Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.- President Danilo Medina affirmed Friday that poverty fell 6% in the past 18 months, with 528,061 people advancing to the lower-middle class and 224,000 from indigence to poverty.

Speaking before business leaders prior to opening the Central American Integration System (SICA) Summit, Medina said the Dominican Republic expands its middle class as its economy grows at a 5% average. "We’re working to pull thousands and thousands of people out of poverty and we’re doing it the most sustainable way it can be done: by creating jobs"

He said 200,700 jobs have been created between October 2012 and March 2014, most of them formal and in the private sector. "By continuing down this path we’re fully confident that together, business and Government will achieve our goal of creating 400,000 jobs during this term in office."

..... and six months from now there will be a request to International Monetary Fund soliciting assistance to the government. The government will be wanting prop up small and medium size businesses because falling profits are forcing them to go out of business or cut back on staffing or reduce working hours which will bring some affected families into poverty levels. Working from two sets of books ?

The government sings the tune suited to the audience it is addressing.

I don't know what some posters over here are writing about that no jobs has been created and when in reality it has been. My brother, my cousins and almost 95% of my friends are all working and making money. I seen many new businesses opening up in this country in the past 18 months. Go to the Colonial City and will find that more than 40 business has been opened in the past 18 months. There bars and restaurant almost in every corner there and the Vicini family just opened up 5 high end boutique hotels which each one creates more than 15 permanent jobs.. Puerto Plata this year received 600K plus cruise tourists which is a 35% increased and more and more boutique hotels are opening up. Punta Cana and Juan Dolio are keep on growing and that means more new jobs. The movie studios in Juan Dolio are already employing many young Dominican with high paying jobs because anyone that is paying more than 900.00USD per month rent in a one bedroom condo is making a good living in this country.

laman00; DT is reporting what Medina said in his address. That's the way it usually works out in the real world. Why do you think these numbers were made up by the online paper?
