Santo Domingo.- National District Appellate Court judge on Monday announced his resignation alleging the need to pursue a better income as a lawyer.
Manuel Ulises Bonelli said after 15 years on the bench, he seeks a better economic situation for his family, especially his three children and regrets not getting a wage increase since 2007, except for a "small adjustment" when Supreme Court Chief justice Mariano German was inducted.
He said Court of Appeals judges currently earn RD$125,000 (US$3,048) monthly after taxes, while the law prohibits them from doing any other work, except teaching.
"I hold on to the hope that the Judicial Council later finds a solution to this situation because, as you know, there’re other cases of judges who’ve already jumped ship for similar reasons, needing to exercise their profession to better themselves and their family," he said.
With Bonelli’s resignation now brings the number judges who‘ve resigned under the same circumstances to four.
