional milk that has been the problem of many poisonings and a little cake made with white flour. No vegetables or fruit from a tropical country. As far as anemia that is caused by all the aluminum cooking pots when they had iron pots they did not have anemia. Anemia is normally caused by a lack of iron in the diet. If the government whats to help give the poor iron cook ware or make it possible to buy.

Many times I have written that a big incentive for kids to attend school is the two meals that they will get while in school, which sometimes are the only ones.
No one can study with an empty stomach, and the breakfasts and lunches have to be nutritionally sound, and appetizing as well for the next generation.

"like Atabey, celebrating handouts, and having foreigners showing you how to do things that all self respecting adults should be able to do for themselves."

I don't see why a "handout", once in a while, can be a bad thing. Nor do I turn away the chance to get it.. Self-respect means admitting/realizing limits in one's abilities and actual resources, and gracefully accepting anyone's help in "showing me how to do things", thereby improving our lot in life.

In the case of our republic, we're in no shape to let our foolish pride intervene with the potential long-term benefit to our children's health and scholastic future...Whoever or whatever is/means good for us, regardless of it's size or source, should be welcomed and thanked for their charity and good will.

Thank you, Ms. Ertharin Cousin. I know most of us are grateful for your charitable contributions to our children's well-being and future!.. Gracias de todo corazon!

Batty Boy Dready is at it again.

Seems he has NEVER heard of school breakfast and lunch. LOL

Of course, if these are offered in J or any other nation state worthy of the name, then it's alright. But if DR wants to create such a system, it's "celebrating handouts, and having foreigners showing you how to do things that all self respecting adults should be able to do for themselves."

Really?

"Food service programs have long been recognized as important components of education in the American schools. "You can't teach a hungry child" has been an accepted principle since the early years of the country, when children were expected to bring lunches from home to get them through the day. However, not all children were able to do so because of financial and other circumstances. In addition, the food brought from home was often lacking in nutritional quality and desirability, and the schools usually lacked the facilities to store milk and other perishable food products.

At the same time, food supplies in this country have usually been abundant and, at least during recessionary periods, in excess of market demands.

Particularly during the 1930s, farmers faced extremely low prices and excess food supplies while people were literally starving. Children were perceived as being in critical need of food support. To solve both problems, the Congress passed Public Law 74-320, authorizing the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to purchase surplus agricultural commodities and distribute them to needy families and specifically to school lunch programs. At the same time, the Works Progress Administration (WPA), established in 1935, provided labor and trained supervisory personnel for staffing school lunch program on a national scale.

Early Lunch Programs

Precedents for school lunch programs date back to the mid-nineteenth century in England and western Europe. In 1849, school canteens were established in France, and in 1866 the Destitute Diner Socie

in 1866 the Destitute Diner Society was established in London. By the beginning of the twentieth century, most western European countries had national laws or extensive municipal legislation providing for school meals.

In 1853, the Children's Aid Society of New York served food to all children who attended its industrial schools, which later became public schools. Serving food became an inducement to children from the slums to attend school. In the economic downturn of 1893, the problem of hungry school children came to public attention. The conviction arose that children in a weak physical and mental state resulting from poverty learned little or nothing at school.

The Star Center Association began school food service in Philadelphia elementary schools in 1894. In 1909, the Philadelphia Board of Education took over all school food service in secondary schools, making Philadelphia the first large city to establish central food control.

School lunch programs increased rapidly in the 1920s, as new knowledge of nutrition led to greater concern for the health of children. As a result, the purpose of school food service broadened from provision for the needy and undernourished to provision for all children who need food at school.

The National School Lunch Program

During World War II, many U.S. draftees were found to be malnourished to such an extent that they were turned down for military service. The realization of this low nutritional state of the general population led to the passage of the National School Lunch Act (NSLA) in 1946, which established the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) in elementary and secondary schools. This landmark legislation, although amended many times, continues in force today, with its original objectives still in place. These objectives are "to safeguard the health and well-being of the Nation's children, and to encourage the domestic consumption of nutritious agricultural

In this world, no one is truely "independent". We all depend on one another for all the basic, and not so basic, needs in our life.
Accepting help does not diminish us, on the contrary, it strengthens our bonds and our abilities to do things. As the saying goes:" Anyone can do anything, but one can't do it alone".

BACKGROUND OF SCHOOL FEEDING IN JAMAICA

In 1976, the Ministry of Education, with assistance from the USAID PL 480 Programme, introduced the Patty/Milk Programme. The Nutrition Products Centre, at Marcus Garvey Drive, was charged with the responsibility of preparing lunches for - 60,000 children in the corporate area.

Distribution of the products was done by using government owned and equipped trucks especially purchased for this purpose. The Patty and Milk Programme came to an end in the early eighties (1980's) . Schools in the rural area were given commodities to prepare meals and serve directly to the children.

In 1984 with the assistance of the World Food Programme, introduced the Nutribun/Milk Programme as a Pilot Project. This pilot targeted 14,500 beneficiaries in St. Thomas and Trelawny. In 1985 they aimed at feeding 95,000 students in Primary, All-Age , and new Secondary Schools. The programme was later expanded to feed 150,000 students in recognized Basic, Infant,

BACKGROUND OF SCHOOL FEEDING IN JAMAICA

The preparation of lunches in schools dates back to 1926, when it was financed by a group of charitable persons within the corporate area.

Governments'participation began in 1939, in a limited number of schools. This scheme was expanded in 1955, with the aid of food commodities from sources
within the United States of America, when a central kitchen was set up in the corporate area to supply hot lunches to approximately 30 children.

The main point YOU SEEM to have forgotten is:

Why on earth would feeding poverty stricken children two nutritious meals per day be harmful for the child and nation-state?

It's well documented that poor nutrition IS BAD for learning. It's also an accepted fact that there are many poor children in DR. How on earth would feeding these children good food be DETRIMENTAL TO THEIR HEALTH AND EDUCATION?

BTW, if done correctly, this school lunch program could stimulate agricultural production in the DR. Getting the DR to produce more food for its own people is a wise and confidence building option.

The recently installed Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Justice, Mariano German, has given himself a salary increase at a time when most of the judges in the judicial system are complaining of their low salaries. German raised his salary by a little over RD$86,000 a month to RD$423,000. The increase alone is more than 14 minimum wages. In January, Mariano German, according to El Caribe, received the same salary as the outgoing Chief Justice, Jorge Subero Isa, RD$336,960. However, in May the new salary of RD$423,000 was reported. Danilo Medina meets with WFP head

President-elect Danilo Medina announced yesterday, Monday 11 June that together with the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) he proposes to develop and implement an ambitious plan aimed at improving the quality of the school breakfast and the nutrition levels of the students who attend public schools and the residents of the rural areas of the country.

Medina held a meeting with WFP executive director Ertharin Cousin at his political office on Sarasota Avenue, where they discussed the idea of drawing up an agreement with the ministries of Education, and Public Health, to overcome the nutritional difficulties that affect the school population and a high percentage of Dominicans who live in the countryside.

"THE PROBLEM IS THAT THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC IS AMONG THE COUNTRIES DEFINED AS MIDDLE-INCOME, AND THAT IT IS NOT LISTED AMONG THE COUNTRIES ELIGIBLE TO RECEIVE INTERNATIONAL AID FOR THIS PURPOSE," SAID MEDINA.
