Santo Domingo.– An arrest warrant was issued Friday for
New York Mets pitcher Ambiorix Burgos on charges stemming from a hit-and-run
accident that killed two women.
Burgos is accused of abandoning the victims and fleeing, charges that can
carry six months to two years in prison, prosecutor Raul Quiroz told the press.
The SUV registered to the reliever struck pedestrians Josefina Minaya
Martinez, 38, and Angely Fana, 29, on Tuesday in the town of Nagua, north of the
Dominican capital, according to police. The victims later died at a
hospital.
Police said witnesses told them Burgos was the driver, even though his cousin
Edwin Silvestre Sanchez claimed to be behind the wheel.

It was an accident, there are hit and runs everyday everywhere. This just happened to be by someone famous here. I don't know many times a day a pedestrian jumps out in front of me.
Very sad for the families of the victims and for the young athlete. Who I am sure paniced and saw his own life and career flash in front of him. A bad decision to run and lie but that's why the sentances are normally light all over the world for manslaughter.

no one is elite without a proper education - dominican baseball players may have money, but more than half of them can't Read nor Write

OK, I stand corrected, sorry. I guess >50% of the high ranking military/police official and many of the Politico, are not "ELITE" either, as most cannot read nor write beyond a 7th grade (international not Dominican) level .

This was NO ACCIDENT. We've heard from people in Nagua that he was after one of the ladies who did not want to be around him and took off on the pasola. He tried to persuade her and then ramed into them. What a shame, what a Coward. Money does not make you any smarter, classier or likeable. El mono aunque se vista de seda, mono se queda!!

That's real justice...a 6 month to 2 years in jail for running over two people, killing them both and fleeing.
If so and I were one of the girl's father, I'd go run him over and then turn myself in. That's probably only 2 months in jail in the DR.

Juango, I agree with you wholehearteadly on all that Bravado and Machismo stuff. In one particular occasion that I happened to be out for a drink in Francifol in Santiago, I was alarmed at how some of these peloteros behaved (Furcal was one of them). I mean having a few dollars in your pocket is one thing -- but acting as if it was the end all of end alls was alarming to me. Someone's got to devise some sort of charm and humility training for these guys because more often than not they end up hurting themselves -- and worst hurting others as is the case here -- because as we all know instant wealth does not instantly take away ignorance. No hay nada peor que una persona ignorante con cuarto. Y me refiero a una persona ignorante no ha un pobre -- porque hay muchos pobres de bajo recursos que tienen mas clase que cualquier otro.

2.5 years, the charges against him in the US probably will put him away for the same time, maybe longer...
I do not know that much about Dominican law, but in many countries a prosecutor can file for homicide charges if he feels that willful intent can be proven, ie. he intentionally wanted to run the girls over.
But then again, if in the US a famous sportsperson sometimes can get away with murder I doubt how far the prosecutor is willing to push it.
ps. rumor has it that this same guy also has some firearms charges against him here in the DR...

What an animal. I see these baseball players all the time acting like fools. I don't think I can name one of them with class. Again, money cannot by you class being educated does. The worst of them has to be Raul Mondesi, I have seen him pull many stunts (and he is a politician go figure).
