San Juan de la Maguana, Dominican Republic.-President Danilo Medina on Monday said he doesn’t want an Administration where people live in golden cages on an empty stomach.
The president, speaking in San Juan to inaugurate the 2012-2013 school year, affirmed that he wants to work for the youth and create wealth, but said it cannot be done as pledged in his campaign because the pace of government works is set according to the funds available.
During the ceremony in the San Juan Provincial Development Council, Medina revealed the 10 priority projects yet to accomplish, works he affirms will raise the people’s economic conditions.
"I want a people with decent work, people who have health, a town where every man and every woman can educate their children, I want to have work for the youth, create wealth in San Juan province."
He said San Juan doesn’t want to continue rated among Dominican Republic’s five poorest provinces, or keep hearing that poverty affects 83% of the population.
The Head of State added that talk of growth and a modernized country cannot continue if people can’t become modernized.

Thats the right attitude at least. One thing that I did not care too much about Leonel was that he was into "appearances". What good is a nice hotel when the entire infrastructure around it is crumbling down??? As far as the Metro goes...well one can argue some benefits, but clearly there are MANY other things that take priority over a Metro. Leonel was obsessed with the Dominican Republic being a "mini New York" (figures). But guess what?? The reason New York and other USA cities (there are others) are they way they are is because they were built with progress in mind from the ground UP, not from the lobby outwards. It may take longer to do it right, and it might not look as nice or jevi or futuristic or whatever, but guess what that is the ONLY WAY to do it correctly. I only hope that Danilo realizes the inherent failure that accompanies the vain pursuit of impressive appearances and isn't afraid to get down and dirty and help the people on the street level...
From: United States, Earth
(continued)....and stop trying to impress other Nations and other people with big projects, fancy bridges and luxury hotels, because guess what Leonel YOU DID NOT FOOL ANYONE!!! EVERYBODY still knows that the Dominican Republic is still a developing Country that has come a LOOOONG way, but still has a way to go. Danilo needs to give everybody a slap in the face and wake people up. Put down your BB, stop window shopping at the Blue Mall and start building a future that starts with EDUCATION, HEALTH, INFRASTRUCTURE and developing a new cultural rejection of CORRUPTION. EVERYTHING ELSE IS VANITY. The world loves the Dominican Republic for what it IS, a beautiful, culturally rich Island of sincere and vibrant people. What needs to go is the corruption on a PERSONAL level. There are some things that should be impossible to buy. As long as everything can be bought for a price, the future is bleak. Haitians will continue to come, the poor will get poorer and ignorance will flourish.

Say it ain’t so, Kingsbridge!
A Bronx Little League team cheated to win its district championship, Manhattan coaches claim — marking the second time that the league has been accused of foul play in recent years.
Kingsbridge Little League President Chris Navarro is under investigation for putting in ringers, players from traveling leagues who weren’t part of the regular season.
Critics say the strikes against the team of 11- and 12-year-olds especially shame the district — which was rocked by scandal a decade ago when it was proved that star pitcher Danny Almonte had lied about his age.
DANNY BOY: Danny Almonte scandalized the Kingsbridge Little League in 2001 as a too-old ringer. The league now faces a similar furor.

That's the bit I don't like! Medina has been a part of the administration for a long time so should have been fully aware of the funds available. Basically he is saying his election pledges were false because the funds are not there to carry them out as he had stated. He must have known that was the case but made the pledges anyway. The same applies to the "pace at which government works". He knows that as well.
This sounds like a backtrack on election promises based on "thing outside my control" but in reality areas in which he would have been fully aware when he made them!

Beautifully said and worded, Mr. Pierre!
It's great to know that there are contributors on this site with brain and sight. not totally infested with the likes of Dumb-dumb Danny, Jerk-off Josean, and Juan Bobo!
I agree with you on the Metro taking $$$ away from other, (at this time), more important projects, but you know? Sooner or later, it had to be built.
I've recently visited the cities of Bogota and Cali, Colombia. The traffic is nothing but a nightmare!
Cars with either odd or even ending licence plate numbers, can only transit on certain hours of the day. If there were ever cities in dire need of a metro, these are it!
I know some here think this was a waste of good money, but I assure you that the eventual savings in gasoline NOT used to power gas guzzlers and chatarra conchos, will more than pay for this "choo-choo train". Many here simply do not have the foresight/brain size to see beyond what's in front of them. Obviously, are elementary school drop-outs. Tragic!

Dumb-dumb Danny, Jerk-off Josean, and Juan Bobo!
Yet he supports putting our Children’s future on hold by investing their CONSTITUTIONALLY mandated money into some pie in the Sky Hope of alleviating pollution and traffic with a METRO that only services at best 0.5% of the national population; as if the whole country lives in the Capital!
So again, who is the "Dumb Dumb-Jerk Off-Bobo" Tragic elementary school drop-out?
From: United States, Earth
@RonEvane- yea I agree. I had to come one day. But it jus kinda bothers me that it seems to have been another one of the "let's try and give the impression of success while the more important things sit on the back burner" type projects. But what is done, is done. I only hope that Danilo is more concerned with BEING successful in the long run than just APPEARING to be in a short period of time.
@Danny00- I am very much familiar with Dominican culture and they have their good and bad like anyone else.
From: United States, NJ
RoneEvane;
I have been to Bogota,Colombia and it is true what you are saying. They have tried to bring this up numerous time to their central gvt but it gets rejected as it was the Medellin Metro untill Medellin desided to build the white elephant with the provincial's capital and guess what ,Medellin almost goes broke by doing so by themselves.
In DR in the other hand since they don't have propper representation per Provinces and it is a Centralized gvt it was easier to pass it thru the DR congress, been all senators and Deputuies
are appointed by the president, left by Trujillo's regime and they never care to change it as it was prior to him.
DR is not a true Democracy since they don't have provincial elections, therefore have no representation from those provinces. For all we know they are from the Capital and have no connection with the provinces they represent.Even Venezuela has better representation in ther Central Gvt.

Mr.Pierre..It seems to be one of Leonel's knee-jerk reactions in building something with the least bit of planning. It is obvious that he wanted to go down in history as "the man who built the Metro". with little concern for education, health care, and/or decent housing, etc. But you know, in retrospect, the almost one billion invested, so far, in this thing, IS a blessing in disguise.
When taking into consideration the horrific traffic in SD, one has to wonder if this isn't the wisest thing Leo did in his long tenure.
Last time I checked, regular gasoline was selling for $5.50USD. Couldn't tell you what the oil debt is at the moment, but it's in the billions and increasing exponentially. I say this to highlight the savings an expanded Metro can be for our DeaR. Not to mention safety, less pollution, rapid commuting, and the increased in international commerce.
This Metro will be powered by hydroelectric and save us tons of $$ in oil purchases. The Dummies can't see that.

Well It appears Danilo is no Dummy and has read this report:
So the result of the Latin American and Dominican experiments with Neo-liberal Economic policies are in!
"ACCORDING TO THE UN"
"Dominican Republic is among most unequal countries in Latin America, the urban region in the world"
THEY SAID THAT THE GAP BETWEEN POOR AND RICH IS GROWING IN MANY COUNTRIES IN LATIN AMERICA
Rio de Janeiro
"The gap between rich and poor is increasing in many countries of Latin America, the region more unequal and urbanized planet, where 80 per cent of the population lives in cities, more than one quarter of it in slums or neighborhoods of misery, the UN warned Tuesday."
"Between 1990 and 2009 inequality grew up in Colombia, Paraguay, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Bolivia, Dominican Republic, Argentina and Guatemala, according to a report from UN-Habitat, the United Nations human settlements program."
Continued:

From: United States, Fighting the Dictatorship of the Narco PLD Mafia; Guillermo Moreno President 2016
In the region, considered since the 1970s the most unequal in the world, 20% of the richest sector of the population has on average a per capita income nearly 20 times higher than the income of the poorest 20 per cent.
"The main challenge is how to combat the huge inequalities that exist in the cities." "It is a very big contradiction of the economic model of Latin America in general," said Erik Vittrup, expert of UN-Habitat.
In the region, the most unequal countries on the basis of the distribution of income are, in this order, Guatemala, Honduras, Colombia, Brazil, Dominican Republic and Bolivia, while less unequal are Venezuela, Uruguay, Peru and El Salvador.
"Income inequality is very high". "There is a considerable lack of employment and an abundant labor informality, which focuses on young people and women," the UN indicates.

Mr. Rancier. A centralized govt. with no provincial say in how income is budgeted, I will agree, can not be a true Democracy. This, I think, is what makes for a bloated bureaucracy with no clear raison d'etre. This type of govt hasn't changed since Trujillo and will continue to sink our economy until it's rid of parasites, botellas and deep corruption.
A democratic capitalist nation, can not function and prosper under these circumstances. It must restructure it's system so that the rest of the country can vote on decisions of any magnitude.
As it is, the best we can hope for is a president that shares the power and money throughout. Let's hope Danilo will see fit to make drastic changes....I'm betting he will.

It was also the right time to build the "white elephant" to go no where,at least it got build partially anyways. The condition were ripped :cheap labor, good loan by the IMF,W/B and the ok from USA.
I said cheap labor because it was mostly build by Haitians to put them to work after the Erthquake
in Haiti, as you know most of them were forced to emmigate to DR.
Same as the Chinese at the West Coast building the continetal rail road in the 1800,at $US 0.25 a day named Coolies The Irish building the NYC subways in the 1900 for US$2.00 a day where they picked up the name of Donkies. LF should be more than glad that the US gave him loans in exchage of Haitians. What is DR to do with such amount of Haitians once this Megga project gets finished? The country is up at US$35,000 millions what they call billions up here and in debt of 40% its (GNP) More loans for more gvt jobs. Another Greece.

Despite advances made in Latin America and the Caribbean in the past 10 years, 124 million people live in poverty in cities, more than half in Brazil (37 million) and Mexico (25 million).
More than one quarter of the urban population, 111 million people, live in slums or villas of misery, a figure greater than 20 years ago, according to the UN.
The number of cities in the region increased six fold in 50 years. Half of the urban population, some 222 million people, living in cities with fewer than 500,000 inhabitants and 14% (65 million people) lives in mega-cities, the report entitled "The State of the cities of Latin America".
THE REPORT NOTES WITH CONCERN THAT LATIN AMERICAN CITIES CONTINUE TO EXPAND PHYSICALLY DESPITE THE DEMOGRAPHIC SLOWDOWN, IN A WAY THAT "IT IS NOT SUSTAINABLE".

"Quisqueya sin Miseria" (Quisqueya without Extreme Poverty) is the social program announced by Danilo Medina in his inaugural speech as President on August 16, 2012. This should be taken as a challenge by all concerned Quisqueyans and friends of the Dominican Republic. This could mark the beginning of creating a broad forum to find ways for elimination of extreme poverty in Quisqueya and also to create conscience about the true and proper name of our country: Dominican Republic of Quisqueya. Let's support the program without ill intentions and malice.

The resentment between our peoples is a product of history not told accurately.
We think we know the fundamental nature of the raison d’être for the war of independence from Haiti.
If we delve and examine suspiciously into history’s telling of our conflict, we will find that during the time of the so called, “Haitian Occupation”, our nations actually prospered under the influence of both, France and Spain. It was not long-lived, pity, but it might have been different if not for Duarte and Co.
Who knows how far we might have gone together, if not for our very different languages…and prejudices.. Alas!

dominican greed and dominicans doing the stupid thing because most of them are very dumb.and getting dumber by the day.
@Danny00- I am very much familiar with Dominican culture and they have their good and bad like anyone else.
Continued:
"There is a considerable lack of employment and an abundant labor informality, which focuses on young people and women," the UN indicates.
continued:
Mr.
(so much for METROS being the saviors)
Continued:
"It is RIDICULOUS to continue proposing urban models (...)" with large housing programs in huge areas (away from the main center) when the advantage of cities is the concentration of citizens, infrastructure and services.”

Why are our people bailing out of haiti by the thousands, going to great length to get away from it as fast as possible to then deny our nationality and call ourselves Dominicans?
Knowing how racist we haitians are,it's a miracle that we elected a mulatto president.
@Haiti4ever.
Sir or Madam. You are beginning to annoy me with your negative rhetoric, and your style of posting takes up too much bandwidth.
You won't get much sympathy with your aggressive and insulting ways. This forum is for discussing DR matters, not for venting your venom against our nation.
Please fall in line with common sense and courtesy. Please.

Express himself like yourself , I will not retaliate against ,
You have absolutely every right to have posted that comment and request ,
but I also must remind that , what you have seen from me is nothing in comparison to the insults your 20 something year old dominican compatriots have been posting about our country .
This is in retaliation , now we Haitians are fighting back more and more .
You didn't disrespect sir , therefore no disrespect will come from me to you .
Going
To the Dominican Republic isn't no " great length " it can be done on foot ,

A Haitian that takes Dominican Citizenship is a shameless Haitian , I d rather become a "Jamaican " citizen or a Somalian citizen than Dominican , because of your mentality and the past .
Just like
A Pakistani would never accept Indian citizenship , they are sw0rn enemies , just like Haitians and Dominicans .
Too bad it doesn't work out between us since we were once "One island " and one nation , it would had been a normal thing for a Haitian to do , but not with the behavior and mentality that your people have
I ve live in Canada , many Haitians are citizens , but not me , I will never do that , but it's not because of shame , there is racism in Canada , like anywhere else on earth , but i can accept a Haitian to become a citizen of Canada , because it's worth it , it s not peanuts . Lots of advantages comes with it .
My son,you said:

Sorry for thinking that you were smarter than you actually are.
Kid,sometimes in the English language, one does not interpret words in a literal way.
I didn't mean length as in "distance",I meant length as in "effort".
For example :"We haitians go to great lengths as to get into debt to come up with bribe money to make it to the DR and to leave our loved ones behind, for a more promising future".
I apologize for sounding condescending, but as a father,it is my duty to educate you.
"A Haitian that takes Dominican Citizenship is a shameless Haitian , I d rather become a "Jamaican " citizen or a Somalian citizen than Dominican , because of your mentality and the past ."
That's a lot of shameless people then,so you better leave your Canadian comfort and take a plane bound to DR.
Make sure to pick up a megaphone on your way to the airport......you have a lot of preaching to do.
I can't do it myself since I'm hellbound,so Godspeed my son,Godspeed!
@Haiti4ever.
Merci monsieur, je l'apprecie!
Alas!
THAT stupid Metro is the MOST IDIOTIC thing EVER build on this country, along with the Columbus Lighthouse...the TRAFFIC JAM Is even worst NOW on Santo Domingo, so there goes your argument...At the End I paid that stupid thing AND NO ONE EVEN ASKED ME, At the end THE ENTIRE EDUCATION BUDGET of AN ENTIRE NATION went to build a Childish dream of Nueva Yol chiquito to fulfill the Moronic views of one of the greatest morons that have ever presided over the DR...do you understand what does it means to a COUNTRY that twice the Money invested to EDUCATE EVERY SINGLE CHILD on this country is BURRIED on something that 99% of the population DOES NOT GET ANY BENEFIT from?? is THAT RATIONAL thinking??
