Santo Domingo.- The Ministry of Labor concluded a series of activities held across the country aimed at raising public awareness of the need to eradicate child labor. The closing ceremony took place at the capital’s Plaza Güibia on Friday with hundreds of children in attendance.

The events were organized in commemoration of the International Day Against Child Labor, June 12th. It is estimated that 12% of children in the Dominican Republic are in work. Although still high, this figure is a 6% reduction compared to 2000, according to the ministry.

Some 304,000 children are forced to work, and the country has signed international agreements aimed at reducing this to zero by 2020.

Deputy Labor Minister Félix Hidalgo, coordinator of the Child Labor Eradication Program, says that the country is on track towards ending child labor, even though only eight years remain for meeting this target. He bases his optimism on the great strides made in this area over the last few years and on president-elect Danilo Medina’s pledge to extend the school day.

I see all the Haitian kids selling crap at the trafic lights, all over; if we pick up these kids and put them on the other side of the border together with their parents, those numbers wuold be even smaller.

where the hell are the parents of these shoe shine kids?
where is the dr government who also has a responsibility for these kids.
yes they have to give these kids some form of and formal education, give them the chance of growing up to become responsible members of society and to be able to earn a living and be part of the human race.
maybe the education will help them know the right and wrong in this world thing to do. at least then they might have a small chance and it might be small but its a chance we all take in this life.

It shouldn't take eight years if the agency were to be administrated the right way.The Government needs restructuring from the top down, no one knows what they are supposed to do

For starters, GPS ALL government vehicles, government cellphones and government contractors, then create a department just to track TIME and DILIGENCE so that the careless sloths are weeded out.

Its seems the government forgot the value of time and tax payers monies.

Anything that the government wants to accomplish it can. Unfortunately, the government never seems to have the will necessary to accomplish anything other than to fill their pockets.

Send out a squad of inspectors and FINE the crap out of these employers and if their political friends come between so as to prevent the government from enforcing the law, Strip that person of every government perk given to that person and assign that person to a supervised clerks position.
