Santo Domingo.- More than two dozen former soldiers and former fighters of the 1965 Revolution went on a hunger strike Friday to demand that president Danilo Medina keep his promise to pay 126 of their comrades a RD$8,000 (US$185.50) monthly pension.

The veterans, some of them with IVs, hauled mattresses and blankets into the Ex-military and Ex-combatants Foundation located in the Luperon sector, and warn they will continue the strike until the President keeps his promise.

Group spokesman Moises Ramirez (Bigote) said they also demand an increase of the pension from 8,000 to 25,000 pesos per month, since in his view the cost of living, taxes, and inflation "swallowed" the pension they’ve started to receive just five years.

"Only you Mr President can lift the hunger strike when you fulfill the agreed points," said Ramírez, quoted by elcaribe.com.do.

The veterans also demand fulfilment of other unkempt promises made to the their Foundation in 2009 by then- National Lottery administrator Enrique Martínez, which have also been ignored by current director Jose Francisco Peña.

You know and no matter what, I sympathize with them and how unfortunate they have to take such extremes to get what they earned and rightfully entitled to have, but this is what you call the perfect example of what's the use. Can you believe they only qualify for barely a US$185.50 pension?

Well I guess something is better then nothing, but even if they do get the money, they are going to starve anyway. But I can understand, it is better to starve with some money then to starve with no money at all.

This is an abuse of those who have done service to the country. It is more profoundly abusing under the light of the previous DT story of "Official watchdog slams Electoral Court’s high salaries, perks"

All these veterans wish is a level of pension income that will enable them to live comfortably with the basics.

This only spotlights the imbalance and disordered perception of worth of those who serve and have served the government.

Shame on you DR.

These guys risked their lives during a real INVASION in circumstances that REALLY threatened the Sovereignty of the Nation after the overthrow of a popularly democratically elected government in defense of constitutional order. Not only should they be HONORED with Honorable pensions for their service to the republic but a statue of each one them should also be commissioned.

.........now the practical everyday reality is......if we treat these HEROS this way, what loyalty and performane can we expect from our current soldiers in defending the countries borders from human trafficking, drug trafficking and other illegal sovereignty threatening activities, when they see those that came before them and made historical heroic sacrifices.......treated like SHIT!

Point well taken

It is no wonder why some will succumb to the gains offered by others for them to not to honor their oaths of allegiance. The government by its acts of passive behavior towards unrecognized swarms in its employ contributes to the retreat of ethics.
