Santo Domingo.- Over the past year, the Public Health Ministry’s various departments and programs have spent RD$1.04 billion to treat 1.8 million patients who come from Haiti to its facilities nationwide.

The funds provided various services, emergencies, registry, lab tests, births, C-sections, teen pregnancy control, major surgery, imagery and transfusions, aside from the around RD$1.92 billion in the cost of drugs, patient transport, and first level vaccination services.

Data from the Ministry’s Planning and Development Dept. show that regional health centers will provide around 1.3 million services to Haitian patients this year, at a cost of RD$1.3 billion, or 10 percent of its budget .

Josean's special on display.

Again, this news just adds to Dominicans worry that their country is fast becoming inundated with Haitian illegal indigents.

Unemployed = go back to Haiti. Once you give birth and few weeks to recuperate and then back to Haiti.

Their own government can not offer them anything, and the little we have we have to share it with these ungreatful people.

For how long are we going to put up with these people, how long?

The people of the caribbean would like to hear it directly from the Dominicans. They, however, never demonstrate that they are willing to answer this question and their silence speaks louder than words. I will, however, ask it again in the hopes of getting an honest Dominican (I said Dominican ) answer. Would you (Dominicans) prefer to have the Haitians on their side of Hispanola, meaning that they would no longer work in your fields and construction sites, no longer receive medical assistance as described by this story, and no longer contribute to the consumption of your goods and services (what they pay for out of their slave wages)? Also, the US$700 Million Dollars or so that they spend on Dominican foodstuff and other goods would vanish as a condition of sending the Haitians back to Haiti; as some of you would seem to prefer. By my calculations, the 1 Billion RD$ of medical assistance spent on the Haitians is in the neighborhood of about US$ 26 Million Dollars or so.

This will make my Dominican friend an ex DR navy sailor happy. He was just shot by bandits in broad daylight while being a customer and has life threatening wounds and the hospital has so far demanded over $20,000 U.S. dollars for care and the care is horrible.

This is f#$@ Unbelievable, a poor country like our cannot continue carrying this burden.

Every peso we spend on these people is money taken away from Dominicans.

Money that can be spent on making the lives of Dominicans better.

This is what the government is doing with my tax money. (((((@$#$%#$@$))))))

Loenel Fernandez, that mother F#@$r is the one who let these people into our country.

The best use of that money would be to deport all those Haitians, and to build a fence on the border.

chilliwestaziz,

With all due respect, your question seem to me a little loaded. To me, you seem to suggest that because Haitians buy our products and are illegally employed in the construction and agriculture sectors, that this should be reasons enough to condone the illegal Haitian immigration. The problem is very simple. The levels of poverty in Haiti are driving Haitians to take their chances in DR, regardless of the promise, or not, of employment. Today, Haiti has an approx. 40% unemployment rate, plus 80% live under the poverty line. These troublesome numbers are compounded when you take into account that, for a couple decades, Haiti has been loosing the means to feed itself. Today, they have to import most of their daily diet. So, the illegal Haitian immigration in Dominican Rep. cannot simply be view as a problem created by greedy and unscrupulous businessmen.

Haitians are buying feom us because we sell stuff cheaper to them than any other nation.

If that is not the case you should suggest to them to buy somewhere else, like Jamaica.

How many surgeons can $1 billion dollar hire? Instead we're forced to dilute the health system with more unspecialized doctors and nurses that just put band aids on wounds and then prescribe aspirin for the pain.

This is the issue at hand:

The government spends RD$1.04 Billion pesos, on Haitian illegals health care.

How many Dominicans are in need of that money?

How many Dominican would benefit if that money is spent on education?

How many Dominicans would benefit if that money is spent on their health care??

How many Dominicans would put food on their tables ??

How many bridges would be build in DR??

How many roads paved??

How many schools build??

How many houses build??

How many hospitals ??

How many Kilo Watt of energy produced??

How many dams build??

How many canals for irrigation??

How many docks??

These are the kind of thing some people don't want to understand.

The Dominican Republic is a very poor country.

We cannot have the luxury of spending that kind of money on the health care of illegal Haitians, while our own people are in need of those funds.

so LF let the Haitians into the DR I thought that the Haitians started coming here in large numbers before LF took office and that the main culprits were the sugar barons and the construction companies that brought the Haitians here almost as slave labour ..In fact it was in the time of LF that there were many buses being seached and undocumented Haitians returned to Haiti .. Anyway now ,the Haitians simply give money to the local police to stay here

No.

The ones who started bringing in Haitians where the US sugar barons, during the ocupation of 1916.

Between, 1916 and Leonel's government, Haitians came by a few thousands, most of whom where repatriated after sugar season was over.

But the massive invation, of Haitians in to our country by the millions, started with and continued thru while Leonel Fernandez Reyna was in office.

But, the past cannot be changed.

However the future is what you want it to be.

This is the future

@Archanel96-"cannot simply be view as a problem created by greedy and unscrupulous businessmen."

Oh really?

How exactly do you think it should be viewed as?

Is not the savage exploitation of human being not considered greedy and unscrupulous?
Do you think dumping heavily subsidized, imported products into Haiti and forcing local Haitians producers out of business, not greedy and unscupulous?

If just these two are not sufficiently good examples of being greedy and unscrupulous, than I don't know what is.

Guillermone,
I think you missed the point to my reply to chilliwestaziz. We (Dominicans) are not the cause of Haitians illegal immigrating into DR. Yes, many are lured by greedy and unscrupulous "Dominican" businessman with a promise of a job. But that does not mean that all illegal Haitians (approx. 1.5-2 million) in Dominican Rep. are working in the construction and/or agriculture sectors. The main reason behind the illegal immigration of Haitians is the current levels of poverty in Haiti, which can be trace to many historical, political, social, environmental and economic factors. Haiti's situation was not created overnight nor by us (Dominicans). I hope this helps clarifies my previous post.

Adding to Arcangel96's comment.

And since the problems in Haiti were created by Haitians,

You go and solve your own problems in your own country, not in ours.

As long as Haitians keep running from their problems in Haiti, the result will always be the same.

Poverty and despair, or running to DR, to be despised, and mistreated.

Because Haitians refuse to take responsibility for their own fate.

Bitterness, strive and discontent is already growing steadfast among Dominicans, concerning the Haitian illegals.

The news about DR government spending RD$1.04 Billion in health care for Haitians, in a poor country like ours, is adding to the furnace.

Sooner than later, violence is going to occur, something that can be avoided now,

by regulating Haitian illegal migration to DR.
