Santo Domingo.- The president of Dominican Republic’s major  employers grouped in Copardom) yesterday again affirmed that the Labor Code needs amending.

Jaime Gonzalez called the Labor Code in effect, "one of the business sector’s biggest hurdles to create new jobs, which restricts the freedom of individuals to create a new company."

The Code has been handled improperly by lawyers, which has led many micro-businesses to virtually disappear from a worker’s lawsuit, he said.

"To prevent that situation the article which deals with severance pay should change, not eliminated, but to limit it, so it has a growth of up to five or seven years," the business leader said, in reference to the accumulation throughout a worker’s time on the job.

I totally agree with this change ,,the problems associated with employing people here are mind boggling ..and of course because they are so onerous over a longer time period, employers often only engage for the short term .
And while they are talking about changes, maybe the laws concerning those employees who thieve and still get severance on dismissal can be altered.
