Port-au-Prince.– United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon is urging the international community to increase its aid to Haiti, he said in a message released Friday.

Ban, who released the statement ahead of the fourth anniversary of the earthquake, said that progress had been made in areas like health and education, but more needs to be done.

According to the UN Secretary General, Haiti remains extremely vulnerable on many fronts; 145,000 people continue to live in make-shift camps. "The country is structurally exposed to recurrent food crises. Haiti has the lowest level of water and sanitation coverage in the Americas."

If they're just going to send money over don't even bother, the politicians, aka magicians, will make it disappear.

@bh,

Don't be shocked brother , Roy Stone is not being sarcastic. This comment was stated on national tv at the time of the breaking or realization of the AIDS epidemic back in the 80's. It was truly a disheartening thing to hear, especially being from the same island.

Back to this article , one of the quickest fixes for Haiti is for the international community to take in about 3 million haitian immigrants (legally) to give the country breathing room to rebuild its infrastructure and economy. With these many countrymen and women spread worldwide the money sent home diligently by this diaspora would be in the billions.

Haitians would be providing their own aid.

Many of these accepted immigrants could come from the many illegals still coming to DR , thus also allowing the DR and its people some breathing room also in supporting its own population that at present is fleeing DR to other countries for lack of opportunities.

So the population explosion in Haiti would stop with only 7 million remaining, venganzaderafael ?

@venganzaderafael, if you really want Haiti to get a breathing space Haiti should claim french territories in the Caribbean and south america ( french Guyana it is slightly bigger than Hispaniola,Saint martin,Martinique , and others as reparation) since France decline, Haiti must of bought something for twenty billion dollars and forgot to pick it up, Haiti should enact heavy child laws like china. pertaining to HIV it was those sex tourist that introduce it to Haiti from either Europe or U.S., there are opportunity in DR it not what some Dominican wants, just like in the state some jobs americans will not do and the migrant worker who is trying to survive will do.

Maybe sex-tourism brought HIV to Haiti, bhaitian, and perhaps the UN introduced Cholera. However its Haitians behavior that blew both out into epidemic proportions it seems.

@RoyStone, during the time HIV was introduce into Haiti via sex tourism it was relatively new disease no one knew about and so with out knowing about many where helpless to prevent it , the social ,economic and political arena was not ready to handle it and so it spread, but today the HIV cases have steadily drop compare to many of Haiti neighbors that has increase. cholera was cause by the UN not taking proper steps to detect such bacteria and not disposing of there sewer in a proper manor, in which a country that had been isolated from such virus has no manor to deal with it nor can they comprehend it, just like Christopher Columbus to the native Amerindian. no country has magic cure for anything RoyStone

Good for you.............and you are doing exactly what you are suppose to do and I congratulate you for that. However, your are the exception and not the rule. @guillermone, you really don't know Haitians do you, the Haitians that you witness being cheat usually has to make major sacrifices just so they can take care of there family like how my aunt worked hard to take care of the family, right after the earthquake the remittance of the money send back to Haiti was estimated at two billions dollars, guillermone you and many others in this forum keep forgetting the uneven trade balance between Haiti U.S. ,DR and others which destroy local productions and has to import most of basic items , which know matter how much Haitian send from abroad it will never help Haiti because it leaves the country as soon as it gets there, if you want more detail please ask for more.We contribute so much that Jean-Bertrand Aristide called us the tenth department before nibes was created.

Yes that is true, but don't blame the DR. The US is the biggest culprit for Haiti's present situation.
It was a combination of foreign aide and the United States flooding the Haitian market with underpriced goods. Unable to compete, it helped put the native producers out of business by forcing them to sell their food crops at prices that barely cover production costs — if it sells at all. The DR simply followed the trend with the intent to satisfy market demands, but it was not the result of commercial trade with Haiti and neither the initiator nor the principal in Haiti's economic demise.

rokete,

Contraceptive pills, injections, condoms and IUDs are available free in the Dominican Republic yet so many Dominican girls don't use them, resulting in one of the highest unplanned pregnancy rates in the western hemisphere.

Why should Haitian girls be any better?

I always say the same thing over and over again, but nobody wants to hear it. Teen-age pregnancy is not the result of a lack of knowledge, education, money and access to contraceptives. It is nothing but a result of lower moral sexual standards. In the fifties it was a big deal when a girl became pregnant out of wedlock. She had to practically remain in hiding for 9 months and only after the birth was she able to show her face back in public. Today its no longer stigmatized with little to no consequences. Instead an underage and unmarried pregnant girl is almost celebrated. Either extremes has it drawbacks but what schools and parents fail to inculcate is responsibility, self-respect, self-restraint, self-control and self-discipline.

but when Haiti ban chicken ,chicken products and plastic product. one the ban on chicken and chicken product was done for two reason , one was to highlight trade equality between HT and DR and bring more to cooperation . second the ban on plastic product was much more an environmental for Haiti do not have any means to recycle , both bans cause a outcry which does not understand the reality that Haiti face.
