I had mentioned this, some time back. And right again about some, if not all, elementary school teachers needing to learn how to teach.

Agree with you Dread. This honourable effort will take much longer to accomplish. But it's a start and we must applaud it. Let's hope the students are also fed a good meal. They can't learn on an empty stomach!

Good intentions however, very unrealistic goals. First we must “train the trainers”. Like most projects and proposals in the DR., there is neither a clear concept nor a well defined plan. It is simply political rhetoric to appease the ignorant masses. The number of existing teachers in the DR is not enough to meet this suspense. Furthermore, these are functional illiterate themselves. Besides, the existing infrastructure (schools) cannot support the number of illiterate children in need of a decent education.

I have been talking about EDUCATION as the NUMBER ONE National Priority constantly and consistently form day one at DT, before it was Cool and many of the PURPLE SEALS on DT jumped off the METRO on to the EDUCATION Bandwagon!

However, the Nostalgic Fidelista approach from our former(? )Maoist President I am afraid is just more of a media spectacle to appease and simulate he is actually doing something, rather than the real top to bottom EDUCATIONAL revolution that the country needs.

"Suspense"?...You mean: goal, ambition, intent?..Anyway, you're right. Not enought QUALIFIED teachers! Presumably Cuba has a few we can use. Time for Danilo to take a tour of their (Cuba's) educational system.

Right again. We'll need thousands more school buildings to fill the need and probably more than the 4% of GDP to fulfill this promise of "illiteracy-free territory" by September 2014.
It seems improbable to meet this goal. But, many a difficult challenge begins with good intentions. I like Danilo's positive attitude. Let's give him credit and hope for the best.!

BTW, I'll be in Cabrera by November. I'll be volunteering my time and expertise, in whatever capacity I'm deemed suitable and most helpful.

That may be so, Ingle, but I won't be latching onto any political parties or movements.. It won't matter what they think. The goal is to spread goodwill everywhere.
Priority one is for children to read and write, efficiently and properly.. To also teach them languages, to guide them in the right direction so that they won't end up like Josean. .. To show farmers, et al, better and more efficient farming methods; to extract energy from thrash, vegetation, fecal matter, etc. so that they can become self sufficient in food and energy.
The bottom line is to have our children grow up to be good citizens, better prepared for the future. To have our people gain independence of government handouts and see things, not for what they are, but for what it could be:.. Prosperous!
