Santo Domingo.- Haiti's embassy announced Wednesday that Dominican Republic’s Foreign Ministry issued 699 work visas, of the 770 passports which Ambassador Fritz Cineas had submitted around two weeks ago.

He said the Dominican visas and Haitian passports were issued at no cost by the two governments under the agreement to resolve the problem that surged after 1,080 Haitian immigrants were halted from crossing the border into Dajabón, after spending the Christmas holidays in their country.

"Dominican President Danilo Medina promised ambassador Cineas to issue instructions in this regard during the meeting granted to the head of the diplomatic delegation in Haiti on January 9," it said.

It adds that the action by Dominican Foreign minister Carlos Morales on Tuesday fulfills the Dominican government’s pledge, to deliver to the head of Haiti’s diplomatic mission in Santo Domingo, the 699 passports duly stamped with work visas: "Business Visa for multiple work (NMI)," valid for one year.

It's only work visas, guys. I'd understand the concerns if they were actually being granted citizenship, but that's fortunately not the case. If these guys have work visas then they can't be exploited. This means fairer job opportunities for Dominicans since they won't have to worry about having their jobs taken by illegal Haitians who work under slave wages. On a more optimistic note, I see this action as an advent to stronger and more thorough border control policies. Hopefully Medina will now work on flushing out all the illegals Haitians from the DR, and only allowing those with visas to cross DR's borders. He should also work on building a huge wall and motte at DR's borders while he's at it.
