AnthonyC, brings a good point. It got me thinking, why haven't the donors given more tangible aid to Haiti? I was reading that the Pentagon turned around and gave a bill to the US State Department for sending soldiers to Haiti after the earthquake (soldiers who I heard only handed out sandwiches and water). Of course, there were some military hospitals that did quite a bit to help the effort. The funny thing is that the money the US State Dept. reimbursed to the US military was added to the aid relief money that the US keeps hyping about. That is deceptive!

They should have donated house building material to Haiti and allow the Haitians to build their own residences. They are expert builders; just take a look at what they do around the DR. Bags of cement, plywood, nails, 2 x 4's, galvanize sheets, and other tools and the Haitians would no longer be living in tents.

Well, Danilo, building houses isn't exactly done for free nowadays (not even if these end up being rundown bohios). Chilli is right in the sense that they already have the labor and the know-how, what is lacking there are the construction companies willing to advance the big bucks. Perhaps Odebrecht could be "persuaded" of pioneering there as part of their deals here?

When all the houses are built in a year or two, what then!?

Set up some sweatshops to build exportable goods and the houses will come later.

Are all the house need in DR already built? in France? In Germany? In The USA?

Do construction workers eat? Do they get sick or hurt? do they wear clothes? Don't they need transportation?

Won't those workers want homes? Won't those who are successful want bigger and or better homes?

Construction is one of the major economic drivers in any economy.

Just a ship load of Saws, Hammers and Nails. The Brits landed in what is now the USA with pretty much the same thing and look how that ended up.

Fore, ah the game of golf, lots of caddies available for employment once they get the 18 holes cleared up. I would think the expense might take the major part of what Sean is getting ponied up. The majority of the Haitian population still lives in the countryside, which makes them "feral peasants" by default, while the majority of our population lives in the urban centers, mainly Santo Domingo, Santiago and La Romana, which means in other words, that there are campos that barely have people living in them, specially on our impoverished southwest. Plus, even the lefty club called the UN recognizes that the DR birthrates are just above the replacement level, while the Haitian ones still surpass these by a mile, despite the heavy mortality rates at birth and shorter life expectancy in general.
